Drawbridges requiring mechanical power
« on: December 22, 2022, 07:23:55 pm »

Drawbridges are one of the largest constructions you can build and they just flip and move on their own.

So the idea is that they should use mechanical power with powered axels on both sides where it flips up/retracts. (both star spots on the image)
And the speed it retracts flips is depending on the power available.
I think drawbridges would make a good addition to "powered constructions".

Maybe offset the power connections to the right (in your image) rather than North / South of the hinge so you can still raise the bridge to completely seal off a wall section.

Or, make a new construction: the impassable power transmission tile.  Basically a wall filled with mechanisms.

oooh, shiny. what a cool idea.

it would probably annoy a lot of players but I have also always wished bridges were more slightly more difficult to manage, and some kind of power connection would fit the bill nicely.

a "walled"+power transmission or floor tile/contruct; along with a "hand pump" that can ratchet the drawbridge shut without needing a windmill or a water wheel (perhaps slower)

Thumbs up from me, for a slightly mechanical change. The wall fixture should adjust the speed like a roller though, so that the drawbridge cranks slower when done manually without a delay waiting on the stored energy, but still has its extremely powerful catapult/atomsmash capabilities when motorized. Possibly made even more powerful than before.

Just a bunch of wall-gears interacting with each other in different speeds as if you were making a bell-clock timing mechanism or something.

One way to mostly avoid upsetting people with this would be to add some non-powered alternatives.
  • Slab of rock that slides down into place to block a passage. Has to be deconstructed or mined out.
  • Portcullis, powered or not, drops without power, could be lifted like a manual pump or via power.

Maybe they could alternatively be "horse-powered"?

So you'd have to chain work animals of sufficient power to them. Could be off course any sort of big animal doing it,

I would make the strength requirements to be Troll or stronger.
