FOURTH RECRUITMENT PHASE

Firing
Spoiler: Firing (click to show/hide)

Hiring
Everyone who has slots may either seek to recruit one hero from the recruitment pool OR they may hold tryouts to fill all slots.

Reminder: you can't recruit someone with a higher fame than your team's fame.

If two people try to recruit the same hero from the pool, I'll flip to see who gets to them first.

Spoiler: Rogue Gallery (click to show/hide)

Here's a reminder of the Tryout process, from the OP. A new tryout strategy has been added 'renown'.

I'll give you all 24 hours (+ however long it takes me to get into the thread) to respond to opportunities and recruitment. If you want to pass, please say as much.

Spoiler: The Watch (click to show/hide)

Void and Sally will work on setting up a subterranean component to the Watch’s base.
No recruiting will happen this turn.

Despite the graveyard site, the Watch's base was bereft of gloom. Allison's therapy session had gone well, though she felt like it had mostly been putting the finishing touches on healing she'd already gotten started on. Chiffon - real name Mari Chang - was awkwardly-but-exuberantly recounting the picnic she and Caroline had with the new 'Cutting Edge' team and "that, uh, 'Andy' guy?" Sally wasn't talking about the Doppelswap situation yet; there was a time and place for everything, and nobody wanted to hear about that just now. Now, the money, everybody had loved that; there were already plans to get Mari a more professional-looking costume, based on the sort of clothes chefs at fancy restaurants wore.

Cara was most of the way through jotting down His name is 'Dandy' when there was a knock at the door. "I-I-I'll get it!" The Watch's youngest member - a few months younger than Cara - dashed off from her seat and darted around the corner to the front door.

hi-uh, who...?
There was a shrill squeak as Mari skittered back a bit from the door, but Cara ran up to the front with a grin on her face. Framed by the doorway was David, wearing the same shabby hoodie as always, white hair in an absolute mess. She got the impression he was looking at Mari confusedly, though it was a bit hard to tell with the pitch-black eyes. Cara waved him in eagerly, leading him and Mari back to the living room.

Sally and Allison were both a bit surprised - no fear in Allison's eyes, Cara was glad to see - before Sally narrowed her eyes and grinned.
"You two haven't actually met yet, have you."

"practice was good... i, uh, i've got some better control over my episodes, now..."

Introductions, thankfully (though not unexpectedly), went smoothly. David's story was one that easily inspired sympathy, and Mari was somebody whose sympathy was easily inspired. She was rather disappointed about David not being able to consistently be at base like everyone else, but his assurances that the team had arranged comfortable shelter for him assuaged that.
Cara, meanwhile, was gleefully amusing herself by tossing one of Mari's flight cookies at David (before resetting, obviously), wondering if him absorbing one would count as eating it. She was pretty sure Sally had figured out what she was doing, but she was keeping quiet. Probably going to try to guilt her into living at an apartment she'd pay for later.

"so, i, had an idea? now that, well, now that i can do stuff around, uh, things, more safely... maybe i could help with the base...?"

Oooh? Not only did this sound like an interesting idea, he also had Sally's attention. Maybe this could distract her from planning that talk later.
Elab"orate?" Ah, excellent, everybody's interested.

David scratched the back of his head. "well, uh... excavation, you know? secret entrances, underground chambers... black holes are pretty good at turning occupied space into unoccupied space, after all."

Cara's grin was a wide one. Imagine, an entire underground base, just like all the best comic heroes had! Like Batman, and, uh. Her grim stiffened a bit. Sue her, she didn't actually read many superhero comics.

Mari's brow was furrowed, though. "W-wait. We're, our base- there's an, um. Graveyard. Around us. Right? It'd- it'd be bad if we. Well. If we accidentally disturbed-" Her face had started to take on a green tinge, so it was a good thing when Sally cut in.
"We'll go a decent ways down before branching out, cupcake. And I'll be with him making sure that everything's structurally secure and doesn't poke anything we don't want it to."

Perfection. So it's decided, then? David and Sally will work on getting us our very own bona-fide subterranean base expansion?
Sally gave a curt nod, while David's was a bit stiffer. Allison held up a thumbs-up with a small smirk on her face, while Mari seemed to do something of a bobblehead impression.
Motion carries, awesome.

Caroline's smile said 'conversation closed'. Meanwhile, while the others didn't see it - likely deliberately - Sally's quick glances from Cara's cookie to David, and then swiftly to eye contact with her fearless leader said something rather different.

God damnit.

"Once again, the scenery changes! The Dandy Lads will now work out of a cutting edge laboratory!"

Jack furrows his brow.

"Speaking of labs, that professor's offer... sounds shady, and not at all family friendly. I suggest you decline!"

The Man In Grey nods calmly.

Accept moving offer, decline clinical trial offer.

Constellation Aurora

Post-Mission Fluff #1

Sol picked up the patch of orange hair, immediately recognizing the characteristic tuft of hair as belonging to a certain reverend. With their suspicions confirmed, Sol fell in a somber mood as they tried to understand the motives of Cephala and the Odd Squad.

Meanwhile Iron Gavel was happily humming while removing affectionately wiping his hammer to remove a bit of motor oil left over from the last smashed car. Reading the mood from Sol's pensive expression, he stopped humming and cleared his throat.

"Why the long face leader?"

"The Odd Squad was involved in this mayhem."

"Oh yeah, the ones you got a grudge on? Lucky us then, we will be able to get back at them for what they did to you."

The kind and forgiving Sol didn't answer right away.

"It's not a grudge, really. I just don't understand their motives, and why they would do that. And as a hero, I can't let them continue threatening the lives of innocent bystanders."

Right as he was about to add something, Iron was cut off by some mildly obnoxious woman.

"Sweetie, that's totally a grudge. It's okay I understand, even I had a few when I was young and spirited."

"Yeah you totally don't have something against the Chorist."

"This and that is different, Gavel boy."

"Gavel boy?"

In the background Mimesis and Iron Gavel started bickering over increasingly petty and sometimes embarassing subjects, from their costumes to the fact Mimesis somehow knew Iron Gavel had named his hammer. To an onlooker it would have looked like Iron Gavel was being bullied by the mocking and irritating Mimesis.

Sol was in another world of their own, looking upward with many questions in their head, and conflicted feelings in their heart.

Post-Mission Fluff #2

Iron Gavel barged in the cramped basement, holding a newspaper bent in two from his powerful grip. He slammed it on the table, exposing its headline.

[NEW HERO SOL HEART AND VETERAN MIMESIS JOIN HANDS TO STOP CRAZED CAR HIJACKING IN SILVER ROW ft. CONSTELLATION AURORA]

"OH COME ON! They seriously "forgot" to feature me in the article?"

"Gavel Boy, it's not your fault you are so unmarketable. These journalists are naturally attracted to charismatic heroes, like me and dear Sol."

"Since when were you charismatic again?"

"Haaa, a hammerhead like you just wouldn't get it. You lack style, and the know-how to skillfully expose your accomplishments to the public. You can't just go wildly swinging your hammer and muscles around."

Sol quickly intervened before another spat started.

"You were amazing back then Iron! You were ready to protect us with your body. And you know, your accomplishments didn't go unnoticed in the eyes of the public! Look, there is even some fan mail for you."

Iron Gavel started to calm down and smile, softened by the praise. But Mimesis returned to the assault, picking one drawing made by a child. It was a crude and colourful drawing of a big, muscled ogre with a hammer and two big fangs, and a burning car in the background. It totally looked like a supervillain doing some mischief.

"Is that an ogre? If that is how the public is seeing you, then that's hilarious!"

Iron Gavel completely ignored the blatant mockery, focusing his attention on the drawing. He chuckled a bit.
"Heh, not bad. I look kinda cool on that one."

Opportunity

Quote
Mimesis might be more likeable than first appears, if people could get to know her and her communication style. As irritating as she can be, there's a heroic core deep down that drove her to be a hero.
Offer: Mimesis gains trait "Well-Meaning", but cannot be sent alone for a mission for the next two missions.

Regardless of the little friendly spat Iron Gavel and Mimesis just had, it was clear the team performed well together. That for Sol was a resounding success, which assuaged their doubts about their qualities as a leader and a hero. Sol's initially mixed opinion of Mimesis had also improved, and Sol could see why the Manager had recommended her despite her peculiar personality. Inside, she really was a bona fide hero.

Sol entered the cafe Starlight to see Mimesis and the Manager conversing about the good old days. Unwilling to disturb them but nonetheless curious, Sol decided to openly eavesdrop by taking a seat nearby.

"What about that time in '04 when we stopped the rampage of Lord Bombarrel with the help of Tin Soldier?"

"Yes, I perfectly remember when Tin Soldier saved us from a rather explosive predicament. If you call getting in the way as helping, I guess. And didn't you nearly got us all killed?"

"Oh come on, we were a fine distraction admit it! And how could I know that villain used teleporting bombs... enclosing us in an invisible cube to protect the civilians and us was the right call with what we knew, admit it! Have a bit of romance."

The two veterans took a sip of coffee, chuckling like old friends reminiscing of the past.

"I never got to ask, but how did you end up solo again? I recall you were in a team called the Phenomenal Five?"

"Heh, they couldn't keep up with me, especially that lass with the short fuse. You know? The Woman Lamp. And also, they had a little problem with work romance... they didn't appreciate my advice on the matter. But weeell, you can say I have just been drifting from team to team ever since we disbanded. Ha... you really did us dirty by getting injured like this. Do you know how hard it was to keep the fire going without our leader?"

"Sorry Marianne."

"Jeez why the long face? I was just teasing you! We all know you were hit the hardest by your retirement, you were the most passionate of us all."

The Manager gave a rare frowned smile, chuckling. Around that point Iron Gavel arrived, taking a distant seat with a cup of coffee.
"You really haven't changed, in a good way. You still have room for improvement though."

"Come ooon, aren't I always at my best?"

Sol decided to take this chance to chime in, saying what was on their mind in all honesty.

"I agree! And I think it is truly unfair that people are mistaken about you. Sure you have a sharp tongue and you can be very annoying to deal with, but I have seen first hand that you truly are a heroic person."

Iron Gavel coughed violently as he laughed while drinking his coffee, before realising Sol was not joking. He was looking in this direction in disbelief.

"Lucio dear, I think I just got insulted right in my face."

"Sol isn't wrong, which is giving me a nice idea. Hmm hmm..."

Worry washed over Mimesis face, as she knew first hand this sinister laugh always hid devious plots.

"Oh dear, not that laugh..."

The Mayor Party Fame Bonus has now worn off.

MISSION PHASE 4

Note: some events will only occur if an area was visited during the mission phase (through missions or patrols).

#0 Personal Mission
You may assign a person for a personal mission. Name one of the following goals, assign someone to it, and you will usually gain a related opportunity in the opportunity phase.

Spoiler: Personal Missions (click to show/hide)

#1 Funeral For A Foe
The Mangler is being buried in Zircon County Cemetery in Greenbelt, along with about twenty tons of concrete to dissuade graverobbers. Old friends and enemies are going to be at the funeral to pay their last respects. Veteran heroes are likely to want to attend. A temporary truce in hostilities has been called, but who knows what will happen, as several classic villains are expected to turn up.

#2 Hostage Situation
A gang of Evolved-Supremacists called Dark Humor have taken hostage the staff and patrons of an art gallery in Mireton. They are considered armed and incredibly dangerous. They refuse to deal with the police, and are asking for exactly four fellow Evolveds to come into the gallery in exchange for hostages and to hear their demands. They don't want any funny business.

#3 Rooftop Rumble
Baron von Woof is at it again! This time he's escalated his activities. He's trapped a Catherine, a Katerina, and a Kathleen on the roof of Oak Towers. Oak Towers is a thirty-storey housing block in Warren.

#4 Lost Lasers
E. Labs have reported a huge theft of "experimental lasers" which occured during the car mayhem the previous week. Using proprietary tracking technology that isn't recognised by the formal authorities, they believe they've located the stolen goods, within a gated compound in Hermitage. They're putting together a strike-team to recover the lasers. Participating heroes should be prepared to face lethal countermeasures.

#5 Fast Money
Several people have been spotted on camera recently at the Silver Dollar casino (in Dusk Beach) using incredibly fast sleight of hand tricks. They've barred the perpetrators, but different people keep doing it. The manager thinks he's spotted the same woman in the background of the footage several times, and her description matches that of Haste. Could be an opportunity for a sting?

#6 Maxine Power Rally
Maxine Power is holding a rally in front of city hall, in Old Town, as a part of her election campaign. She's running on an anti-supervillain platform, promising to empower both the police and costumed heroes in wiping out supercrime all together. The existing mayor has been concerned about violent vigilantism, pointing to recent extrajudicial slayings. Attending the rally will be seen as supporting her agenda.

Go long, Jack! Jack Dandy and Lotus Petal have to save a Cat and two Kats from the Baron's petulant punting!

Meanwhile, The Man In Grey attends a sinister meeting in exchange for hostages. Will he and three others persuade these shadowy figures to see reason, or will he need to fade away to avoid getting rubbed out?

Jack Dandy and Lotus Petal use their athletic and acrobatic ability to save victims from Baron von Woof.

The Man In Grey negotiates with Dark Humor, fading out if things get dicey.

This seems to be a perfect situation for Chase.

Bolt Blue can still be redirected if someone else wants to join, I suppose.
