"No access to Item" when trying to build weapon traps.
« on: November 13, 2022, 04:19:25 am »

I have both mechanisms and spiked balls in a quantum stockpile but i get "No access to Item" even if trying to build in the same room as the stockpile. Is there something else I need in order to place weapon traps (I thought it was just mechanisms)? Or is this a bug and if so is there a known workaround?

Note. This is also affecting upright spear/spike traps and re-starting DF did not fix it.

If you have anything else in the stockpile (a quern, or just a bit of rock) and try to build that on the sane spot, does it still happen? How about an item in general, not in the QSP, or an ktem on the QSP somewhere else crom your desired trap-spot? You've not got a workshop (or more than one) in the room for which the impassible tiles are 'invisibly' restricting access? The components you hope to use are not being [TASK]ed for something else or Forbidden or something?

There's a few more things I'd perhaps then realise I'd need to check (and probably found I'd overloked something), but not sure which 'simpler' ones you might have completely ruled out already.

Are you sure that the dwarf generating the message isn’t stuck in a tree?

Really hoping somebody puts this in their signature.

Thanks for the replies. ... The issue sorted itself while I slept (without me turning off DF)

I first noticed the issue in a freshly dug out trap hallway and trying to debug I moved my focus to the storage room to eliminate variables. Without moving my build cursor I was switching to other trap types, levers, and gear assemblies but those 2 were the only ones giving me issues.

As to dwarves getting stuck: this was during the placement phase. Same place as the "Needs Mechanisms" message should go if I did not have mechanisms.

It may have sorted itself in the half hour I spent planning out stonefall traps or in the 5 hours I had it paused. If I encounter it again, any tips on gathering useful debug data? ... is that message even part of the base game? Some part of my brain wants to pin this on DFHack's planning mode now.

I wouldn't normally have thought it would have been sorted during a game-pause (except if you, say, unlocked a door or similar during that pause), but I can't say for sure what DFHack stuff you're using might be doing... I rarely use anything of it. But I'm sure that (under circumstances that I tend to facepalm myself about getting into) I've seen you 'error' on odd occasions... ;)

I'm thinking that the other live 'planning' might have just carried you through the point at which either dorfs or the fort layout was playing awkward buggers. Which can be transient. Something as 'simple' as a bit of temporarily deep water draining across a pathway can make nobs you set up nicely then start to fail when someone actually gets round to trying to do it. (But I don't think this applies at all to you, just an example.)

The phrase "No access to" is coming from the DF binary and it probably is the catch-all message the user is intended to never see because the reason for the message shouldn't exist. It probably is related to Planning Mode.

If you did a save-reload and then after was still unable to build directly in the room, I'm not sure what the right solution would be. Try:
- cancelling unfinished constructions that include mechanisms
- looking for and retrieving any unreachable mechanisms (underwater, etc)
- use 't' on the traps that were built and see if any of the mechanisms look wrong

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I had something very similar with cage traps, I built maybe 20/25 in a row, some inside some outside. All the traps where built with no issue and all but 4 where loaded with cages. Then I started having issues, I got the message that there were no cages available even tough I could see I had at least 10 empty(I checked) ones in my stockpile. I built 10 more, bought 6 more and still nothing.

I also noticed that many  of the hauling jobs were failing without warning. I would see say some food in my kitchen workshop getting flagged for hauling and 10/15 seconds later it got u-flagged but didn't move anywhere. Then rinse and repeat with the next item and it was cycling through all of the long list of items stuck in my workshops.
I tried removing and rebuilding the 4 cage traps with no avail.
I ended up removing them and my hauling issues stopped.

I haven't dared trying again as I had a lot of issues to solve due partly to all the items that had been left in the workshops during the issue.
I also was reluctant to report the issue as I have some mods installed and also the game was updated since I started this fortress.
Having a game update mid game can cause issues.
