Can cats work on projects?

One of my cats has a name, is not a stray and has already adopted a dwarf. He is 0 years old, which suggests he arrived with the recently arrived caravan. A line in his personality sheet states, he tends to be a bit wasteful when working on projects.

What does this mean? Is it possibly related to his dwarf's profession (Record Keeper) or are there other things that I can't think of right now. Like hunting for bugs or making a mess as a project in a cat's eyes?

This is a total beginner question, so please bear with me. I don't even know if this question is really a simple one. I could provide an image if allowed and requested.

It's just because animals get personality traits like dwarves, even though they don't actually do anything or matter for animals.  Toady stated once that it's definitely a bug, but it's funny and mostly harmless so he hasn't done anything with it.

In short, no, cats can't work on projects and it's just a meaningless random personality, as funny as it is.

How do overlapping zones work?  I had my captain of the guard beat a criminal then put her in the dungeon.  She was injured so I made the room a hospital as well.  It has a bed and a table.  She got diagnosed in the dungeon but needed surgery, so was taken to the hospital for that, then brought back to the dungeon where sutures and dressings were applied.  Is there any reason not to just make the dungeon and hospital overlap completely?  It would have the benefit of assigning all my doctors to a single zone, instead of splitting them between different hospital zones.  Is the only downside the possibility of having a full dungeon and injured dwarfs have nowhere to go for treatment?

Do merchants only bring items that are specifically requested (ie, none of the random stuff they used to bring)?

No, but they'll prioritize requested items, and weight is very limited until you become a barony and unlock wagons.

I learned this the hard way when my glacier settlement ordered a bunch of Wood and Coal, and the caravan brought that instead of food.

1) Is there a meaning to the capitalization of letters for material? In the same list I have, say, a "marble throne", and next is a "Marble throne", with a capital M

2) When I install a gem window, it sometimes shows simply as a bunch of polished gems sitting on the floor, with seemingly no frame. What is the reason to that? Wrong choice of stones? No frame available? Bug?

Thank you!

if it is capaitalised I think it has no quality. The items listed with lower case letter should have quality identifiers before and after the name, like -marble throne-, or +marble throne+

I can't answer the second question, sounds like a bug

No, you have to click on the trade depot and examine them that way.

New Dorf with a few questions, thanks in advance for any help.

* My Countess has a bad attitude and it says her unmet needs are items. I have some of those special item my dwarves make after throwing a fit that are really nice. But how do I give individual items to her?

* I thought about making her a gold crown and encrust it with gems, but it doesn't seem like I can make gold/silver/platinum jewelry. Is this the case, or am I missing something?

* Keas come into my fort and steal crap, can I create a safe or a vault that protects my most valuable stuff?

* I have a swarm of war dogs pastured at the entrance of my fort, how can keas and other thieves get into my fort?

* We were having a great time cutting down the forest to feed the fires of industry when the pointy eared wood rats told us to stop. I'm inclined to tell them to go piss up a rope, but those cowardly sylvan vermin will likely employ terrorism and ambush us from the trees. Our steel industry was going well and we can just about kit out our 10 dwarf squad. How tough are these freaks? How advanced of a squad do I need before we can stand up for our god given rights?

* I'm trying to get some magma going to replace the lost wood, but I've heard bad things happen if I dig too greedily and too deep. How far down do I have to go? I'm at -110, but I've encountered hot walls a couple places higher up. If I dig into these hot spots will I risk flooding my fort with  liquid death?

* Are genetics a thing in the game? I've been singling out my best males and making them studs and gelding the rest. Am I wasting my time? Or is it best practice to breed my best pairs?

* My computer isn't the newest so I'm limiting my fort to 40. We just had a baby. Are we going to have to care for this poop machine for 18 years before they are worth a damn?

Thx

Answering what I can:

* Keas come into my fort and steal crap, can I create a safe or a vault that protects my most valuable stuff?

Sure, in theory.  You can set up stockpiles deep inside of your fort that keas and other thieving creatures would have a hard time reaching without being spotted and run off.  Cage traps will catch a lot of things, and are probably one of the best things to try.  If a dwarf can reach it though, it's theoretically not completely safe.

That should help a lot to keep them out, but depending on the entrance layout and how many dogs you have there it's possible that they wandered far enough from the entrance that something could sneak by.  Have you tried chaining them there instead of pasturing them?

Usually you don't find that kind of Fun by accident (though it happens), so it's relatively safe to dig down if you're methodical about it.  The biggest thing when it comes to digging for magma is that it works like water and is pressurized, so you want to try to tap into it at the highest level possible, else it may surprise you with how it flows and floods upward.

Genetics are a thing.  I'm not sure how much it actually matters for size, stats and so on so I can't comment on the viability of using it for things like improving your food industries, but it is a thing you can do.  It also influences appearance for creatures, which mostly matters for intelligent creatures like dwarves.

Yes and no.  Once they're a year old and no longer a baby they'll do the new chores tasks, but that's mostly hauling and I think some farming tasks.  Unfortunately, they can't do regular tasks until they're adults though, which does happen at 18 years old now.

In the Nobles and Administrators tab (where you appoint your nobles), there is an icon next to each of your administrators,  it is a crown marked with a + sign. It is used to assign specific objects to your nobles.

got a relatively simple one i just haven't been able to figure out. that means it will turn out to be something obvious, of course, but i'm hoping someone here will help.

the pre-steam version, i'd bring up the mason's show, tell it to make a rock mechanism, then hit `d` on the job and select the rock type to use.  but in the steam version i don't see the option to even make a rock mechanism (of any kind).  so, how is it done now? all the tutorials/guides for the new version seem to assume you know how make a rock mechanism, so that leave that part out (grumble grumble). i can add one to the work orders, but it isn't getting made. :(

edit: i'm making a mechanic's workshop. hopefully that does it.

edit 2: yep, as soon as the mechanics workshop was made, it started building mechanisms. unfornately, i forgot to limit it the four i wanted, so it had completed 10 by time i noticed.
