I think this is a good idea. Maybe have caskets/coffins allow burial by default when placed, with toggle options for allowing/disallowing pets. We'd still have the option to use zones to create proper tombs, though.

Yeah, but you have to close them off in a door, which is more annoying.
Ah, yup, that's annoying.
Or intended. I mean, big room full of coffins is kind of creepy...

As opposed to an irl cemetery, a field full of graves?
Coffins buried in holes, away from the place where we walk, yes.
We're looking at gravestones, not coffins. (Well, I mean, maybe it works differently where you're from...). :)
DF has plenty of history of creepy stuff.
I vote for mass graves of many types.

I always assumed they were buried, hence 'use for burial'

If they were buried (between z levels?) dwarves wouldn't be able to keep dropping off the inhabitants body parts as they get cleared up.

Nobody mentioned here so here my experience about coffins.
I was abled to place a coffin outside w/o any floor over it (so not inside a room or in the underground).
This was possible because the coffin is directly under a big tree and the game sees it as a "roof".
Someone else noticed that? It's supposed to be right that or not?

I see mass tombs/graveyards mentioned a lot since steam came out.

Memorial halls made from slabs are probably the most communal type of graveyard since you can put down a unlimited number of slabs within and just pretend its all linked together to a family plot/community thing, but there's a simple fact that its inefficient when couples can't share the same tomb, so end up with completely different spaces, which gets awkward when dealing with particularly powerful nobles like monarchs and consorts who co-habit with their living spaces and dining rooms designed to suit both parties, suddenly being squirrelled into seperate tombs.

A alternative idea, is to allow memorial halls to toggle to graveyards and have the central slab update itself with a stone-carving job to count the additional names and deaths of dwarves interred in caskets within its zone.

Dwarves not being able to be buried in a mass graveyard and needing individual tombs separated by doors seems odd to me, and the alternative of individually designating a zone for every dead dwarf is a pain in the ass and silly, any improvement welcome.
