Steam : Dealing with Agents in my Fortress?
« on: December 25, 2022, 05:57:03 am »

According to Legends, I have just had a Schemer come into my fort (Spring, 251) and corrupt one of my Dwarfs so they have an agent in my Fort to steal and plot a coup. Is there anything I can do to "un-corrupt" my dude?

Sadly for Schemer there were no Artifacts to steal because the fort was too new but he has just come back again. Can I accuse him of anything to stop him turning up? I don't know what my options are to sort out my own Dwarf as well as put a stop to the Schemers.

I know Villains are a part of Dwarf Fortress but what can I do to resist their blandishments?

Here's "Mister FakeName". You can see why I was suspicious of him in the first place...

I couldn't find him in the Legends initially but got to him through his wife...

Now I need to know what to do to break this conspiracy. I am in a young fort and don't have any Jails or anything to do with Justice set up yet.

Probably nothing. This part of the game was postponed part of the way through to make way for a 3-year Strange Mood on graphics and UI. Once it's complete hopefully there will be more we can do (and more ways for them to mess us up in Fun ways).

Ah, alright then. I will take a look at the Justice system while I am in that Fort to learn how that works. The Sherrif is a pretty demanding early Noble!

I think you need a dungeon master to interrogate. Unfortunately, you can't assign one until you get a mayor at population 50, and migrant waves are smaller now.

Yes, but it DID produce a workable UI and get the game onto Steam where it can actually sell copies and update automatically.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

No, just a sheriff (unless that changed for 0.50.x), but it does require a crime. Dungeon master afaik doesn't do much right now, and I think its purpose is prolly more advanced counterintelligence that hasn't been implemented yet. From my 0.47.x experiments, it's really hard to get info out of undead (their crimes and alternate names easily, but not so much their masters) but that might also be because my sheriffs didn't have the skills necessary.

This scumbag felt nothing near your tastefully arranged fine container.  Perhaps he should be introduced to your tastefully arranged magma filled pit.

The only damage they seem to do is steal artifacts, although I have heard conflicting reports, they might do more now. At any rate whenever a suspicious guest arrives I have them interrogated on any crime that happens to be open. This can usually compel a confession and conviction, but at any rate seems to keep them busy until they leave. Those that confess seem to leave immediately though so I have yet to arrest one successfully, considering building a disposal chamber on the way in/out of the fort for such guests.

Agents (usually or always your own dwarves) can steal artifacts and (as far as I am aware) attempt assassinations.

The only crimes you will typically experience are thefts, but you cannot actually convict or interrogate anyone until the crime has been noticed. You must have a sheriff or capt. of the guard in order to interrogate and beat suspects.

You must have a chain or cage designated as a prison to imprison convicts (if they don't get their head exploded by a guard's punch).

Lastly, you must have a hammerer to execute the most egregious of criminals.

If you, for instance, have no prison, I believe that all crimes that require imprisonment will instead result in flat out execution by the hammerer (if you have one). It is crucial to have a prison so that any agents lucky enough to survive the initial beating by the sheriff, captain, or guard will be able to survive and continue on being productive.

Wise to note that most non-agent criminals (like members and bosses of organizations) will survive the beating. Vampires will almost ALWAYS survive their sentence, so if you have plenty of spare dwarves, you can try to allow some heavy handed murder - I mean justice.

I had a fort with a couple of years of notifications like: "Urist McBlabberMouth has revealed the location of *useless artifact* to a visitor.  Nothing was ever stolen but then i started getting notifications like: "visitor has been seen skulking around", there would also be a short statement from the visitor such as "nothing will stand between me and *useless artifact*".  Some of these got caught in cages and others bypassed them (i'm assuming they had visited the fort already), but they seemed to be set as hostile and would get attacked on sight.  What is happening here, I've never seen it before?  There was nothing at all in the justice screen, how are these people being flagged as criminals?
