Is there any significance to the various colors for the Dwarves in my roster? It seems like there should be but I can't figure it out or find the answer.

Thanks

I'm a bit vague on this since it's been a while since I last played the non-steam version, IIRC if you open the hauling route dialog and highlight a minecart stop it will show you where the stop is. But it seems there's no way to do this on the steam version? How does anyone keep track of where their routes and stops are?

I end up having to label them very clearly, which is hard with limited character space.  NSEW and other abbreviations are helpful.  For complex track runs, adding their order# can help, with letters/decimals if additional stops are added between old ones.

But even so, without any highlighting, the only way to get confirmation, is to build a lever linked to the stop in question, and look at the linked objects tab to compare track stop names with your hauling routes.

I see, rather a PITA but I guess until improvements are made we'll just have to use these workarounds.

Floors are a material a square and can be patterened however you like, but require more manual control over their construction (identifying the material and shape). Each square is a separate job. Floors can also bridge gaps or cover holes.

Roads require less material but can only be in rectangular shapes and are built as one long job. Roads cannot bridge gaps or cover holes.

In some scenarios roads might be better (like...for roads) but often floors are faster to complete and allow you to add patterns and such to your fort. Neither are really necessary, as there's no speed difference between rough, smooth, or floored floors.

For long straight distances, I use floors (like tunnels that are meant for trade caravans to use. Inside a fort, it's exclusively floors or smoothed stone.

Roads can catch fire. They used to block the view of item and unit sprites, though Steam version might have fixed that. Pretty sure they still prevent building placement.

Is there  way to change the font that the Steam version uses when you set graphics to classic ASCII?

I've found a partial solution - edit data/init/init_default.txt and change the FONT to the font that you want to use.

It's only a partial solution, because although it does make the game use the characters of the font that you choose, it doesn't make it use that font's character size as the size of a cell - the map cells retain the aspect ratio of the default font - and that affects text as well, making it almost unreadable.

But editing configuration files by hand is an old hacky way of doing things that the Steam version appears to be trying to avoid - is there a more complete way to change the font somewhere in the menus that I've missed?

I don't think so. IIRC, there was a DFHack discussion about hacking it in. Don't know if that got done.

At the moment this is my range's layout

Dorfs shoot right to left.
I'm thinking of building 3 other ranges on the left (shooting left to right) using 3 existing targets by overlapping archery range.
Has anyone tried it - will it work or i'm better off erecting 3 new targets?

Is there a way to remove the occupant from a tomb? If I remove the tomb and the game will crash.

Does the crash still happen if you save and reload the game before removing the tomb?

Are you trying to move the occupant to a different tomb? Maybe try building the new tomb first, designating it for the occupant, then remove the occupant designation on the old tomb. Wait for them to haul the occupant to the new site, and then you can maybe destroy/remove the old tomb?
