Steam Version: Stone use in crafting
« on: December 07, 2022, 04:23:55 pm »

I noticed while fiddling with the labours stuff yesterday, that there are two new stone-use skills that I am not 100% certain on what they do (as in, I and a few people I chatted with speculated, but have no real true idea)

So, non-steam version has
Masonry
Stone Crafting
Stone Detailing

the steam version has
Masonry
Stone Crafting
Stone Detailing
Stone CUTTING
Stone CARVING

HAs anyone actually figured out what those two new ones do?

I've gotten a bit tripped up by this too.

I've learned a bit by assigning workshop masters or creating custom Work Details and seeing which skill they list as relevant, presumably the skill matching that labor.

Here's my current best guess for the new version based on some tinkering around:

Masonry - now unused? My only dwarf with any points in that skill has it rusty now, despite doing a lot of stone-related work. EDIT: Someone else noted it may be for constructing stone buildings?
Stone Crafting - same as before, making stone crafts
Stone Detailing (I think is listed as Engraving in the UI?)- I think ONLY for engraving (not for smoothing)
Stone CUTTING - I think this one is ONLY for stone smoothing & fortifications (not for engraving)
Stone CARVING - I think this has "replaced" Masonry, seems to be the skill for using the stone workshop to make stone furniture, blocks, etc.

Yes, all the changes definitely are taking some getting used to!

Although between fiddling with making some new custom work details, specialising certain dwarves to only do assigned tasks, and assigning certain workshops to a master, I've been able to get quite a bit of granular control over labours again.

So I did some testing, where i had a dwarf specialized in only one of the stone skills, and restricted their labours to only those they were proficient in.

Engraving now only does the artistic engravings, not the smoothing process.
Cutting now focuses on smoothing stone floors and walls, carving minecart tracks on floors, carving fortifications AND cutting stone BLOCKS at the masonry.
Carving has essentially replaced masonry as the workshop skill, barring the before mentioned blocks.
Masonry has now been delegated to building constructions out of stone, such as bridges and the like, but NOT walls, floors, roads, etc, those seem to be more "general" building jobs, though I haven't done an extensive list of what jobs require mason and which one don't.

Do note that the "Architect" skill has been removed completely from the skill list on SteamDF, so you no longer need to dedicate a dwarf or to to designing your bridges, your masons and carpenters do that directly when building them now.
