(SG) Heir to the Throne: An Exile's Story

Heir to the Throne
An Exile's Story

Evil events have overtaken your Northlands Kingdom. Your father, the old king, is dead - assassinated by rivals to the throne. You have escaped, and must collect 500 gold pieces to raise a force to smash them and retake your heritage. Furthermore, the ieper have powerful friends overseas. If you can't return to take them out in ten weeks, their allies will arm themselves and you will lose your Kingdom forever.

To escape the mercenary and royal guard, your loyal body servant Ogab smuggled you into a merchant caravan to the southern border. As the axle squeaks and the cart lurches along the dirt road, you take stock.

Keep everything default but the name which should be Stan. Peek out of the cart and take stock of the surroundings.

You are Stan Arath, firstborn son and Prince (now King) of the Northlands. You have spent your years training the way of the blade, and few men can match you (Combat Skill 8), whilst life in the harsh Northlands has developed your powerful body and magnificent physique (Endurance 9). You are quick in thought and word, but these southlanders may not appreciate your straightforward ways (Wit & Wiles 5).

You shift over to the side of the cart, and peek through the canvas. The dawn light shows the squat buildings of Ogon, one of two towns that sit along the north bank of the Tragoth River.

The wagon creaks to a stop as it approaches the gates. Up ahead you hear the guards speaking and the rustle of cargo they search for contraband. Seizing your moment, you roll out the back and into a ditch. You brush yourself off, loosen your swordbelt and prepare for the first day of your adventure.

Week 1, Day 1

You stand by the gates of Ogon, on the north bank of the Tragoth River. So long as you stay in the Northlands you risk capture by the Mercenary Royal Guard, so you need to find a way across the river.

Thus, you must decide your plan for the day. You can enter Ogon and Enquire about News & Information, Attempt to Hire Followers, or Seek an Audience with the Town Mayor. Whilst there, you will also be able to purchase travel rations, at 1gp per daily ration. Doing anything in town will take the whole day.

Alternatively, you can look for a way across the river and into the Southlands, or head East along the river skirting the edge of Mount Ogon. North and West are too dangerous to consider.

Finally, you're going to have to do something about food. If you choose to spend the night in Ogen, you can buy a meal for 1gp, and also buy a room for 1gp. Possible, but it'll cost all the money you currently have. You can go without food for a day with only minor penalties, and you willing to sleep rough for the night, although there is more safety behind a locked door.

What do you do?

1) Head into Town and...
2) Travel...
3) Ask for more information...

You pass through the gates without issue. Heading into the town proper, you see crowds already beginning to gather in the square. Moving closer, the shouts and smells inform you that it is market day.

You push by the vendors hawking their wares, stopping occasionally to exchange a few words. It turns out the caravan you were part of was destined for this market, and you enjoy the look of non-recognition the merchant gives you as you examine the bolts of fabric you got so familiar with on your journey.

Eventually, an actually useful tidbit reaches you. One caravan was beset by bandits on their way here, and interrogation revealed the location of their (now empty) hideout at the northern end of the Barrier Peaks. The most direct route passes around Mount Ogon, crossing the River Tragoth two days later and then reaching the Peaks two days after that. A much easier (and safer) route crosses the river immediately and follows it along for about 4 days, before heading due South for a day once the Peaks are visible.

If you wish, you still have time to buy food (at 1 Gold piece per day) before nightfall. Once you're out of town you can try to hunt for food (although Mt Ogon is no place for that).

Finally, you must decide if you to buy a room for the night (costing 1gp).

What are your plans for this evening?

1) Buy food and a room (spend 2gp)
2) Save the money (Go hungry and sleep rough)
3) Something else?

Buy food, but sleep rough. We'll have to get used to camping anyway.

3 - Pretending to browse, strike up conversation with various people who appear to be well off. Chat about the fall of your father's dynasty, and without revealing yourself see if we can find someone who might be sympathetic to our cause.

If we find somebody with money to spare who seems trustworthy, we might be able to talk them into buying us some rations and hunting/camping tools. Perhaps even a horse.

You continue to move around the market, exchanging vague words about the current state of the Northlands. Most responses are guarded, likely because of the "Royal" guard that you've seen patrolling the town. However, you do discover that Kollin Goern, one of the previous mayors of Ogon (and a dependable ally of your late father) still serves as an alderman.

You make your way to her residence, and convince a house servant to let you in by the side door. As you wait in a side room you spot a map of the region on one wall, it being much better than anything you recall, you commit it to memory.

Spoiler: Map of the Southlands (click to show/hide)

Not long after, the servant returns, holding the door open for a woman with long grey hair and a pronounced limp. Recognising the stature and bearing of you received from your father, Alderman Goern welcomes you. As you both talk, another servant brings food. The day draws late, and soon it is well into the evening. The Alderman has little of the Wealth or Power you need to recover your Kingdom, but she offers what she can. A purse of 25 gold pieces, a week of rations and most importantly, a Letter of Recommendation addressed to Baron Huldra, of Huldra Castle. Finally, you are promised a horse to help you on your journey and a bed for the night.

A third servant guides you to your room, and you ready yourself for sleep.

Week 1, Day 2

When you awake, it is still dark, and a figure looms beside you, lit by a lantern. Before you can bury your knife into this assassin, the servant warn you that you must leave now, for the Royal Guard has been alerted to your presence. As if to confirm this, there is a loud crash downstairs followed by shouting and the ring of metal.

You gather your things. You have to leave. You may be a strong fighter but you are but one man. At least you have the Letter and the purse, but unless you take the time to search for the kitchen or the stable, you will have neither food nor a horse when you leave. What do you do?
