SUMMER
1st Hematite, 110
Work on the water cistern begins by building a line to the river. Workers find a dead dwarf holding an artifact crossbow in said river. We will try to recover it, but it won't be easy in the middle of the stream.
We find another corpse dump in a secluded part of the mountain. We will leave it there, lest it is cursed.
(pic. 21 - Dumed makes a cool mug. Thanks, Dumed.)
10th Hematite, 110
(pic. 22 - Another artifact goes missing)
King's personal furniture is pilfered. I do not know what we can do to prevent this, save for banning foreign visitors. As we examine the current visitors we find a few unusual things.
-There are at least 7 members of foreign royalty, all visiting together to pray at our grand temple. It is a site of pilgrimage for people from all around the world.
-There is a prophet atop the mountain, sitting in a tree. He seems to be stuck there, and refuses to talk to anyone. In fact, three of our guests were chased up the tree by various agitated animals no doubt. They are distracting the giant grasshoppers with their pointless flailing. Good job!
(pic. 23 - Another visitor)
We are once again accosted by a giant burning hairy frog. Well, the hairy frog is a first, I believe, but burning seems common. Before long, our latest guest finds the cave swallowmen invasion party. Some of the swallows live to fly around caverns for another year.
(pic. 24 - It seems like our older invaders protect us from our newer invaders. I cannot complain.)
16th Hematite, 110
Humans traders finally arrive. They will have more bone and stone trinkets than they'll know what to do with, and we will enjoy their cheese.
(pic. 25 - traders arrive)
Our broker pioneers a new way of conducting diplomacy. She attends the trading session topless, wearing nothing but pants and a single sock, while also covered in her own blood.
(pic. 26 - elf diplomacy)
We buy her some clothes.
5th Malachite, Mid Summer, 110
An eagle man finds his way into the still in construction cistern, and knocks off two of the miners working on the walls.
(pic. 27 - tragedy strikes again)
Fortress mourns the loss of two legendary stone diggers, their contribution will be missed.
One more dwarf is found dead in the caverns, likely she was out collecting spider webs when a roaming gang of olm men was passing nearby. I leave securing the caverns to the more enterprising overseers, but for now they are closed.
Kids get into a fight, killing one of their own. Nine remain. They all huddle in the corner, refusing to sleep in their beds or to use tables or cups to drink. I do not understand. At least rock-throw is keeping them somewhat entertained.
It seems like most of our planters have died over the years, and noone was replanting the crops. There is no shortage of meat or trade, so it is no big issue, but harvester duties are re-opened to everyone to prevent the same thing from happening again.
3rd Galena, Late Summer, 110
A Roc! A giant bird, terror of the skies, 68 dwarf kills to it's name before descending atop our museum. To arms! To arms!
(pic. 28 - terror from above)
She makes a grave mistake in descending down into the mountainhomes. In the restrictive tunnels, our steel weapons make short work of the beast, bringing our total casualties from the encounter to 1 peacock and a very wounded wrestler.
19th Galena, Late Summer, 110
Our latest visitor is another pale demon. She beats a human bard to death for an unknown reason, adding a third notch to her human tooth ring. She is adequate at milking. She is a good observer. She is about to leave. We are happy to let her go.
(pic. 29 - bad to the bone)
AUTUMN
3rd Limestone, Early Autumn, 110
Some snatchers get caught in the new cage traps. Honestly, them snatching some children would be doing us a favor. It is not to be. Something needs to be done about our stockpile of grasshoppers, goblin thieves and other miscellaneous animals.
A control room for the water supply is created under the tavern, where some able idle hands should be. Feel free to use the extras.
(pic. 30 - lever hole)
15th Limestone, 110
A forgotten beast! Armok protect us. Oh, wait, no the cave swallows got this one too. The cistern ended up being of unusual shape, as the middle was never properly dug out, and can no longer be removed safely. We will have to store less water, I suppose. A pretty shape is not worth the lives it would take, and there's not much time left. Water is ready to be sent in.
19th Limestone, 110
Mountainhomesfolk are here to trade. We buy out their entire stock, whatever it is, with but a fraction of our bone circlets. Hope the goods are useful.
1st Sandstone, Mid-Autumn, 110
Floodgates are open. The riverbed drains into the underground reservoir we have prepared for it. The legendary crossbow is marked for extraction, hauler walking the parted waters down to it.
(pic. 31 - the now mostly dry riverbed)
21st Sandstone, Mid-Autumn, 110
Two more forgotten beasts show up. One exudes deadly dust, and so can stay on the other side of the farming cavern layer. Another is just a regular gigantic blob of ash. It annoys the cavefish tree party for a bit before hanging out near a closed door into the fort. Will need to keep an eye out on this one.
Well in the hospital is full. The water is still muddy however. Damn it. I am a failure.
I could fix none of the fort's problems, and it's population is now notably smaller, sitting at 169. I withdraw to my chambers to contemplate what went wrong. We are still besieged by enemies. People are still on edge. The kids are still both depressed and a danger to themselves and others. The hospital well is still full of contaminants. People refuse to clean out the bodies laying everywhere. Random things are forbidden to be moved in unexpected places. Maybe it is time for a new overseer. Fingers crossed, nothing bad happens for the rest of the year, so that I may move on.
15th Timber, Late Autumn, 110
Nobody's hauling anymore, so I'm reverting ot a limited number of planters. Childs have been let out as nobody is giving them alcohol anymore.
19th Timber, Late Autumn, 110
Hauling woes resolved, even the corpse got cleaned up. Childs re-contained.
18th Moonstone, Early Winter, 110
It's time to wrap up the year. Despite a busy start, the end was relatively calm. Here are some of the notable changes.
(pic. 32 - new well, and part of the cistern, as well as the Childs Containment. There is rotting cheese in the Baron's bedroom.)
(pic. 33 - expanded library, with many new tomes from traders)
(pic. 34 - giant birds assault us yet again, claiming 2 lives)
The mood across the board is improved somewhat - only 16 haggard dwarfs, though that might have something to do with the smaller population. The rest of things seems stable. Many directions to take the fort in, now, but it's up to the next overseer. FPS started dipping pretty hard, hopefully not because of the water flow, things are slow even with water standing still.
