Help me with Finding Holes in my Roof (Acuifer)!
« on: December 21, 2022, 03:40:59 am »

Hi there!
I came back with the steam version - awesome for people who are too lazy for tilemods. Moust support is not too shabby too!
I have this issue:
I'm trying to establish a magma forge.
While I was digging out the space for it (and the channels for magma) I got flooded.
Most of that area is an aquifer. I've smoothened everything: walls, floor.
However it didn't change the situation - my magma channels are completely submerged, my forge hall is 1/2 or 2/2 (there's an opening which bleeds water into some undersea reservoir), it's also submerged my barracks below, but that's beyond the point.
I've figured out that since I've smoothened everything it'd be dripping from the ceiling: I'm slowly excavating upper level (through aquifer), but so far nothing.
Any suggestions?

If you can't work it out, channel a large area on the layer after the aquifer ends. Then cover it in floor grates, that way the water drops through, and dwarves get good thoughts for wandering around there. Shouldn't ever fill up if its big enough and you're only dealing with a light aquifer.

Well, on my map it seems that aquifer touches magma...
So, this is my magma shopfloor

And this is the tunnel above, I was trying to use to staunch water.

At the moment there's basically nothing i can do - water is slowly rising and it seems that my magma forge is set back for a significant period.

afaik aquifers do not drip from ceiling tiles, since the tiles that produce the liquid are blocked by the intervening floor tile.

perhaps you missed a spot for smoothing, or even a whole section of aquifer. this new version upped the aquifer frequency and now there are multiple layers on most embarks.

At the moment my plan is to try to mine out all acquifer when I get a bit more miners - it's just the area the size of magma forge ~5 levels upward.

Well, a really great deal of my map is occupied by aquifer or some sort of underground water/magma reservoir.

My plan's still the same - dig everything above my magma area!
Otherwise all the drowned dwarves suffocated in vain!

Yes they do. The hypothetical floor/ceiling is part of the aquifer unless (or even if?) the aquifer wall tile is dug out.

Yeah, it aligns with what I'm seeing - I'll try to mine everything out as soon as a get a breather.
But it seems to me like an uphill battle - I only got iron armour and probably cannot make enough steel without a magma smelter...

What happens if I build a wall under a leaking aquifer and then remove it - will if fix it?

No. Walls only create a floor on the tile above if it's empty space.

Well, the current arc of Endtour, a proud dwarf fort ended in fire miasma and a bunch of dead swallowpeople and forgotten beasts.
You'll not be forgotten!
At least I don't have to deal with that nasty aquifer any more.
I actually started a sizable project on draining the flooded caverns

It actually had a significant progress as the the upper levels were submerged as well.
