  • Does a roof provide protection from rain? From my own, not exactly scientific observation, I would say that the answer to that is no. Is this correct?
  • Are there other points in building a roof besides role-playing, decoration or building a tower? Such as protection from attacks from above of a Roc for example?

Rooves (really, floors) will protect from rain, falling/thrown objects and yes, from flying attackers.

Many invaders can also climb walls in a pinch, so covering up entrances is a good idea. Goblins will find a two z level wall with no roof to be a mild obstacle at best.

That surprises me a little bit now. My "not so scientific method" consisted of an extensive roof that completely enclosed a larger pasture. Inside that pen, there was still a walkway formed by walls to a well, and on top of that well was the entire roof structure. Strictly speaking, a static nightmare, which, when I began to dismantle the roof again from the outside (because I urgently needed the resources) developed into a real one. (I desperately needed a hospital at that point, and even more so now, after the whole thing broke apart.) Anyway, all the animals that had lived under that structure during the existence of the roof (maybe a few months) showed the typical signs of creatures that have been exposed to rain.

If you embark in a biome with blood or ooze rain, you can see it pool up on the ground.  In those cases, it is very clear that roofs protect against the rain.  What signs were your creatures exhibiting that made you suspect rain exposure?

No, no such exotic biome. Just the usual "was annoyed when caught in the rain"

update:
In the meantime I have found out that some animals can very well leave the pasture under certain circumstances. But all of them? Anyway, I'm still pretty new to this game and there's certainly a lot I don't know yet or maybe just overlooked.

If I turn stones into floor tiles - will give me more FPS.

Only very slightly, I would guess. BlindIRL suggests that as long as things aren't being checked by physics (i.e., near water), they're not significantly contributing to FPS death. Putnam specifically calls out dwarves checking sight as the biggest killer, so the solution will always be less dwarves (really, any actors) on the map.

Are you embarking as 2x2?

Normal 4x4. But I messed around a bunch down there, focusing on the big black unrevealed areas until eventually I started finding some interesting stuff so it seems to still exist only it looks different than I'm used to.

Candy should be guaranteed in any map bigger than 2x2 (it's in 2x2 squares on the grid, so if you're exceptionally unlucky, you can miss it, or if exceptionally lucky, hit 4 on one 2x2 map). The obsidian pillars are related to the new end-game when the monarch moves in. Personally, I haven't done this stuff yet, so I can't give advice on it.

I can't verify it as I don't have an older version easily avalible right now but previously in classic I think it usually praised the candy whenever I ran reveal and it was easily identifiable the structures that were to be mined but it looks kinda different so all you got to do is mine around and once you start finding some of the rare gems you are almost there.

You can flip over to the ascii graphics at any time, which might make it stand out, as well.

I'm trying to deal with "acquire something" issue again.
Can you remind me what exactly should my stockpiles be so that dwarves are not hauling stuff they do not want?
