STEAM: Weirdness with guests fighting during siege?
« on: December 25, 2022, 03:34:26 pm »

So I hadn't noticed this in my previous fortress I played to practice/learn the New Ways once the Steam version came out, but this time around I've had two sieges, and both times the sieges themselves didn't last long at all, but I ended up having some of the guests (or perhaps people who had petitioned to join my fortress, I'm not sure) start fighting with some of my dwarfs resulting in both civilian and guest death.

I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that on this fort I noticed the fact that you can click an "add civilians to burrow" thing that I've been using, to keep from having to go through and add each dwarf one by one. And then after I unsuspend the burrow to have the civilians run for cover, somehow it causes some fighting?

The guests I noticed aren't marked as hostile - they're just fighting to the death for some reason. And they don't seem to want to just flee the map either, like a hostile would if it's fleeing my military.

It's getting annoying, and I'll probably stop clicking the "add civilians to burrow" thing to see if that helps, but that has its own aggravations. Anyone else notice anything like this, or have any other workarounds/ideas just WHY this is happening?

I saw somebody post that enemies had infiltrated his fort before invading.

Like some of the visitors are actually sleeping agents that attack when the invasion happens.

IDK if it is true, but it would explain what you saw. You can check it in Legends.

In addition to possible infiltrators it seems to me like guests have some weird quasi-loyalty cascade bugs. E.g. I recently caught a sneak (flagging him as hostile) causing all the visitors that arrived with him to be sorta hostile (would only attack if they wandered into someone, only sometimes cancelled jobs but did aggro my military and other guests). This has happened to me about three times and on one occasion drew in a caravan guard (and killing him drew in the rest of the caravan). Since many of the guests did not have group affiliations in common I suspect that guests also react (and are treated by others) on the basis of secret affiliations and possibly on quasi-affiliations like travelling together (although maybe some of these large treasure hunter groups are actually gangs?).

More research is definitely needed.

Interesting, at least some of the stuff seemed to maybe be the "sorta hostile" thing you were describing - they'd cause some cancel spam and would cause fighting, but they mostly seemed to want to flee rather than fight people (but yet not actually leave the map), and like I said, they weren't marked hostile or something.

I had it happen a LOT that fort, but am about to start a new one due to a few issues with the old one so... we'll see if it happens again I guess.

It's probably part of the never ending chain of agents trying to steal your artifacts.
IDK about the steam version, but i doubt it was fixed.

Basicly, when an artifact is created in your fort, just about every Historical Figure who exists, "Claims it from afar" (seen in legends mode) and they send agents non-stop to get it.
It was so bad in my last fort, that 100% of all visitors were agents trying to steal one of the 3 artifacts i had.

Only time i ever had legit visitors was when i didn't have artifacts.
It causes loyalty cascades all the time, because of what you said. (In my case, werebeasts in the tavern)

They corrupt each other, and your dwarves while chilling in the tavern.  if some fight *any fight* starts nearby, they all turn on each other, and you'll have your dwarves defending them due to being corrupted and stuff.

It's really frustrating, and basically removes a mechanic from the game.

You remove visitors, or artifacts from your game. can't really have both atm.

I'd be interested if anyone has found a way around it.
