I have no idea how this happened, but here he is:

Should this even be possible?
Can he "Die"?
Should I just send him out alone to conquer the world?

He has no quarters, just a burial chamber.
I mean, even if this is some sort of bug, it's just awesome.

hahaha this is sick, definitely not an intended feature.

how does he fare in combat? does he follow orders? does he take damage or get injured?

Mmm legendary. Was he attached to the weapons he was holding.

Just a theory that somehow Toady managed to add this in as a new feature (according to some sources, last wills and testaments in wall engravings if you do it on their favorite day and month inside the tomb zone, whatever that means) to recycle the old intelligent undead ghosts.

I've no idea how he fares in combat, as I've only just noticed.
I can't trace how he died, but he follows orders, that's for sure. He's currently training away in the barracks, and he follows orders... fine.
In fact, while testing that he follows orders, I issued a standard "go to" command on a floor tile, and well, this happened:

He f*&%$ng FLIES!

Send him to go kill something inside a sealed room once you've spit the save off please to just demonstrate.

Okay, unfortunately, I don't have anything captured that I can wall off at the moment, but I do have several areas walled off, and it would appear that he won't path anywhere that isn't reachable by normal means.
He also won't fly up and stab the ravens I have circling my fortress :(

Yeah, there is a "bug" with creatures. Most creatures don't take flying or walking through walls into account when checking if a point is reachable, so it needs to be reachable by walking. However, if it is reachable, they will be happy to fly there. I'm pretty sure there are other things that they don't take into account, but I don't remember them all off the top of my head.

set up those cage traps to catch something.... anything... so you can release it in a locked 1-z room and see if he will fly through walls to go kill it.

People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I bet he won’t because locking the door will prevent him from pathing to it.

Really hoping somebody puts this in their signature.

Should I just send him out alone to conquer the world?

From what I know, sending him out on a raid can make him come back alive.

One way of getting ghost soldiers is to send intelligent undead on raids. Not sure how you got yours.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Ah, that's possibly it!
I did have a few "Ruined Ones" in the military.
Hmm, so it might be best to keep his squad as the "Home Guard", to make sure he stays a ghost.

Is it not possible that he is, indeed, not dead? You said you can't trace his death. Did he become an intelligent undead somehow, and it is only the 'udead' name 'ghostly?'

Well, the only other intelligent undead I have in my fortress are all "Ruined Ones".

It's all a bit of a moot point now, as I sent his squad to explore the ruins of a necromancer tower I raised, and while his squad came back, he is now permanently "traveling or otherwise occupied off-site".
Any ideas on how to call him back?
I had this happen to the first squad I made (the entire squad that time), and eventually had to disband it and start afresh with new dwarves.
I'd hate to lose my ghostly commander, so if anyone has any ideas on how to make him return, that'd be swell :)
I've tried cancelling his orders, assigning him new ones, setting him to train or "go to" back at home, but so far, he hasn't come back.

I believe squads or squadmembers getting stuck travelling forever is an open bug.  In the previous version 0.47, the general consensus was to save before sending a raid, and not save until they're back or reported captured/killed.

Edit:  Not the one I meant, but keep an eye out if his gear mysteriously appears. (Mantis 12034)
