Do aquifers still absorb water?
« on: January 13, 2023, 08:02:10 pm »

I'm pretty sure this setup used to work at some point:

Both layers are light aquifers.

I believe only heavy aquifers absorb water.

That's unfortunate. Makes it much harder to change things or fix mistakes.

Is the layer below an aquifer?

No. Both these layers are light aquifers though.

I think you can only drain into a solid aquifer tile from above. I.e., that 1x2 area in the sand aquifer shouldn't be dug out so you'll have to move the pumps back by one. IDK if light aquifers drain or not.

I'm pretty sure I used the same setup from the double-slit method that I've used a long time ago.

According to the aquifer page, light aquifers indeed don't absorb water, though.

I believe aquifers absorb water at the same rate that they excrete it. So a light aquifer, which doesn't give off much water, won't absorb much water either if that's what you want it to do.

Aquifer tiles always absorbed infinite amounts of water, it never was linked to their water production rate.

So wiki is wrong about light aquifers? From when is your "have always" knowledge from? I assume you tested it after aquifers were rewritten.

Just seem to not be in line with what other people's light aquifer tests have shown.

(Wiki is wrong about tons of things, just saw Putnam fretting about having to rewrite a lot of it. So that wasn't an accusation....).

Light aquifers are a new addition to the game. Previously, aquifers absorbed all the water you could throw at them, otherwise double-slit method and the like would not work.

If light aquifers absorb at all, I have not waited long enough to find out. I do know I can leave pools like shown in the OP for months at a time without them getting shallower.

Re: OP, I think what I would do is pierce the light aquifer elsewhere and drain this into the caverns or off-screen, then put in proper walls to line the aquifer. Unless this is a massive embark, it's not all that many tiles to the edge. An edge drain is useful anyway.
