Steam version wagon accessibility?
« on: December 12, 2022, 10:49:48 pm »

Checking here to see if anyone knows how the accessibility works in the steam version now. I have a five wide bridge with 5 ramps either side but wagons still can't seem to access the fort.

Do you get an actual notification like "wagons have bypassed your inaccessible site"? I remember Toady said in one of the interviews that in Steam version you don't get wagons until your site has a baron.

Yeah my site has a baron and I'm getting that message. I'm mostly checking that ramps and bridges are not the problem since depot accessibility is no longer visible

Whether things block wagons or not has been known to change across versions of the game. For example, in the 40d age, you could build traps on the wagon path, but since v0.31 traps block wagons.

And there's one more thing that often gets built on a wagon path that hasn't - yet - been known to block wagons: chains with dogs assigned to them. If you have any of those on your wagon path, it might be worth investigating whether the behaviour of these has been changed to block wagons in the new version.

Trade depots need a 3x3 clearance adjacent to them now, I think, since wagons appear to stop right outside the depot now.

I also had problems with brooks. Wagons drive across them fine once they're on-map, but they appear to think they're impassible to wagons when the game is choosing where to spawn the caravan (and whether to spawn wagons with it).

Saplings and young timbershrooms also block wagon access... a broad paved plaza in front of and along the entry ramp will help.

Oh, definitely. Run a 3-wide paved road all the way from the depot to the edge of the map at a minimum  :)

I don't think it matters as long as there's an unobstructed path to the depot.  If there's only 1 clear path to the depot, the wagons will spawn there and take it.  In 0.47, I chanelled some holes near the map edge leading to a tunnel at each of the cardinal edges, and depending on which drawbridge is open, got the caravans to spawn there.  Helpful for when there are lots of enemies on 1 part of the map and you still want to trade.

Could be completely wrong, but I was having this same issue and thought it was a bridge; Nope, it was the line of cage traps on one end of the bridge that was causing the wagons to pass by.

Yeah, traps block wagon access. To cage trap your wagon entrance you'll want to extend the cage traps in a line parallel to the entrance route, leaving a 3 wide gap. Then you bend the line of cage traps right or left, maintaining the 3 wide gap, and add more cage traps along the perimeter the invaders are likely to path over so the cage traps are 5 or more deep. Invaders will go straight through the bend in the path while wagons go through the 3 wide path. Pasturing some bait animals that will flee from invaders helps to steer them somewhat.

There's also a thing you can do with unusable ramps.
