Jack Dandy would like to schmooze with the mayor, but The Man In Grey is better suited to something a little more heartwarming and a little less social.

Jack Dandy and The Man In Grey rush to help those cats!

Mission: #4 It’s Mangling Time
Participants: Sol Heart, Iron Gavel

For their first mission, Sol and Iron unanimously decided to rush to Downtown to stop the Mangler from ushering further chaos among the populace. Sol couldn't help but feel excited and worried at the prospect of their first mission as a Superhero Team, which would determine if Sol was fit to be a team leader or not.

Extra interviews each hero in turn, not bothering to put their abilities to the test but instead asking questions about their history. Taking perhaps too much joy in cutting deep with her words. Of the applicants, a few were infuriated by this, but one fuzzball cut back instead.

She thought it over a bit later. She supposed that Bloodmoon was like her after all. Unrestrained by that alien concept of mercy. Not something to be extended to prey, it would be... unnatural.

Some time later, while chatting with Bloodmoon, she heard a few different rumors cycling among the nightclub clientele. Of course, only two of them really seem relevant, and one of them is both louder and closer to Extra's turf...

Mangler! Put the mind whammy on him and let Bloodmoon do their thing.

[WARNING! HEADCANON AHEAD]

True to his reputation, Iron Gavel was a rugged man built like an ox. He entered the Starlight where they had agreed to meet and stopped before the table Sol was sat at, offering them a handshake. Contrary to his appearance, Iron Gavel was quite polite and well-spoken, overall very professional. As agreed, they hadn't exchanged their private information and referred to each other using their superhero names.

"Thank you for accepting my invitation Mister Iron. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"The pleasure is mine, your reputation isn't to be scoffed at after all."

After exchanging greetings, the two superheroes dove straight into the matter at hand.

"So you want to recruit me in your team. I'm not opposed to it, but this is still quite the surprise as I hardly see how we could synergize. Judging from your profile, you seem to be the kind to resolve matters peacefully through diplomacy, and compromises. I do not settle for compromises when dealing with villains, you cannot be unaware of that fact."

"It is true that we do not mesh well together at a glance. And I also do not intend to renege on my principles, that anyone is deserving of forgiveness. Yet I called out to you with this in mind, as you possess qualities I lack. Your strength, your outlook, and your experience. My objective is not to stifle or be stifled, but to grow and become a superhero capable of helping even more people. For that reason I chose you."

Sol was unsure if Iron laughed to mock them or not. Still, the man seemed to have maybe warmed up a bit more at the idea of working with Sol.

"Quite brazen for a person as frail as you. But I guess that's one of the qualities required to be a superhero. I like that, I have high hopes for your trial period. Let's see if you can put some results behind your words."

Having found some sort of accord, the two of them then discussed the specifics of the contract as well as the trial period. They finished by exchanging some information about their powers, personalities and overall superhero history. Maybe they would each learn more of each other after the first mission.

(NTQ is clearly in over his head taking 8 players lol)

Lets see. Everyone else has already taken every job except the fighting one, and as it turns out neither of us can actually fight. I guess we'll protect the mayor since PB&J are charming and good with people and I'm rich (which is better).

Yes, they do. You have currently have two out of a maximum of two people on your team.
Also, NQT requested that team sheets - that is, their parsed version of your proposal plus the details for any non-leader recruits - be posted with actions.
(Stirk, that means that you should also put PB&J in your sheet.)

NOTES

Everyone starts with +1 reputation in the region where their base is held, and +0 reputation elsewhere. Add this "Reputation:" to your team sheet.

You are responsible for keeping your sheet updated. Note down any changes from the mission phase.

Note, in the encounters that follow, each mission is rolled for (along with consequences), with powers and a capped number of traits taken into account.

MISSION PHASE ONE RESULTS

#1 Cats Up A Tree
Jack Dandy travel across into Montgomery and soon find the tree in question, a huge oak in Montgomery Park. It has several dozen cats up it. A small crowd of cat owners and onlookers have gathererd around.

The Man in Grey, wearing his long grey trenchcoat, grey domino mask, and grey fedora, gazes up at the tree. "Tall order," he says.

"Not with Jack Dandy on the case!" Jack Dandy vows before the crowd. He sets about leaping from bough to bough, while The Man In Grey holds out a large blanket to catch any cat that should fall.

"NOT SO FAST, CAPED CATASTROPHES!" bellows a booming man's voice. A tall man in a velvet suit and a dog mask, with one humongous right arm, steps out from behind a tree.

"What cape?" The Man In Grey wonders quietly.

"THOSE CATS BELONG UP THAT TREE! OR MY NAME ISN'T BARON VON WOOF!"

Jack Dandy nimbly drops down from the tree. He shares exchanges a glance with The Man In Grey. So... a comedy villain. These guys perform acts of nuisance and make money from going on podcasts.

"JACK DANDY, I PRESUME?"

Baron von Woof strides over and The Man In Grey fades from view.  The Baron swipes his great arm at Jack Dandy. Jack ducks under the first blow, then leaps over the second. This goes on for a while, the onlookers filming on their phones, before Baron von Woof pulls out a kitten from his inside jacket pocket and throws it!

"GO LONG, JACK!"

Jack heroically runs out, dives and safely catches the kitten. By this point Baron von Woof has made his escape. The Man In Grey unfades from view.

"Where were you?" Jack demands.

"I can't help it, it was dangerous..." the Man shrugs.

The pair then spend the rest of the afternoon rescuing the remaining cats from the tree and posing for selfies with the relieved cat owners.

OUTCOME:
Baron von Woof joins the Rogue's Gallery
Mission: Success
Jack gains trait "Nemesis: Baron von Woof"
The Man in Grey gains +1 fame.
Mission reward: The Dandy Lads gain +1 Reputation in Montgomery

#2 The Mayor’s Fundraising Party
The Mayor's fundraising party is mostly a schmooze-fest with some rather dull speeches. Representatives from House Edge and The Watch are here, as well as some of the biggest heroes in the city.

Marigold, cleared of the recent manslaughter charges is here in a gold-leaf dress. No one is shaking her hand: being able to turn things to gold with a single touch will do that.

The Harpoodle is preening for the cameras, his bouffant hair curly and his claws gleaming. Meanwhile, The Chorist and Joshua Tree are hobnobbing with a local bishop.

Princess Professional, dressed in a business suit and tiara, is enduring a long-winded story from middle-aged hero, Mimesis about how she took down the Mangler.

PB & J, attempt to make the mayor laugh by duplicating and unduplicating while they shake hands. It comes off more as unsettling. Luke Teach manages to make a good impression, finding the Mayor's dropped cufflink.

Sally Sixpence, wearing an expensive gown and an understated domino mask for the event, spots a waitress with an slightly stiff gait. She walks behind the waitress and grabs her arm as she moves towards the mayor with a plate of champagne.

"Get off of me!"

"Not today, Spyte," Sally says. She had noticed the purple tips of the supervillain Spyte's poison barbs lightly extruding from her sleeve, ready to brush against the mayor.

Spyte's old team, Excision, had been broken up by the Mayor as part of his re-election campaign to clamp down on the number of excessive slayings by vigilantes. Surrounded by heroes, Spyte buttons up and alows herself to be taken away.

OUTCOME:
Spyte is captured
Mission: House Edge: Success. The Watch: Major Success
PB+J: gains +1 fame
Luke Teach: gains +1 fame
Sally Sixpence gains +2 fame
Mission reward: House Edge and The Watch gain temporary +1 team fame [Attended Mayor Party] (this will eventually expire)

#3 Ruckus at an E. Corporation Lab
The rest of Team Watch poke about the E. Corporation building. It's not hard to find the source of the commotion: a huge whole is rent into the side of the wall.

Frostara looks at the hole. She's dressed in an ice-blue frock, and is dual-weilding the hollow pistol-shaped devices she uses to focus her ice generation.

"Shall I...?"

Retry holds up a hand and moves to go through the hole. A few moments later she resets the time-loop.

"Shall I...?" Frostara says for the first time again.

Retry nods.

The pair head in together this time, heading deeper into the lab, following the trails of broken walls. They notice several cryogenic chambers that have been broken open in the ruckus, but nothing is inside them.

As they move in, they start to feel a whistle of wind. Bits of paper tumble past them towards the centre of the lab. The get through the last open bit of wall, and amidst smashed lab equipment and a broken mainframe, there is a human-shaped black void.

Frostara tries to block off its escape with ice walls, but the ice cracks and hurtles into it. Nothing that touches the man remains.

"get back" the Void whispers, his words caught and pulled back in. "i don't want to hurt you."

Retry and Frostara, unsure how to contain him, and not wishing to be pulled in, back away.

"it's happening again..." Void whispers. "i will see you soon..."

Void implodes, his blackhole self pulling in on itself, taking the entirety of the room with it. Frostara sprays ice and skates with incredible speed out of the building. Retry, after a failed attempt and time reset, manages to escape too.

Outside, catching their breath, Retry begins to have second doubts over Frostara's role in the team, while Frostara is filled with dread over her brush with death.

OUTCOME
Void joins the Rogue's Gallery
Mission: Moderate failure
Retry: Team cohesion check [4+2+[1]=7]: Retry gains trait Unsure About Frostara.
Frostara: Gains trait "Dread-filled"

#4 It’s Mangling Time
The Mangler is seven foot tall, with arms like tree-trunks, with skin as tough as iron. He is laughing with joy as he smashes cars and shop windows, and twists lamp-posts.

Constellation Aurora and PUNCH! arrive at the scene at the same time.

From Constellation Aurora, there is the beautiful Sol Heart and the ox-like Iron Gavel, weilding his giant hammer.

From PUNCH!, Mistress Extra appears alongside Bloodmoon, who is already an eight-foot long giant slathering wolf.

"More meat to mangle!" the Mangler cries, enthusiastically moving towards the heroes.

Constellation Aurora act first: Sol Heart tries to sooth the Mangler with a glance, but he's only got eyes for Iron Gavel. Iron Gavel slams his hammer straight down on the Mangler, but it only slows the villain down.

Mistress Extra jumps into Mangler's mind for but a moment, though it already is a warped and twisted place, the intercession distracts the Mangler. Meanwhile, Bloodmoon howls, leaps on his back, and while the villain is distracted by hammer blows and nightmare visions, the werewolf clamps her jaws down on Mangler's head.

His impervious skin prevents his head being torn off, but Mangler is steadily choked out while Iron Gavel keeps him occupied.

Eventually the Mangler collapses. Bloodmoon makes herself scarce before the authorities turn up.

Iron Gavel checks for breathing. "The son-of-a-bitch is dead. I'm not crying over it."

After the bout, a shopkeeper whose shop was saved, puts an interesting proposition to Mistress Extra and Sol Heart.

OUTCOME
Mangler is dead.
Mission: Success
Mistress Extra: Additional opportunity.
Bloodmoon: Has broken Probation conditions. Loses trait "On Probabation" and gains trait "Outlaw". Gains +1 fame.
Sol Heart: Additional opportunity.
Iron Gavel: gains +1 fame.
Mission reward: Constellation Aurora and PUNCH! gain +1 reputation in Downtown, and temporary +1 team fame bonus "Beat the Mangler".

#5 Silver Ring Sting
The Bro Club lie in wait behind the counter of a jewelery store. They're waiting for hours when the window suddenly smashes in. Three goons in masks and a barrel-chested woman dressed in a pink jumpsuit enter the shop. The goons set about smashing the display cases while the woman keeps a close eye. As the move, the goons become quicker and quicker, until their actions are a blur to the eye. This is clearly Haste, a local supervillain who gives others speed.

"You don't want to do th-" Chase begins to say, as he emerges from behind the counter, before being promptly whacked in the face by a bag of necklaces, swung by a super-speeding goon.

Bolt Blue leaps out and starts a small tornado in the centre of the shop. It sucks in the goons and all their stolen loot. Their speeding soon stops, as it appears Haste has made a getaway during the ruckus.

It's not likely she'll make a reappareance, but Chase vows to be better prepared next time.

OUTCOME
Mission: Success
Bro Club pay for the damages in the shop . It doesn't impact their current finances.
Chase Brody: Gains trait "Prepared"
Bolt Blue: +1 fame

Mission reward: Bro Club gain +1 reputation in Silver Row.

#6 Fight In Underground Superpower Fighting Ring & #7 Break Up Superhero Fighting Ring
In a basement arena, surrounded by a baying crowd, Lynxxx and Helltooth, the Spider Knights, fight their way through the rounds. They're an odd couple, him, strange in his dull black supersuit, her dressed in a showy lynx-print leotard. She leaps about the arena keeping foes occupied, while Helltooth wades in and threatens brutal death with his fangs.

Not wishing to meet a sticky end, their opposing team have been playing it safe and fighting defensively. The bout is against a new pairing called The Rejects, made up of the small red, horned child, Spawn of Satan, and Monkeypaw, whose curse-aura has stopped anyone getting a good hit in.

Suddenly the doors to the basement smash in, and on a hyper-speeding golf cart, all three of Route Horizon burst in. Longfire, a slim man in a flame-red super-suit; Lovehandles, a larger than life man in shorts and t-shirt and a lop-sided domino mask; and the leader, and driver, Endless Highway, in his racing outfit.

Immediately a fight breaks out. Some of the crowd flee, while others stay and take footage.

Route Horizon struggle to pin the Spider Knights down, while the Rejects manage to escape with the crowd.

"Hear kitty, kitty..." Lovehandles calls to Lynxxx, who has has leapt up to the rafters. Longfire scares her down by teleporting in flames near her. She lands on Lovehandle's head and scatches his face with her clawed gauntlets.

Helltooth, not wanting to kill other heroes, but also not wanting to get caught up in a crackdown, considers that other combatants have forfeited the fight. He grabs his winnings from the shocked organiser and makes to leave with Lynxxx.

Endless Highway rollerskates in front of him. "Where are you going?"

Helltooth bares his teeth, as Lynxxx leaps across the room and lands on Endless Highway's back smashing him spread-eagled across the floor.

Longfire rushes over, making a wall of flame appear in front of the Spider Knights. Helltooth grabs hold of him and sinks half a fang into his arm... just enough venom to slow him down, hopefully not enough to kill him...

While Longfire is screaming in agony, the Spider Knights get away.

As Endless Highway comes to, his heart is racing and his mind full of shame over the poor fight performance. The fight was broken up at least, it's one less job for the stretched authories.

As he's gathering himself up, he feels different... in frustration, he hits the door frame, but instead of feeling it through his driving gloves, there's a loud bang instead... over the next few days he realises that the stress of the fight has induced a new mutation!

Outcome:
Mission: Route Horizon: Team success; Personal Failure. Spider Knights: Success
Helltooth: +1 fame
Lynxxx: +1 fame
Endless Highway: Gains new power: Energy Conversion (kinetic to sound): Can convert nearby kinetic energy (the force of an impact) into loud sounds and loud sounds into physical force.
Longfire: Gains injury: Poisoned
Lovehandles: Gains trait: Hates Lynxxx.
Mission reward: Spider Knights gain +1 income from the huge pot (now Comfortable). Spider Knights gain +1 Team Infamy.
Route Horizon gain an additional Opportunity.

OPPORTUNITIES PHASE ONE
The Watch: After the mission, Retry keeps spotting Void at the end of the street at night, or across the water of the river. She's convinced he's trying to reach out. He just wants answers and an end to his torment... she could help?
Offer: Void could join as a team member (without taking up a slot, as Void cannot attend the base), but at the cost of +1 team infamy.

Bro Club
: Brody finds out about one of his father's aborted construction projects: a waterfront manor in Sandup. He has access to it and no one would know they were there. It has a lot of potential, even if it's half built at the moment and only has a Small living space.
Offer: +1 base size, but have to move to a half-built manor in Sandup.

PUNCH!: 1. Some of the local casino bosses feel a much greater need for hero protection. The work isn't quite honest, but the pay is good.
Offer: +1 income level, but +1 team infamy for doing protection work on the side for dubious casino bosses.
2. A downtown shop owner has asked PUNCH! to be involved in the cleanup activities after the Mangler's rampage. It'll cost a lot of money in lost income, but the people of Downtown will be very impressed.
Offer: +2 reputation in Downtown, for -1 income level.

The Dandy Lads:
1. After the cat episode, an idle fancy passes Dandy Jack's mind: he could put a treehouse in this Oak Tree and work out of Montgomery! It'd certainly make a splash, but it wouldn't be any larger than their current base.
Offer: +1 team fame, but move base to Montgomery.

Constellation Aurora:
1. After the fight, Iron Gavel is downcast. While the team played a huge part, they weren't ultimately responsible for taking down the villain. He suggests making a public announcement to that effect where they refuse to take credit for beating the Mangler.
Offer: Iron Gavel gains trait "Respects Sol Heart"; Sol Heart gains trait "Honest", -1 reputation in Downtown

2. A downtown shop owner has asked Constellation Aurora to be involved in the cleanup activities after the Mangler's rampage. It'll be very long and tiring work, but the people of Downtown will be very impressed.
Offer: +2 reputation in Downtown, Sol gains trait "Exhausted"

Route Horizon:
1. The mechanics shop could be expanded out, but this would mean no patrols for a while, while the team dealt with the building work.
Offer: +1 base size, -1 reputation in Warren

2. After working with the authorities to shut down the fight ring, the police asks for a member of Team Horizon to join them with training the police in anti-power manoeuvres in Old Town.
Offer: +1 reputation in Old Town, whoever is sent misses the next mission phase.

Spider Knights: After news gets around about the fight, a circus boss has offered Lynxxx some work in their next show. It doesn't pay much, but it'd raise the team's profile locally.
Offer: +1 reputation in Dusk Beach, but Lynxxx is occupied for the next phase

House Edge: While at the fundraising party, one of the functionaries mentions in passing that the local Museum has been closed for repairs for renovation. Looking into it, Luke Teach sees an opportunity to put in a secret base among the musuem's archival collections, hidden behind a freize of the god Fortuna.
Offer: +1 base size, have to move to Old Town.

SECOND RECRUITMENT PHASE

Note: I have clarified some mechanics around becoming a villain team in the OP.

Firing
Players may fire existing team members in one of three ways:

Let Go: Thing didn't work out. Team member leaves. -1 attendee at the next tryout (this malus can stack if you fire multiple heroes).
Run Out: They'll never work in this town again! Team Leader gains "Hates [team member]" and the team member gains "Hates [team leader]" and leaves the team and gains -1 fame from the ignominy.
Revolt: The team leader is thrown out! The old leader gains "Hates [team name]", -1 fame from the ignominy and leaves the team. Pick a new team leader.

Hiring
Everyone who has slots may either seek to recruit one hero from the recruitment pool OR they may hold tryouts to fill all slots.

Reminder: you can't recruit someone with a higher fame than your team's fame.

If two people try to recruit the same hero from the pool, I'll flip to see who gets to them first.

Spoiler: Recruitment Pool (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Rogue Gallery (click to show/hide)

Here's a reminder of the Tryout process, from the OP. A new tryout strategy has been added 'renown'.
Spoiler: Tryouts (click to show/hide)

I'll give you all 24 hours (+ however long it takes me to get into the thread) to respond to opportunities and recruitment. If you want to pass, please say as much.

Aren't sound waves already kinetic energy? Darn superheroes breaking physics...

No wait I had an actual relevant question. How do we increase base size? Or am I stuck putting PB&J clones through hell until I have a full team that way?
