Setting up my Kitchens to use Stone Pots exclusively.
« on: January 17, 2023, 05:39:46 pm »

I've tried finding out a way to set up my stockpile links so that Prepared Food, as well as meat, fish, plants, ect., use pots for storage. However, despte almost working my setup seems like something is not quite working.

I have a Pot Storage set to take from anywhere. Then set up a small one tile stockpile that only takes only from there. Then I set up my to Kitchens to take from their personal stockpile of pots, and the stocks for food, meat and such.

I am not sure if I have have all the connections properly set up.

Anyone succesfully manage that? Would like to know how please. Especially what your stockpile settings are.

In the last version, I just linked a stockpile of exclusively clear glass large pots to the brewery, and green glass pots to the kitchens, and along with linked stockpiles for food inputs as well, that was enough to make it work.  If your kitchen has been building up finished products for a while, it might be that dwarves ate the contents of a different large pot in the cluttered kitchen, leaving the empty pot there, and then that now empty pot was closest, and technically already in the kitchen, so filled with the next prepared meal that was cooked.  If that's the case, you can just cook more meals and it will work itself out.

Kitchen jobs don't use pots. It's the food hauling job that uses the pot, and there's no way to restrict which kind of container the hauling job uses. The best way to do it probably is to put all the non stone pots away from both the kitchen and the meeting area.

These were both very helpful! I'll be trying them out! Is there a difference between linking a Stockpile to Give to a Workshop from having a Workshop linked to Take from said stockpile instead? They both in theory achieve the same thing.

I assume it still works the same, so make sure you heed the implications of caveman98's reply:

If the haulers put the meat from the butcher's in a barrel, your cook will drag that into his kitchen. Same with booze. He'll empty them to make his roast, and you end up with barrels sitting in the kitchen that are a whole lot closer than any nearby stockpile when the kitchen generates the "haul away prepared food" job.

About the only way to make sure it never happens (assuming it's important for some reason) is to sell off all your barrels to traders, or segregate your fort such that barrels are ONLY in the part of the fort where barrels have to be used, "process to barrel" or whatever it says for dwarven syrup.

Thinking back on it, I think it only worked for me because I was just using 2 types of glass pots and had no other containers.  With the clear glass going to the stills, the only option left for the kitchens was the green glass.

Reply back with what you find, please, but I don't think that's going to work they way you hope. I'm pretty sure if you set your kitchen to take, that only applies to the materials needed for cooking, and that does not include either a pot or a barrel. Same with give. I don't really know whether the kitchen generates a "get this stuff out of my kitchen" job or (more likely) the stockpile that looks around for anything to put in, and says, "Hey there's food in the kitchen" job. If the latter, being linked is irrelevant to the container. The stockpile will say, "Here's the container to put it in." Whether that is the closest to the stockpile, or to the kitchen, or to the dwarf taking the job when he takes the job, I have no idea. I've never really cared enough to make stuff in my stockpile match, even if it does affect vermin.

No difference, they achieve the same thing. Only one link can exist between two stockpiles and you can create it at either end.

I havn't had a chance to play all week, but this really gives me a better idea on what to expect.

Stockpile links work for alcool as the still needs the plants/fruit/mead AND the barrel (large pot), the kitchen does not need any barels, and will work without.
If you want to "insentify" them to use one type of barrel give to a stockpile without any barrel, next to one with the desired barels (maybe in a checkboard) then from there give to one which accepts barrels.
