How to fight arrows.
« on: September 16, 2007, 03:30:00 am »

I don't know if this will be any help to anyone (maybe someone new who keeps getting shot up?), but thread is for any info concerning fighting enemies that shoot at you.

Unless you are inside a cave or otherwise hallway-oriented area, the best way to go in my opinion is this;
1. Right after you see him, duck behind a tree or pillar so that he is out of your sight. You can either wait there until he gets close and try to take him out, or if he isn't coming near (maybe he's busy picking off your buddies...  :( ) proceed to step 2.

2.If he is preoccupied with your buddies, you might want to just make a mad dash straight toward him (if you are carrying anything heavy that slows you down, drop it before you try to run towards him so he'll have less time during which he can decide he wants to shoot at you and not your buddies). If you are alone, then you want to find another object to hide behind that is closer to him. If there is one, dash for it, trying to move perpendicular to the line between you and him. I don't know if this actually decreases your chances of being hit (maybe I've just been lucky once or twice), but it does in a way because it means you will be shielded by cover soon. Once sight of him is blocked by this new obstacle, move toward your cover and thus your opponent, being sure to keep him out of your vision (and thus you out of his).

3.Once you reach your cover object, rush out and enter combat with him, be it physical or ranged.

Note that sneaking could be used during this, I just haven't tried sneaking around yet, so I don't know much about it.

Anything else to know about ranged attackers? Sorry if this thread seems a bit useless or unneeded, but I felt like sharing.  ;)

I think that having a good shield is recommendable too...

I just like to bat the arrows out of the air. I'm hardcore like that.

I keep a protective buffer zone of drunks to act as a projectile interception field (PIF).

I always sneak around everywhere, and once that is legendary, you can often get into the square right next to them without being seen.  Once you attack, however, they attack as well - the problem with bows at the moment is that one hit is all it takes to kill you, so if you can't take them down with one hit you're dead anyway.

For this reason I like to just throw things at ranged combatants.  If you are sneaking and throw something, you still don't get spotted, so you can take someone out with rocks from two spaces away without even being seen.  Unfortunately, due to a bug or coding error or something, the more "skilled" you get in throwing, the worse you get at it, so I like to save my throws for ranged opponents so that I don't get too much experience with it.  Once your throwing reaches "Legendary" you'll almost never hit, and do next to no damage when you do.  It's a real bummer.

The only reason I can see for an adventurer getting worse at throwing is if you lose an eye.

I thought there was meant to be a bug that made throwing get worse at very high levels?

damage keep going up but when i hit legendary accuracy seems to go down a lot

im 99% sure i didn't have any permanent injury's and the body parts list was still only one page long but my thrower would often miss as much as 90 degrees

Yea... Even with a shield arrows still get you... all the time. Hell the best way to combat ranged weaponry is to hide and throw crap at the ranged attacker.

It would be great if ranged attacks were fixed.

Best ways to handle arrows and bolts:

1. Sneak.  Sneak *everywhere*.  It saves a lot of hassle even against normal enemies, and as mentioned, you can throw things while sneaking and never get noticed.

2. Get a good shield and a lot of armor, and train armor/shield user skills up whenever possible/safe.  Talented Armor User as an initial first pick is really good for this, and four sets of iron chainmail plus seven hoods, an iron helm and an iron cap should do you well for head and upper body protection (presuming, of course, that you can get them... hoods are usually not easy to find in shops, though if you're willing to piss off human civs they can be easily garnered in towns).

3. Get as fast as possible.  If you start out encumbered by your armor, train your skills until you either aren't or are so fast it doesn't matter.  1000 should be the minimum; any slower and the archers will assuredly get more than one shot for every action you take.

4. Get wrestling skill.  It doesn't matter how fast they shoot if you jump out of the way.  It also doesn't matter how fast they shoot if you can sneak up to them, snatch the bow/xbow out of their hands [free a hand by dropping either your shield or weapon, get in melee range, get to the wrestle menu and pick "Grab (x's bow/crossbow) with (free hand)", then use shift-I and pick the red (IIRC) weapon] and slay their weaponless hides.  Even cutting off an arm isn't faster than this (people can shoot bows and x-bows one-handed).

5. Get really, really good with your primary weapon.  If you disable/hack off both arms, or they fall unconscious from the pain, they can't shoot at you.

Always drop your weapon, never drop your shield because the shield is about 12 times better at blocking arrows then armor... maybe 13 times.

Actually, I find that with enough armor it does at least as good a job at knocking away arrows as a shield.  But then I wear four suits of superior to exceptional iron armor, and seven hoods on top of an iron helm and an iron cap... >_>

You do also have to remember that bows are generaly very powerful and most are designed to kill in one shot.  I like the bows the way they are now because I think its more relistic than say Oblivion where I can have an arrow sticking out of someones eye and they run to go tell the gards.

Well, I think that's partly because Oblivion doesn't have any critical damage for mortal shots, like to the head, throat, or heart.

I still think it's overkill though, for every goblin bowman and his mother to be able to run an arrow through a fully armored legendary dwarf's heart with one single shot. I'm serious, I've had this happen like five times. They always pierce the damn heart.
