Yeah, let's trade security on a forum with a giant target painted on it due to the game's success so the forum works on a 14 year old phone.

It's worth noting that the main Bay12 site (and the old mantis) support both HTTP and HTTPS:

so there is a way to cater to devices that can't use HTTPS for some reason while still providing a secure version for those who can use it.

Frankly, I don't think supporting HTTP is worth it if it requires any significant extra effort. Most HTTPS issues on old devices these days are due to root certificates expiring, not due to a complete lack of HTTPS support, and those issues can usually be worked around with some sort of system/browser update, manual or otherwise.

Hopefully if toady decides to update it it'll stay the same while also going better than another forum I'm on, because they updated that thing with a focus on phones and it lags like mad on my computer now.

Adding HTTPS support really shouldn't even require changing anything about the forum software though.  That's the part I don't understand.  This should just be a matter of getting an SSL certificate and configuring the web server to use it.  Everything it serves should be transparent to that process.

Maybe Simple Machines is terrible in some way I don't know, but it looks like the copyright year is 2016 so it would be pretty inconceivable if the forum software were that recent and still somehow incompatible with HTTPS.
