Halflight Lance Projector
The Halflight is the embodiment of an individuals gut reaction and instincts overtaking their better judgement and decision-making processes.

It is a shoulder-fired break-action rifle with a one-inch bore firing impact-fuse ammunition.  Testers describe the use of the weapon akin to being struck by lightning - there's an enormous flash and boom, and you may very well find yourself on your back in serious pain.  The rounds exit the barrel with roughly the same force and speed as a run-away freight train...that is to say, not very fast, but very deadly.  The impact fuse relies on the French technology for direct-impact detonation.  A steel hammer on the end of a spindle protrudes from the end of the round and only detonates when hitting a target flat and square; deflections or deaccelerations do not result in detonation.  Moisture or high humidity results in the CP-270 ammunition fuses going bad and reaching prohibitively high rates of failure-to-detonate.  On the other hand, if the round manages to actually hit its target, detonation tends to be a bit over-kill.

The barrel is without rifling and as a result (not to understate things here) the Halflight can be "less-than-accurate".  Luckily, the ball-bearing and explosive composition makes near-misses an acceptable outcome, if the fuse doesn't fail.  The sheer concussive force of firing has been known to stress and weaken the hinge. Although our testers stopped before such a failure could occur, the Halflight's break-action will inevitably fail after a dozen or so rounds have passed through it.  Additionally, there is no extractor for the enormous brass casing, and the brass tends to tightly form-fit the internals and become hard to remove.  An "extractor rod" is provided with the weapon: a broom handle, with which the user can poke the spent round back out.  The Halflight does not come with sights, and the user must simply aim down the barrel's length.

The Halflight's harpoons receive an upgrade!  The fuses on the harpoons now require firing in addition to a sudden change in inertia in order to explode.  The round will still bounce and "blind" the fuses at oblique angles, but around 45 degrees or less the fuse will reliably detonate the barbed charge.  The improved charges require a minor increase in technical expertise and parts, and the cost is eaten by the Halflight.

The Vaux and Leander Manufacturing’s VL M18 (not to be confused with the ’18 or the G18 or the other M18) is a ten-round straight-pull bolt action rifle for standard infantry use.  In order to fit a ten round internal magazine, it extends vertically through the bottom of the rifle next to the trigger guard.  The magazine is prone to mis-alignment, resulting in an internal jam if dropped or jostled.

The M18 uses a straight-pull action.  This means the user does not need to lift the bolt or lock it back down, simplifying the action and increasing firing speed.  The M18’s straight pull action does leave a little to be desired, however – the user must be certain the action is all the way forward before firing or the rifle may experience an out-of-battery fire.  In this case, the rifle can be damaged or even wound the user, and the stiff nature of the M18’s bolt makes it difficult to be certain it’s fully forward without visually checking.  The accuracy of the M18 is sub-par, though the reason is as-of-yet unclear.  Though it won’t be winning any sharp-shooting awards, the VL M18 can reliably hit a man-sized target at up to 300m or so.  The rifle can be field stripped with some difficulty, as the straight-pull bolt is reluctant to leave its housing and testers often resort to using leverage to pull it free.

Gunsmith engineers adjust tolerances on the straight-pull bolt of the M18 (no, the other M18).  The bolt slides much more smoothly now and it's obvious once it reaches all the way forward - though it is still possible to fire out-of-battery if the bolt isn't seated all the way forward for some reason.  The bolt can be removed without the use of leverage now, assuming the user knows what they're doing.

Minor flaws noted in the rifling are likely the cause of the VL M18's poor accuracy - particularly near the muzzle, where the rifling simply...stopped.  The rifling is improved and the barrel is lengthened slightly, giving the weapon accuracy comparable to most major rifles of this era.  The extra attention to performance and material slightly increases the M18's expense.

Despite the rather…unorthodox name, the A1 is a relatively standard large-caliber water-cooled machine gun.  None of the users would describe the box-and-cylinder shape as “elegant”, but it would not be out of place in the trenches of the Great War.  Recoil and muzzle flash are enormous as it fires 15mm rounds, which could place the A1 vaguely in the realm of “autocannon”.  The built-on water tanks and cooling system are absolutely required for use as the gun will quickly seize without them, or worse – begin to cook off.

If one word could be used to describe this weapon, it would be “heavy”.  It’s largely immobile due to the cooling system and size, and can not be used in places where fresh water is not largely available.  Thermal buildup requires lots of water to be cycled through during use.  Impure water (such as sea water or hard water) can cause blockages that take extensive periods of maintenance to clean out of the copper piping.  Accuracy is an afterthought, with most rounds landing “vaguely in the vicinity” of the target.  Range is impressive however, though with recoil, flash, and accuracy trying to hit anything that far is a distant dream.  Maintenance and cleaning is a chore, and many parts can become jammed as the gun cools and fouling works its way inside.  Testers describe the weapon as “vehemently unfriendly” to operate in nearly all aspects, though the stopping power is incredible to see in action.  The A1 is definitely a weapon you’d prefer to see as a bystander, rather than from either end.

The switch from welds to bolts is easy enough.  Slightly more difficult is breaking the weapon down into modular parts and forming the external case to more closely follow the internals - a process which requires additional stamping and tooling.  As a result the Holocaust now looks much more appealing to potential customers and can be more easily serviced.

The muzzle is lengthened and some simple ladder sights (purchased whole-sale and bolted to the water jacket) are added.  The A3 gets a hefty increase in range, accuracy, visibility, and weight.  It's still not a marksman weapon, but it can reliably get rounds in the same zipcode as the target now.  The increase in material increases price slightly.

Cancer Adreptus
Chambered in 8.5x20mm, the Cancer Adreptus is a toggle-lock handgun with a very pretty finish.  Unlike the Luger (a particularly infamous toggle-lock handgun), the toggle is below the barrel in order to reduce recoil.  The toggle and most all moving parts are contained within a rounded shroud for protection, which gives the gun a bulky shape.  When fired, the barrel slides back in the gun, breaking the toggle-lock to eject the shell.  A spring closes the toggle, feeding a fresh bullet into the barrel.

Simply put, maintenance and cleaning is a nightmare.  The shroud must be removed before the gun can be disassembled, and the internal mechanisms were not designed with maintenance in mind.  Feeding jams are relatively common, and both the magazine release and safety are described as “sticky” by testers.  The Cancer Adreptus also does not hold up to damage very well, as a drop can cause the toggle to come out of alignment.  Furthermore, though the covered toggle keeps it away from stray fingers, it also means it cannot be directly cocked and relies on the user pushing on a tab in the ejection port.

Recoil is surprisingly low, but the accuracy is not particularly impressive for a handgun.  The gun is, however, very pretty with its nickel plating, though the extra work to do so increases manufacturing cost.  Rimless cased ammo with bottlenecking allows the bullets to feed smoothly (when all other parts are operating correctly), but further increases cost a small amount.

After some further testing, it is revealed that the majority of jams occur from a hard edge in the magazine feed lip.  This is smoothed over, and as a result the Cancer Adreptus B does not feature "mystery jams" any longer.

The "stickiness" of some of the controls are addressed.  The safety is converted to a lever which can be pushed up or down with the users thumb: up for safe, down for fire.  The magazine release button now requires a deeper push, increasing the mechanical advantage.  It now has a satisfying "click" when fully depressed.

TM-18-1A "Buzzard"
A heavy (though smallest caliber submitted this turn) machinegun chambered in 13.5mm, the Korsgaard “Buzzard” is a water-cooled, double-barrel, high ROF weapon.

The Buzzard’s barrels operate on a duplex system, meaning that the operation of one charges the other.  Though each barrel can only manage 750 rounds per minute, together they have a combined rate of fire at around 1500 rpm.  Two belts are required to feed the Buzzard, with shells being ejected below the weapon after firing.

The high rate of fire comes with some trade-offs, however.  Two operating barrels means twice the rate of failure and double the machining required.  The vibrations coming off the weapon can literally shake parts lose, and despite being mounted to a carriage it’s not uncommon for the gun to jitter side to side during use.  The water cooling system, carriage requirement, twin belts, and shaking issues mean the gun can not be used outside of emplacements.  The water system also leaks frequently as cavitation stress can work apart weld seams.  There is also a mysterious issue where the duplex system will occasionally fail to charge the next barrel, though preliminary analysis has yet to come up with an explanation as to why.  The barrels will also quickly wear out after extended use, and the finicky water cooling makes replacement a laborious chore.  It can certainly take down airplanes, and if it can’t punch through a tanks armor then it will certainly deafen the crew inside.

An analysis of the weapon would suggest that the rate of fire combined with the alternating forces provided by each weapon is the main culprit for the destructive vibrations.  Rapidly alternating torque (in addition to the existing standard forces caused by recoil) causes stress fatigue in the affected components - like bending a paperclip back and forth until it breaks.  There's not really any way to "rebalance the weight of the components" to fix this, but we do make the worst offenders for fatigue failures thicker and heavier.  This should keep steel components from breaking, but it doesn't affect the water jacket's solder welds or the actual vibrations themselves.

   The NOPE Repeater M20 is a ~5kg repeating carbine chambered for the custom 7.65x40mm NOPE "Light Rifle" round, designed to fire a 12.5g projectiles at velocities of 600m/s.
   The Repeater itself is approximately 1m in length with a 500mm barrel, loaded via 5 or 15-round detachable box magazine(although the 5-round option are not quite able to be removed in combat), capible of being reloaded through the breach via stripper clips.
   The M20 is a little on the heavier side with lots of metal components, long barrel, and fairly wide housing.  A heat shield around the barrel prevents the user from obtaining accidental burns, and a bayonet lug for a sword enables close-quarters combat.  The lever-delay action is fairly atypical; the bolt and bolt carriage are linked via lever, resulting in an increased amount of force required to open the breech after firing, thus keeping the cartridge seated until the propellant is finished burning.  After significant fouling, the bolt can become stuck and require manual cycling, but this requires negligence on the users part. High-level maintenance operates on the “don’t worry about it” principle, in which the gun (or at least the portions of it) is expected to be handed over to the armory for refurbishing and detail cleaning, while basic cleaning operations ae done at the individual weapon.  The weapon is relatively low-power compared to existing rifles.  The M18 does fire quickly however, but shells are ejected upwards through the user’s sightlines.  To this end the flip-up sights are off-set to the side of the gun, further decreasing accuracy.
   Testers report that the NOPE M18 is quite enjoyable to fire – smaller powder load and a heavier frame means recoil is not a significant issue.
   The 5-round magazine does not stick out quite far enough to be manipulated, while the magazines in general are a little loose and can cause jams if used as a hand hold. The springs also wear out if kept loaded, which can also cause jams.

The first radio-broadcasted baseball game occurs in the USA - the Pirates defeated the Phillies 8-5.  A massive labor uprising occurs in West Virginia.  Hyperinflation (no, the other kind) is rampant in Germany, and martial law is declared following the assassination of their Financial Minister.  Gucci has been founded in France, and will soon produce some of the most awful over-priced fashion merchandise the world has ever seen.  A number of shady individuals quietly draw plans in a dark basement somewhere.

Contract: Parvus Milita Forces #8 ($335, Spring 1924)

Weapon:VL M18 A2
Pitch:the VL M18 A2 is based on simple and proven designs that does not try anything fancy or complicated. Accurate and one of the easiest guns to maintain currently available in the market.

The VL M18 A2 wins the bid for the Parvus Militia Forces.  The committee is pleased with the rifle - it has a large magazine size, fires rapidly, and is on par with some of the rifles their neighbors are currently using.  They are concerned with the difficulty in cleaning and maintaining, however - militia aren't well-known for their high standards, and the M18 A2 is notoriously difficult to maintain.  Additionally, negligent militia could easily cause an out-of-battery fire if the bolt isn't seated forward fully, but this problem has certainly been alleviated since the A1 variant.  They'd prefer a safer rifle, sure, but they'll happily take whatever they can get.



Contract: Socialas Workers Council #9 ($275, Winter 1923)

Weapon:VL M18 A2
Pitch: The VL M18 A2 (not to be confused with the other M18) is just the rifle the council is looking for as it meets the requirement for an accurate and precise rifle. While it is not a semi-auto it uses a larger caliber compared to those, where you would need 2~3 shots from one of the semi-autos to put a man down you will only need one well aimed shot with the VL M18 A2 to do the same.

Two for two, Vaux and Leander Manufacturing wins the Socialas Workers Council #9 bid with the same VL M18 A2 rifle.  With the recent tweak to precision giving the weapon the accuracy it needs, it's a decent weapon for a modern war.  It's a shame the weapon isn't semi-auto, but the larger caliber is exactly what they're looking for.


Ditissimus Security Council #10 ($180, Spring 1923)

Bid: Ditissimus Security Circle #10
Weapon: Cancer Adreptus C
The Cancer Adreptus is a state-of-the-art modern pistol. You will find it easy to shoot and plenty powerful for civilian use. Magazine-fed pistols are the way of the future, and will allow the user to expend rounds in a prolonged fight far faster than an older revolver-style weapon. Our toggle-locking delayed blowback is the most advanced action on the market, and will definitely remain the modern standard, unlike simpler and cheaper designs, which will be forgotten because they are inferior.

Winning by default, Cancer Felicitus wins Ditissimus Security Council's bid for a new handgun.  It's magazine-fed, and the round is big enough to reliably drop a target at thirty paces.  They wanted modern, and the Cancer Adreptus C gives it to them. 


Unknown Buyer #11 ($100, Spring 1922)

Weapon: Halflight V:CE
Pitch: Years of design and improvement have made the Halflight V:CE the most accurate, reliable, and rugged 1 caliber explosive harpoon rifle on the market. Your 'parasite' ridden 'whales' will be swiftly and efficiently put out of their misery, allowing for the formation of a healthier 'ecosystem' that favors the 'right' kind of 'bloated mammal'. Only small issue we have is that the serial number stamps keep falling off, so you might have to write your numbers in with a pencil or something until we get that sorted out - hopefully it's no issue.

A man in a dark suit and a wide-brim hat hefts the gun, checks the action, then shoulders it.  A plywood cut-out of a car promptly vanishes into a cloud of splinters.  He nods, sets the gun down, and places the order.  Ursus Brachi wins the contract.

Singula is a small, wealthy country located adjacent to Mariti.  They piggyback largely off Mariti's wealth by providing transportation for goods once they've left port, but the two countries were once united prior to the Great War.  The Arms Club is a group of weapon aficionado looking for an exotic firearm to present as gifts to attendees at their annual "Gun Gala".  The weapon needs to be unusual in some way.  That's it.  Wow them.

The armory is looking to acquire more ammunition for their Parvus Preserver '18 rifles.  They need ten shipments of 7.92mm, the sooner the better.

Ever looking to upgrade their police forces, Imperiosa has put out a contract for a heavy machinegun with which they will definitely load with rubber bullets and use specifically and only to put down riots, totally.  They're not particularly worried about many of the details, but they want the weapon to be both portable and capable of suppressing large swaths of cover for long periods of time.  They are willing to pay well for this "police tool", apparently.
