Hey I got one!  So I made this fortress and managed to get a masterful item made, unfortunately I never managed to get my farming started so we ran out of food and I abandoned before everyone starved to death.  Anyway, I sent a brave dwarven Swordsman in investigate the abandoned fortress in hopes of finding the engraver's masterpiece.  I got to the entrance just fine and encountered no resistance.  I entered and went up a side passage through some mining stockpiles into the kitchen and from there I got to the dining room.  Then I noticed something that wasn't there when I left.

Unfortunately, I deleted my log file so I don't have it with me right now. But what happened was I went into a cave with one hammerman and about 4 drunks. Everyone died except the hammerman. She was attacked by a cyclops which broke her shield arm before I could attack it. Once I got there, I hacked at it with my axe and missed. It double counter-attacked me and broke one of my legs.. I was stunned, it broke both of my arms, I gave into the pain. Then the hammer man got a lucky shot in the head and knocked the cyclops out and then killed it.

I crawled that character out of the cave and into the nearest town and let him rest. He earned it through rescuing a damsel in distress, even though it was a pretty lousy attempt.

I killed some guys on their beds, and then found a sleeping spearman. And this is what happened next. I was surprised that he blocked many times (even counterstrike)when he was sleeping(I saw the flashing Z).

I've been lucky enough to encounter very few Elite Bowmen.  One time I had a party to catch the arrows, the second time he was standing at the top of a staircase so I just kept pressing up until he fell apart.  I've had a few insane battles in ruins where I get surrounded by undead but thanks to my dwarf character's shield, armor, and skill, and just plain old freakishly good luck, I just stand there(or rather lie there since with all those charges one of them had to knock me over) and hack at the thinest wall until I'm free.  It's utterly insane.

Well it wasn't my first quest ever, but that's how my first trip to a ruin ended.  It's funny, cause undead are actually really easy to fight as long as you don't let them do that to you, but they always do that to you if you aren't careful.  Really though, with my super badass dwarven swordmaster I've actually been surrounded and stood on top of and only taken minor scraches thanks to my armor, shield, and skill with them.  At that point what you want to do is just continuously attack any one of the surrounding opponents that doesn't have anyone else in his square until he goes down, then crawl out of there, stand up, and run.  Well, that's all of course assuming your character is advanced enough to survive the first round of being surrounded.
