Please head to the Core Thread before reading this post if you want to avoid spoilers.
Strategy Phase

With the expansion of Ore-gathering operations in the Pine Barrens, the following changes are made to the armory:

PC-46 "SPIE II Toad becomes (EXPENSIVE).
L-46 "Firefly SPOT" Liaison Aircraft becomes (EXPENSIVE).
F-42 "Daedalus" Fighter remains (CHEAP) because it has always been (CHEAP), I was just testing you.
B-43 "Barragan" Strategic Bomber becomes (EXPENSIVE).
"Gutenberg" Ruggedized Mimeograph and Typewriter becomes (CHEAP).

After-Action Report

They say money makes the world go around. That's certainly the case when it comes to UNSA intelligence operations. A few mortgage payments here, a new car there, and soon people find themselves more willing to lean toward capitalistic teachings. There is no greater proof of this than the very recent and dramatic upheaval in Harren University of the Sciences' curriculum. Professors find themselves pushed to promote UNSA's agenda, whether it be through focusing on studies of animals native to UNSA lands, researching historical developments made by scientists native to nations that are now UNSA member states, or any other number of subtle meant of promoting UNSA subconsciously among the students.

William may have been getting on the nerves of some of the beancounters having to account for the money he'd been practically giving away, but it was the best, safest, and most logical option available to him at this moment, and saved by a lack of oppositional efforts. He just hoped this wouldn't be pulled from his retirement fund.

Harren University of the Sciences has been successfully Purged.

----

After the recent issues at the North Point Observatory, it was clear to UNSA intelligence that a tighter hold on the facility be made. To this end, they went above the head researcher and to the investors themselves. Over the winter season, investors found themselves backing down to be replaced by UNSA puppets. This was, again, an effort carried largely by the power of the dollar.

A notable, and somewhat controversial addition to the board of investors, was the disgraced Hugo Andersson. Having been left stripped of his job and reputation, Andersson was an easy target for UNSA recruitment, and jumped at the opportunity to get a one-up on his naysayers. With Andersson in position, it was an easy task to realign the North Point Observatory to UNSA's cause.

The North Point Observatory has been Secured.

----

Aleks had proven to be a little bit of an issue lately. His decision to go along with UNSA's goals had begun to bring attention to incidents that SFS intelligence would much rather people forget about entirely. So one of their agents was sent to take care of the issue, although he was rather bored of babysitting the drunk.

The man pulled Aleks' head out of the toilet and let him gasp for air.

"No more bullshit," he spoke flatly.

"But I-" Aleks started before being cut off by dirty water filling his mouth as he was dunked into the toilet once more. Aleks was submerged for what seemed like forever before he was pulled back up for air.

"No more bullshit," he spoke again with the same exact tone as before.

"PLEAS-" Aleks found his words stifled again by toilet water. An agonizingly long time passed before he was pulled back up gasping for air.

"No more bullshit," the man repeated once more.

Aleks choked for a moment. Feeling the man tense up and prepare to dunk him once more, Aleks shouted, "NO MORE BULLSHIT! NO MORE BULLSHIT!"

"Good," the man said as he released Aleks, "Clean yourself up, don't want an infection," he said, pointing at the split eyebrow he'd given Aleks, "And remember: No bullshit, or next time it'll be a bullet to the head."

Loz and Sons has been Secured by the SFS.

----

At some point halfway through winter, Westlan began airing news segments that were either easily verified as false by anyone with some knowledge (mysterious mass poisonings from tainted water, exaggerated average wealth in SFS member states, pro-SFS demonstrations being held in various cities that never took place). It wasn't long before public faith in Westlan dropped precipitously, ripping WBC from UNSA's grip. Nothing had changed in the last season that would obviously impact the quality of broadcasts and reporting. Well, one of those Circus people was providing her voice for a radio show for a couple weeks, but that couldn't be related.

Westlan Broadcast Center was Purged.

----

The situation on Iava is constantly evolving. With the immediate end of foreign hostilities, UNSA-backed forces have taken the initiative and stated their intent to form a UNSA-friendly government on the island. They have control of the capital and it's port, as well as a civilian airfield. While they have the backing of a large number of the population, their position is still tenuous as UNSA supplies were delivered much slower than SFS arms, meaning they currently have more willing bodies than weapons to give them. SFS-aligned military forces maintain control of the military base, both SFS-manned GRADAR Stations, and the majority of the rural portion of Iava including the large eastern port.

During the Strategy Phase you will be deciding whether you continue supporting the pro-UNSA forces, stop sending support, or modify the current arrangement regarding The Iavan Dispute.

But the Iavan situation isn't the only one unfolding in the world.

As World Tension has risen past the first post, we are now entering the Midgame. Old world nations will slowly come forward with problems that need solving. Providing these solutions can give UNSA additional allies (and more importantly, additional resources). The SFS may try to work in opposition of our goals in the Old World, so caution is advised.

During the Strategy Phase you can take Two Actions in the Old World and One Action in Harren City. This means you can only Purge/Secure one location per turn. If you are already supporting an Old World nation and simply continue support as it is then it does not take up an action. For the purposes of familiarizing with the rules The Iavan Dispute counts as an Old World Action should you wish to modify or cease supporting them. Once issues are settled there is no need to use an action to stop providing support.

Two nations have reached out to Harren City using an abandoned network of radio relays set up by the massive invasion fleet as they sailed to the New World. They are, of all nations, Embral and Inithar, the peoples that led the aforementioned invasion fleet.

The Initharians are requesting aid in a heated civil conflict. The Initharian Archipelago was embroiled in bitter guerilla warfare after the military junta known as The Black Fellowship purged a large number of Initharian dissidents when there was a constitutional revision that dissolved a number of fellowships (somewhat akin to guilds taken to an extreme). The Black Fellowship has been putting down rebellions in a neverending island hopping campaign, not quite big enough to lock down rebel activity, but much larger than anything the rebels could muster for an open battle. Providing either side the means to achieve victory will grant 2 Refocyte - a Special Material, metal in it's base form, with the sphere of mechanical energy.

Embral is in the process of a purge of their own. A shadowy group known as the Sau-Cihare had been uncovered as schemers and plotters responsible for most of the ills that had befallen them throughout their entire history. Identification and removal of these puppeteers would go far to provide stability for Embral once more. The Sau-Cihare claim they are just an intelligence service recycling the name of a secret agency many millennia ago, and are now being used as scapegoats of circumstance. They have always served the nation, but cannot do so unless public opinion changes, violent actions are taken, or some other creative solution is offered. Providing either side the means to achieve victory will grant 2 Wellmaterials - a Special Material, metal in it's base form, with the sphere of sound.

It is now the Design Phase. You have two actions. Due to the amount of equipment we've dropped into the field for the SFS to peek at, a Secret Project Credit has been granted to maintain some future opsec.

You will also note that we have now shifted from four seasonal turns to two turns per year. This is largely to reflect the greater scale of global issues, and is also being done to help boost the rate that years pass so that tech doesn't sprint past a relative year you'd be familiar with (so we don't hit 80's tech with twenty turns in the 60's - it should make things easier to guesstimate difficulty for at a glance).

UNSA Model 194X "Camembert" Gravitic Needler
Given gravite managed to still be quite pricey, it was only natural cost-cutting would be attempted. Thus a mixture of just copper, steel, and caelium was created, and this time testing was done far more carefully, so when the Cuproferric Caelium turned out to be "all backblast, no propulsion" as one techie put it, only expensive lab equipment was damaged.
Naturally the first decision was to make a gun out of this new alloy. The Camembert pistol utilizes a set of spiraling CF-Caelium rails wrapped around around a rifled barrel. When the trigger is pulled power is supplied to the rails from a battery attached to the back of the pistol (easily removed by depressing a button, and slotted in just as easily) it creates a stream of twisting gravitional force, launching bullets out at remarkably high velocities. Speaking of the bullets, 4.7mm wide and 20mm long with a copper jacket and steel core, the unique needle rounds require a high twist rate to stabilize, aided by the twisting nature of the gravity stream. The Camembert sports an impressive fire rate, so naturally we chose a 40-round casket mag (roughly comparable in width to a double stack .45) that it empties in about two seconds; the battery will last ten mags before needing to be replaced. The recoilless nature of the weapon allows it to easily be kept on target, though controlled bursts are still a necessity to keep ammo consumption to reasonable levels. In UNSA service the Camembert is ultimately intended to be the standard sidearm, once production gets fully spooled up. Soldier's have good odds of hitting a target out to an impressive 60m, thanks to a combination of its high velocity, good ballistic coefficient, and a dash of firerate hit probability. Outside (undeniable) UNSA assets, we are well aware that the Camembert's relative concealability and rapid fire rate are well-suited to assassinations, ambushes, and drive-by shootings. We're sure it will find a place in the hearts (and pockets) of all sorts of ill-defined militants, so long as they pay lip service to UNSA.

BR804 "Albatross"
The Albatross is an attempt to combine the carrying capacity of a cargo ship with the speed of a cargo plane. The result is a large hydrofoil. This vessel has a lightweight grey hull, partly made of levisteel. As it gains speed, the hull is lifted above the waterline and reveals a winglike structure that supports it. As such it can glide over water, greatly reducing drag and allowing significantly higher speed than a normal ship of its size.
The benefits do come with a few downsides. It is unsafe to operate in gliding mode on sea during rough weather; it has extremely poor maneuverability; the wings are a weak point under enemy fire and they require a deep water port to land.
Its use is restricted to the military and it is armed with a single, lighter version of the guns mounted on a Herring destroyer.

(not a picture of the Albatross, just an example of a military hydrofoil for inspiration)

If we really want to start playing on the global stage, mechanically we need a "military" unit...

Quote from: Unit Design: 3rd Military Advisory and Intelligence Detachment "The Made Men"
Ask any good businessmen, you can have the best product in the world, but it won't sell if the market doesn't know about it.  It can truly be a challenge to get the "right" people using your product in the "right" way sometimes.

Foreign Military Sales is not immune to this business concern.  Foreigners don't always readily appreciate the features of Northern engineering, and sometimes cling to backwards domestically produced technologies, or worse, flirt with inferior Southern "goods."

While it is true that "what is good for business, is good for the UNSA," losing a given foreign market isn't the worst thing in the world.  (Plenty of fish in the sea, eh?)  What is "problematic" is when strategic allies don't know what we can offer for military aid or how to use it.

"The Made Men" of the 3rd Military Advisory and Intelligence Detachment are a clean cut group of subject matter expert (SME) staff officers who function much like elite business consultants.  Flown into an organization "under crisis," they scour the ledgers and conduct interview to identify the "inefficiencies" which ail the organization.  They then present reforms to organization leadership, typically dictating restructuring and implementation of more "cutting edge" measures.

And it turns out advising a foreign military isn't that different isn't that different from advising an ailing former blue chip corporation.  For example, both tend to suffer from an entrenched romantic attachment to what worked in the past, "You still have how many Hussar regiments?  I can't wait to tell you the kind of reconnaissance a Firefly squadron can execute on that kind of budget with a fraction of the manpower.  And if you still want some "shock & awe," an Awpee Platoon is cheaper than you'd think."  ...because as the old saying goes in Foreign Military Sales, "When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping."

Upon hardware delivery, the Made Men personally arrange and conduct briefings and training on the new UNSA hardware, ensuring they're properly integrated into the military for maximum effectiveness.  Surely, the people of the foreign nation will swell with a sense of pride & accomplishment as they witness their reformed military proudly showcasing cutting edge UNSA arms.

But when shit really hits the fan, you have to go to war with the arms you got, not the arms that'll be shipped in three months.  Luckily, the Made Men are competent staff officers who will readily advise on military strategy and operations.  Of unique benefit, the Made Men possess the clearance and authorization to release intelligence information from otherwise sensitive intelligence programs.  Of course, that often reduces down to "If I were you, I'd reinforce that outpost before 0300 HLT tomorrow."  Even when not directly employing information from the UNSA's various intelligence programs, the foreign military will soon learn that virtually anything the Made Men say could be secretly backed by these classified programs, and value their advice over those of other powers.

Alright, so my logic is that I want to escalate into Iava to push us into the wonders of the atomic age.  We need an explicit military unit for that, so there's one design.  I like the Camembert because we need a concealed carry, and doing it as a railgun sets us up to develop that tech for our long arms, machine guns, and eventually autocannons.  With the idea of breaking into railguns for further development, throwing a research credit at it is a good investment.

Would really like to add some form of transport as well, though. It's key for any midgame mission, where we should be able to establish a military presence overseas quickly. In the lategame it would still be a great help, logistics are very important in war.

Adding a more conventional military transport aircraft design.

Quote from: Condor tactical military transport aircraft
Your friends tell you what you want to know. Your enemies tell you what you need to know.

The SFS are ahead of us when it comes to logistics. Looking with envy at their Lizing Li-GG Longhaul Cargo Plane, UNSA military staff offers a filthy amount of money to the Northern Island company that can provide our army to do the same, but better. Part of the money being used to buy a few Lizing planes and providing them to interested companies.

The contract-winning design was the Condor. It is a transport aircraft based on borrowed technology, while incorporating the levisteel alloy into the airframe structure. Levisteel is primarily used in the wings and tail surfaces, allowing for reduced weight without compromising structural integrity. It is a large military cargo plane with a conventional high-wing configuration and a straight wing design to maximize lift and stability during takeoff and landing. It features a rear-loading ramp and door system to facilitate easy loading and unloading of troops and cargo.
It has limited self-defense capability, in the form of two manually operated machine guns mounted in defensive positions.
The aircraft's design focuses on simplicity and ease of maintenance to ensure operational viability. However, the manufacturing and supply chain for the levisteel parts might be limited, potentially impacting the availability of replacement parts and affecting the aircraft's operational readiness.

uses Reverse Engineering Credit, maybe an Expense Credit too

If that's too esoteric, some more ideas for military units...

Quote from: Unit Design: 1st Aviation Volunteer Group "The Flying Salamanders"
As any true maverick flyboy would tell you, never rules and regs get in the way of a good fight.  With that in mind, the 1st Aviation Volunteer Group was formed.

A mix of playboy adventurers and UNSA military personnel on paid leave, "The Flying Salamanders" form a self-contained expeditionary air wing that flies under the flag of their host nation.  Making use of convenient UNSA military aid, they focus on intense tactical missions such as air superiority and close air support.

An elite but egalitarian all volunteer organization, The Flying Salamanders are happy warriors known for high morale.

If you don't get the reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Tigers

Now if we really want to lean into mechs...

Quote from: Unit Design: "Ronin" Private Mechanized Company
To make the "Awpee" a reality, the UNSA had to make some unusual deals with the private sector.  To make a long story short, multi-millionaire industrialist tycoon Thurmond Wakefield was authorized as an end-user for both the Awpee and all related technology.

Now some multi-millionaires sponsor yacht teams.  Others equestria.  True nerds may even form a Formula One team.  A true eccentric, Mr. Wakefield went and formed a "freelance" Private Mechanized Company.  (Naturally, he fanatically hates communism and would do nothing to endanger his standing in the UNSA military industrial complex, so his definition of "freelance" is conveniently in lock step with our interests.)

The "Ronin" is a company sized Mechanized element.  It consists of one Mech platoon, one Infantry platoon, one Field Support/Sustainment platoon, and a HQ platoon.  Complicated machines with extensive logistical and operational "tail", all three PLTs exist to support the Mech platoon.  For example, the Infantry PLT exists primarily to provided trusted organic security for the Ronin's Forward Operating Base and rarely is out on manuever with the Mech PLT.

Avion Industries (C-47) Skylorry
After past failures, Avion has finally brought us some design specs that seems potentially useful.
Looking like the front half of a guitarfish, the Skylorry's levisteel skin is specially made to slide through the earth's gravitational field while minimizing its pull. You might notice that in spite of that there are four cone shaped holes in the fuselage. These are connected to the Skylorry's main engines, two Gravite rods; this results in gravity essentially being forced down them, with the twofold effect of making effectively every direction equivalent to horizontal in efficiency and boosting raw power in general. This means, even with an emphasis on extending its range and maximizing engine efficiency over raw power as much as possible, the Skylorry can reach a relatively impressive 350 km/h, and a few small gravite plates provide the skylorry with full vtol capabilities (thanks to its low gravitational profile), allowing it to land on its skids (or just hover about) wherever it pleases. Powering this setup is a hydrogen fuel cell, deemed the most efficient power source for this purpose. To keep crew comfort for the pilot and co-pilot within acceptable levels over long haul flights ration packs, a lavatory, and a bunk bed have been provided just behind the cockpit. The cargo compartment can carry about 2-3-tons of whatever or flip down seats for 20 passengers and a few stretchers down the aisle. You could probably guess from the name, but the Skylorry is a civilian aircraft. Oh sure, it'll still primarily serve UNSA as the C-47 Skylorry, but it's potential in civilian logistics is just as useful to us.

I mentioned a ground effect vehicle in discord, so I'll try a writeup.

That said, I think I may end up voting for the skylorry, since it seems a better way to evolve capacity for the helicarrier style vehicles I eventually would like to see.

Hyperion Superheavy cargo seaplane

The hyperion is no doubt the largest plane ever built, and capable of cargo capacity on par with a modest sized ship at far higher speeds.
It is, in fact, somewhat inspired by ships in designs, as it is a seaplane and intended to operate close to the sea during loaded flight. The main body or keel is large, bulky and mostly empty, consisting of a large cargo bay. A large payload door in the front allows for disembarking and embarking large cargo such as trucks, tanks or legged vehicles.
While most of the buoyancy in water is provided by the main body, in flying boat style, the Hyperion also has floats supporting the wings, to reduce the stress imposed by the great wingspan.
The wingspan, notably, isn't this large just to create lift in the straightforward way. Rather, to be able to fly while fully loaded, it employs what is called "ground effect", which greatly increases available lift when flying close to the ground or, as it happens, to the sea. The altitude at which the effect is felt is proportional to wingspan, therefore longer wings allow the Hyperion to operate high enough to fly on top of sea storms n anything barring the worst storms.
This is only one of the things that make such a large flying structure possible however: first of all levisteel is heavily incorporated in the structural elements of the plane, but also gravite plate spread on the underside of the plane to gain extra lift. The overall effect of those last 2 measures is such that, in an unloaded state, the plane can properly lift off and leave the ground effect area. To reflect this freedom, it is provided with retractable wheels to be able to operate on airfields - should a suitable one be found.
For propulsion, it uses conventional engines, with fuel stored in the wings.

I realise I'm being rather contrary here, but I have reasons. First, I agree we need a transport option, and I'm not interested in just making a clone of their plane. If we're going Reverse engineer it should be something interesting. Perhaps we can save these  tokens for when we get some battlefield salvage, if that's a thing.

Second, I want a unit that will still be valid in the end game, and I'm not convinced the Made Men will have that utility. Hence a straight combat unit and I'm a sucker for the Awpee.
