Stop Loitering in the Hospital!
« on: January 23, 2023, 03:45:53 am »

Hospitals are set up from Meeting Zones.
But Dwarves LOVE to hang out in meeting zones!
How do I encourage my dwarves not to loiter in the hospital without disabling my hospital entirely?

Build a tavern. Never had anyone loiter in my Hospital (built from a meeting room).

Or set them up from dormitories. You can assign locations to any zone. (tbh this whole concept looks weird)

Ah, now I had someone make a beeline for the hospital and sleep in it when I did that. So not ideal.
Would rather pets milling about than someone using up a bed just when a barroom brawl breaks out.

I use dormitories. If your dwarves use them for sleeping, just give them their own rooms. They don't have to be fancy, a bed with a 1-tile bedroom zone will do fine.

When I made it a Dormitory, the icon for the zone didn't change to the Hospital icon like it does for the Meeting area, and that made me sad and thought that I was doing it wrong.

Are Dormitory-based hospitals still fully functional?  Does the type of zone matter at all?

Haven't noticed this issue in v50. Might just be because my dwarves spend most of their time in guild zones. However, I've also seen them in the well meeting zone next to the hospital. Do you have a meeting zone other than the hospital?

I also might have turned my hospital zone off and on again (i.e., suspend/unsuspend) since creating it, so maybe the basic tech advice applies to clearing the meeting zone data.

Mine works fine.

Probably not. You can even set a pit/pond to be a hospital, although there are probably several reasons why you shouldn't. You can use clay/sand gathering area on floor with no clay or sand, too.

I nearly always set up Hospital from a Water Source (since I like to have a water source in the hospital). This works fine and keeps the riffraff out.

In fact I never use a Meeting Zone for setting up special rooms, if I have to I just use a random zone like pen/pasture or sand.

This allows the strategic use of Meeting Zones to collect all the animals: because if you have entertainment for intelligent creatures like a tavern then all the intelligent creatures will go there and get entertained (except perhaps children) even without a meeting zone. Or if you have no meeting zone, all the animals (excluding those following a dwarf) should go hang out on the surface which is pretty handy for grazers and to act as a distraction for invaders which never requires a dwarf to lead an animal there.
