got a relatively simple one i just haven't been able to figure out. that means it will turn out to be something obvious, of course, but i'm hoping someone here will help.

the pre-steam version, i'd bring up the mason's show, tell it to make a rock mechanism, then hit `d` on the job and select the rock type to use.  but in the steam version i don't see the option to even make a rock mechanism (of any kind).  so, how is it done now? all the tutorials/guides for the new version seem to assume you know how make a rock mechanism, so that leave that part out (grumble grumble). i can add one to the work orders, but it isn't getting made. :(

edit: i'm making a mechanic's workshop. hopefully that does it.

edit 2: yep, as soon as the mechanics workshop was made, it started building mechanisms. unfornately, i forgot to limit it the four i wanted, so it had completed 10 by time i noticed.
In case you still want to make out of a certain stone, there is a magnifyinmg glass that you can click on to select the type of stone to use in the workshop menu, after you have selected make mechanism.  The managers work order menus also have this magnifying glass to select the material, as well as other options like making large armour.

I just about fell off my chair laughing when I read about the dwarven sock obsession. ;D That was in the Wiki, on which I am still very much dependent as a beginner. However, many articles still refer to the original version. Is that still a thing in the Steam version?

That being how dwarves would rush out to ongoing combat to claim stuff dropped by invaders?  There's a standing order setting for that now (under the labor tab somewhere now I think) that causes stuff dropped by invaders to be forbidden by default.  You have to manually unforbid it for dwarves to rush out and grab socks.

Not sure how long it's been that way, but I think it's been that way since at least .31.25, so many years now.

That said, the clothing of your own dorfs is not forbidden when they die. So if you have a local dorf drown unexpectedly, his pile of clothing is up for grabs, and I've occasionally had a series of villagers-down-the-well-style drowning suicides, as dorf after dorf jumps enthusiastically into an aquifer pit, then realises they can't swim....

Does anyone know if egg laying fort mode creatures still work in 0.50.x?  Both I and a friend have been trying it and despite waiting for up to a year with nest boxes we've never been able to get fertile eggs that hatch.  I know that you'll get some duds and there's no way to tell if they're fertile, but after a few cycles of this it feels like one of us should have had one that worked.

I know this worked in older versions.  I assume it still requires a married couple, but I know that there were some changes to fertility so that creatures had to socialize or touch to get pregnant, but I don't know if that applies to egg layers or if it would make it less likely to work.

Another beginner question, if I may. My fortress is now in its 3rd year and is getting dangerously out of hand. Biggest problem: it's flooded with babies and children (38 out of 85 total citizens!). I'm trying to limit the baby boom through the settings page now, but I wonder if there might also be a rational reason for this kind of excessive fertility. My current working theory is that I've left too many dwarfs unemployed for too long. Is that a possible reason or am I just making things up?

On that occasion, I would also like to know if it is normal or an extreme exception for a 3 year old child to successfully build an artefact after a strange mood and now be a legendary woodcrafter? Which will most probably amount to a tragic waste, as I hardly trust myself to keep this fortress up long enough for this child to finally become an adult.

There does seem to be an unusually high amount of children coming in migrant waves. I'm not sure if the child cap settings even work.

Children making artifacts is normal. Now that we have guilds, it's possible to get them a moodable skill in something useful like weaponsmithing, instead of random crafting, which might also get you a useful weapon at the very least.

Is it possible to get dwarfs to equip the fancy weapons and armor found while mining ("treasure of the gods")? Mine just seem to simply ignore instructions to equip them.

When I try to sell a caged giant to the knife-ears, he is released and stomps everyone, because dwarfs don't believe in slavery. Ok.

Why does the same happens when I try to sell magma crabs? All get released, and empty cage is carried away. Are they "guests" too? Says "Wild Animal (caged)" in the menu.

You can only trade tamed animals.  Anything wild or hostile just gets released, as you've been experiencing there.

Hm. That's somewhat counter-intuitive. I wonder why this isn't viewed as a bug.

Are they the correct size for dwarves? Are they conflicting with other armor assignments, for instance boots not being equipped while worn over clothing is enabled as the dwarves can't stack shoes (clothing) and boots (armor)?

Answering my own question, but yes, this does still work like in older versions of the game.  I was just getting unlucky before or not waiting long enough, but I was able to get 6 babies to hatch over the course of a game year.  It does seem to still only work for married couples.

I think that bug is featured in this (15 year old) comic:  http://www.threepanelsoul.com/comic/on-trade-goods

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
