Metalsmithing bug? Or feature?
« on: December 22, 2022, 05:09:52 pm »

I wasn't sure whether or not to report this on the tracker, so here goes.

I'm playing the Steam version, having a lot of fun but my DF knowledge is extremely out of date; I never really got around to updating from 40d. So it's taking me a while to get situated but in my second Autumn on this fort I've finally set up a forge. I go into the Weapons & Ammunition menu planning to make some bolts or maybe some spears, but I paused when I noticed something very odd.

Most metals were not listed in the menu at all; in fact the only options were iron, copper, bronze, steel, bismuth bronze, and adamantine. Except, that's not quite true. There were a great many options listed that I had never heard of, and apparently are quite spoilerific according to a friend on Discord.

Is this normal? Again, I haven't played since 40d but I'm pretty sure it was possible to use a much greater variety of metals in the old days, and there certainly wasn't all this other stuff.

So, I'm only a bit less out of date compared to you, but from what I've seen.

Unfortunately I don't remember ammunition types that were available back then.

It appears to be working as intended that bolts can only be deliberately made from "weapons grade" metals.  I'm not sure when this change was made, but it appears to have been in place for DF 2014 aka 0.47.

Vanilla still allows silver and platinum for weapons and ammo. If you're playing with Genesis, Deon removes [ITEMS_WEAPON][ITEMS_AMMO] from their raws and you'll have to add it back.

That's all I can think of. No other metals are supposed to show up in the weapons menu. Each submenu is only going to show the allowable materials for that class of item. The rest, as others have noted, are new spoilers.

Platinum isn't vanilla except in artifacts.

Oh, right you are -- I'm so used to seeing it there lol.

Makes the point stronger though, all that's missing from that list is silver.

Silver is listed in the list, OP just forgot about it. However, a list of items craftable with silver is shorter than with for example iron or copper, notably the crossbow and the pick cannot be made out of it.

Ah, yeah, didn't notice that Sirus had scrolled down to capture the full set of divines. Everything normal then.

Is that 'material' tab even for bolts? Since it lacks bone and wood (you can craft bone and wooden bolts in vanilla Steam), I figured it was for the material the crossbow is made from, not the bolts.
Also, I am about as rusty as Sirius. I did play some 0.47, but most of my knowledge is 40d (and earlier)

EDIT: oh wait I misread the OP. You're talking about the metalsmithing options, I was referring to the materials in the uniform tab
