Tables are containers that store their contents on their upper surface.

Beds are tables that store sleeping dwarves.

for many years the suggestion forum has existed as a sort of soft muddy alluvial fan, collecting the suggestion-sediment that settles from the ever-flowing river of new visitors to Bay12

So metal bedframes and cloth mattresses have already been suggested…

At least no one has suggested my idea of adding short, sturdy creatures that are fond of drink and industry, before!

I'll keep suggesting it until it gets added to the game. Post all the lists you want, I don't give a shit.

It could be that metal beds are intentionally left out, since they've appeared relatively late in history (17th century)?

So did metal buckets, and crutches, but Blacksmiths can still crank those out just fine. I wouldn't take current game implementation as absolute gospel, especially as we can still do ridiculous things like encrust ropes and even arrows with precious gemstones.

Personally, I'm in favor of metal beds. Not only is there no good reason to restrict the material, it allows fortresses stuck with a surplus of non-weapon ores to put it to some use, other than simply making crafts for export.
