Pirate Adventures
« on: September 04, 2007, 03:12:00 pm »

I'm thinking of spending the rest of my time until the next release with an Adventure-mode game with a pirate theme.  (Yes, I've been watching too much Pirates of the Caribbean, but seriously, those movies are freaking awesome.)  Obviously I can't have my adventurer sailing around the world in a ship, but I can play with the pirate spirit - take what I want, when I want it, and cut down anyone who gets in my way.  I'd recruit my crew from whatever towns I passed through, with a minimum number of them being drunks.  The rules I've come up with so far are:

1. No quests.  You can fight whomever you wish, but no errand-running for mayors.
2. No paying for equipment.  You can, however, sell items for coins.
3. At least 2 of my crew members must be drunks, if available.
4. Burning things down is encouraged.
5. Start with Play Now, no starting equipment or skills.
6. Only cloth and leather armor may be worn.

The ultimate goal, if there's enough time, is to take over the entire world, one kingdom at a time, by killing off anyone who opposes you.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?  Also, I'd be thrilled if anyone wanted to join me in this venture and see what stories we each come up with.  For this reason, I have created a brand spanking new world and will share it with you here.

So is the code more like... guidelines, then?

Also, what custom creatures have you added to your game besides rabbit?

I'm sorry, I thought I successfully took out the rabbit when I created this world but I guess I must have missed something.  That is the only custom creature, located in creature_large_temperate.  They do make good fighting practice, though.  I don't know if it matters, but the code I used is:

code:
[CREATURE:RABBIT]
   [NAME:rabbit:rabbits:rabbit]
   [TILE:'r'][COLOR:7:0:1][REMAINS_COLOR:7:0:1]
   [FREQUENCY:100]
   [NATURAL][PET]
   [CLUSTER_NUMBER:4:10]
   [POPULATION_NUMBER:15:30]
   [PETVALUE:10]
   [SPEED:720][MEANDERER]
   [PREFSTRING:lucky feet]
   [PREFSTRING  :pom-pom tails]
   [BIOME_ALL]
   [ALL_ACTIVE][COMMON_DOMESTIC]
   [HOMEOTHERM:10067]
   [LAYERING:100][BENIGN][BLOODTYPE:R]
   [NATURAL][LARGE_ROAMING]

[BODY:QUADRUPED:TAIL:2EYES:2EARS:NOSE:LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:THROAT:NECK:SPINE:BRAIN:MOUTH]
   [BODYGLOSS:PAW]
   [SIZE:1]
   [MAXAGE:5:6]
   [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:MOUTH:bite:bites:1:3:GORE][ATTACKFLAG_CANLATCH]
   [CHILD:0.3][CHILDNAME:bunny:bunnies][LITTERSIZE:5:10]
   [FAT:1][COOKABLE_LIVE]
   [STANDARD_FLESH]

By the way, I encourage frequent backups and save scumming - the odds of being able to do this entirely without dying are too slim to bother with.  Especially if you do as I'm doing and start with Play Now, and have to work your way up from nothing without being able to make purchases from stores.

And I had just finished finding the other thread you'd posted that in, too!

Well then, time to swash some buckles! Arrr!

As far as taking creatures out, it'll leave a copy in data/objects even if you remove the raw, so be sure to clean out your data/objects folder as well before you generate the world once you remove something.  Not exactly self-explanatory, but that's the way it works right now.

edit: although if you added it to an existing file like creature_large_temperate rather than making a new file, it shouldn't leave a copy, since the file in data/objects is overwritten.

Ah, that explains it.  Thanks Toady, I'll file that away for future reference.

So as not to clutter up the thread, I have put my story in a Google doc.  Read chapter 1 here:

My character's first chapter: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcqqghnk_0nr2xbt
Note: Don't expect much from any of my writings.
With such a disturbingly land-based piratey name, I couldn't bring myself to change anything.

Werdnari, that name is absolutely perfect...  Did you lose your character then, to that awful -3 Monster?  I've been backing up my saves on a regular basis.  I've put too much work into this character to lose her to a stray bolt or -3 error.

Coincidentally, I'm having a blast with this.  I'd like to add one more rule to the list, if I may: no metal armor.  Leather and cloth only.  It just wouldn't be piratey to be clunking around in iron.  In fact, it'd be downright cowardly.  I'll add the rule to the first post.

Also, I have added one more paragraph and screen shot to my first chapter (linked to above).  The minotaur is dead!  Now, to see what comes in the month of Slate...

Character #2!: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcqqghnk_7dvmhm6

With a name like that, she just had to start out as a tavern girl! I'll try to make her more piratey after she gets her first taste of revenge.

I'm indeed afraid that my first character was lost to the -3 monster. It infected the two saves I had backed up and also flawed the game somehow, as all my characters afterwards would instantly die when I saved and reloaded. New unzip of DF = win. I'm also backing up /every/ save I make for this character.
