I tend to get ambushed and killed by wild creatures on my way to my first quest location. On the rare occasions that I do make it there, I tend to get swarmed and killed by the denizens.

There was this one time though that I managed not one, but two quests before I killed, and that was not because of me (only killed the stray zombie or two) but because of my four drunks, whose names will live forever in history as long as there are men to tell the tale of their courage and skill.

They'd charge at the enemy, fall over, get up, charge at the enemy, fall over, get up, charge at the enemy, get tangled up with them, fall over together with them, and then pummel them to death with their fists.

It worked beautifully until we came across this #¤%$#&%$ gobbo with a crossbow...

I was playing an adventurer the other day, and I was quite happy with him. He was very strong in all three attributes, and I had recruited a big band of mercenaries to bring down an hydra. And only a few mercs got killed in the process (the marksmen for the big part).

So, this was in a corner of the map and there was not too much quests to do, so I jump on the first I find: go kill a pikelord in some ruins. Hey, I just downed an hydra in that cave. No problems!

I get there, fight a bunch of undeads and get tired... Then I see my mercs who are fighting the pikelord, and I come to their rescue... Only to have the pikelord hit me as soon as I get in range, destroy one of my knee... I fall to the ground, give out from pain... And get killed by the same guy from one shot in the brain before I even got time to realize that I was in trouble.

I was... Annoyed.

To say the least.

My adventures are like Mickel's.  In fact, my last one was the first time I have successfully completed two quests.

I had just killed the Ettin.  I stare at the corpse of the Spearman who had volunteered to come on both quests to rid the world of evil.  He had merely managed to slightly wound the monster before getting smashed into pulp.

Disregarding how sadistic the man seemed to be, always twisting his spear - which might have even been stuck in the enemy on purpose - until I'd come along and mercifully strangle it to death, I decide to bring his corpse home and give it a proper burial.  Then this happens:

A cave crocodile and a mud man team up on me.  The mud man breaks and strangles me until I am in a good enough position for the crocodile to go in for the kill.  He even positions my head for a clear shot.

[edit for grammar]

This is from the first and last time I played in the adventurer mode (sorry it is so long but this comes straight from the game log file). I don't think this battle (or should I say buturing) is funny like the others mentioned here, but brutal enough. I have not played in that mode since.

You hack at The Maceman in the head with your bronze halberd!
It is badly gashed!
The Maceman's left eye has been slashed out!
The Maceman's right ear has been badly cut!
The Maceman's left ear has been badly cut!
The Maceman's nose has been badly cut!
The Maceman's throat has been slashed out!
The Maceman's brain has been cut!

I have to ask... how?  Not that I'm not thankful I can do this, but how?  Either that's one strange halberd or there's some kind of secret art to it I could sell to the military possibly for lots of money...   ;)

EDITx2: Oh god, this is even more cheesy...

quote:
You hack at The Child in the head with your bronze great axe!
It is mangled!
The Child's right eye has been slashed out!
The Child's left eye has been slashed out!
The Child's left ear has been badly cut!
The Child's throat has been slashed out!
The Child's neck has been cut!
The Child's brain has been mangled!
The Child is propelled away by the force of the blow!
The Child slams into an obstacle!
The Child gives into pain.

Playing dwarf mode my first encounter with chasm creatures was somewhat lackluster.  I don't have a log(since it was fortress mode) but it went something like this:
  • Ratman springs from ambush!
  • Ratman gets torn apart in seconds by 1 war dog and her twelve pups
  • Swordsdwarves in barracks take notice of the attack 6 spaces away
  • Bugged merchant representative's sworddracon,(a modded race, essentially slower, more durable humans with wings) starts crossing the bridge chasing the unresponsive broker
  • Another ratman ambushes the sworddracon  and gets blasted into a wall on the other side of the chasm for his stupidity almost the moment he arrives.(wow I love two-handed swords) Swordsdracon carries on as if nothing happened.
  • 2(might have been 3) more ratmen show up, also eaten by dogs before they can even move
  • Swordsdwarves show up.  Note that they were just 6 spaces away.
  • A lowly recriut in the swordsdwarf squad kills the last ratman to arrive in what seems like 1 hit.
  • End of raid, ratman limbs everywhere.

The way people seem so intent on magma flooding them I thought that was going to be a challenge, but nothing even seemed to be hurt, I couldn't even find an injured puppy.  And it's not like the dracon made a difference, he just killed one and continued on chasing after the noble. Maybe I won't rush to the magma to flood it after all. All I need is to forge a chain and stick one of my older female war dogs on it.
Kinda funny, I built that lookout barracks there thinking I was gonna be swamped by dozens of rather hard enemies, I almost feel like I wasted the time making the beds.

I have a few fun tales to tell of my adventurers...  :D

1...
a new adventurer, Vaiolis keynuts (that shud be enough for the story, but it continues), enters a ruin with those pyramid-like structures. Walks to the side of it, a skeleton pikemaster on the second level impales my head instantly. I can't even tell there are enemies above me, let alone if they feel like hitting me.

2...
This adventurer's story comes from his name and story, Vaiolis Deepmaster the Ace Forest of Sweat the Red Finger. That is his entire name, I can't remember the other language that was there (the other 'words' that stand for those things) He was one of my best characters yet, had masterwork iron left to right (uncheated) and plenty of good leather too. Died from freezing to death due to the glitch where glaciers melt. The problem? It's deathly cold outside, the glacier won't refreeze. If only I was allowed to go back into the water after getting out...

3...
Darkein Blazeage entered a goblin fortress, killed a large hanful of goblins and their bow users and sword users and such, then gets beaten unconscious by their children.

that's all I can recall for now, after I get a few more, if any, I'll post them. The first one is still my favorite death of all time, it came out of nowhere.

I love werewolves.  I wanted a fortress with werewolves in the wild so I generated a new world.

I found a haunted tundra and I jumped in without selecting skills for my dwarves.  There was a lone werewolf (success)! Just out of curiosity, I formed my seven dwarves into a squad and sent them at the werewolf.

I half expected them to prevail, haveing three severely mangled dwarves left, and half expected them to be wiped out.  To my surprise, they tackled him and took him out in seconds without suffering more than light grey wounds.

7 dwarves at once is about 28 dwarves one at a time.

Also, there is a huge random factor.

The issue isn't usually huge overwhelming invasions from the chasm (although those do happen if you toss a lot of stuff in there or something to get them mad), the issue is having someone pop out of the chasm at exactly the wrong time and killing a legendary dwarf with a critical hit before you can react.  It tends to happen eventually...  that's why people like to go for more all-encompassing solutions.

It'll probably be less of an issue if/when burrows are in, though, since then you'll be able to have important dwarves stick to one or two (safe) parts of the fortress, and only have unskilled laborors dragging things around in the dangerous parts.
