honestly yeah. Australia's western deserts might be an apt analogy to this hellish desert.

I'm curious if Grognak will encounter goblin settlements along this river, or if it is instead one of the many untouched feeder-streams that cascade towards the inner sea.

The World Of Bones - Succession World - When Ducks Attack

Grognak started on the floor of the first floor.  He ran out of logs, and daylight, before finishing and decided to sleep on the half finished wooden floor under the stars.

He woke up, of course, late night with a grumbling tummy and a dry throat.  So he ate some turtle meat and drank from one of his skins.  Not wishing to wander towards the lake at night.  No telling what lived in it or hunted the shores at night.

Then he went back to sleep.

Then next morning he woke up to find two ducks nearby.  Staring at him and his animals.  He went to chop down a saguaro and then had breakfast.

He finished the floor and started on the walls.

Of course he ran out of logs and went searching for saguaro.  He noticed one nearby by spotting its branches.

He cut it down and then had another meal.

On the way to the lake to refill his skins he found , and cut down, another saguaro.

And then he noticed another.  And it cut that down too.

While this was happening a duck attacked the yak.

Then he went back to the cabin to finish the walls and made a up/down stairway.

Then he ate a late dinner, though he had to make a fire melt the ice in his skins, and went to sleep in the unfinished cabin.

Of course he woke up before morning.  Stupid tummy.  Growling.

So he had a early breakfast and went back to sleep.  Funny enough, while in the unfinished cabin, the ice in his skins went back to being water.

The next day he tried to use the stairway and it didn’t work.  So he replaced it with a ramp.

But somehow the log he received from breaking down the stairs was used on the roof.  Which, without the ramp, he had no access to.  He blamed the dogs.

He needed sleep and food.  So he had a late dinner and went to sleep in the, mostly, roofed cabin.

Of course in the middle of the night he had to drink and eat.  And when he woke up he had to have another drink.  Seems all the work was making him extra-thirsty.

He searched and found another saguaro and cut it down.

He found and cut down another.  At this point he stopped for a snack and then went back to the workshop.

The roof was finished with access to it via a ramp.  Grognak decided to put beds in the first floor and put tables and chairs on the roof to make a nice place to sit, rest, and maybe have a meal.

He had another meal and went searching for more saguaros.  By sunset he found and cut one down.

He made another bed, a chest, two tables, and two chairs.  He placed the chairs and tables on the roof and the bed in the first floor.  Funny enough the chest didn’t seem to fit any place.  How weird.

He went to sleep in the first bed.

He woke up during the night and ate a meal.  And when morning came he ate breakfast.

He dropped the chest next to one of the beds and checked out the roof.

It was good.  He named it the House of Tours.

He then moved on.  Once again heading south with his animals.  Before the ducks attacked the yak again.

But he noticed an issue when he left the lake region.

The World Of Bones - Succession World - Night Attack

So, he had a choice.  Grognak could follow the river back north, OR head south, OR head eastwards.  The west was blocked by the mountains.

Grognak flipped a dog  East it was!

So, after making sure his waterskins were full, and checking his backpack had about 19 pieces of meat, he went into the wasteland.

And found more mountains which he tried to find a way through.

He stopped to have a meal and then continued south-by-southeast.  He prayed that he would not melt.

But mountains appeared in the east to he stated going south-by-southwest.

Nightfall came.  He had dinner and went to sleep.

Then a jaguar attacked!

After much hacking with the axe, and the animals attacking the big cat, it was finally cut down.  Of course, Grognak butchered it and went back to sleep.

His tummy woke him up.  So he did eat some meat and drank before he checked on the animals.  He found them still alive.  In fact two of the dogs were untouched.  And the yak was missing a ear.  Only the dog named Rane seemed to be somewhat badly wounded.

He went back to sleep.

With sunrise they were once again off.

And found a dead end.

Should he turn back while he still had the food and water to return to the river?  Or try climbing over the mountains to the south?

Author's Note :

Used the four sided die again.  1 was north, 2 and 3 was east, and 4 was south.  Rolled a 3 so headed east.  Kind of fun to use the dice to be honest.  Makes things a tad more random.

Well, Grognak should think on the bright side: at least there were no more ducks attacking yaks.

Luckily they didn't have knives.....

The World Of Bones - Succession World - River Source

Grognak Osp stopped to eat some meat and drink from one of his skins.

Going over the mountains, without knowing how long it could take and what was on the other side, seemed stupid.  Going back to the river and heading north sounded slightly more sound.  And maybe the river went someplace?

Also he was running low on water.

Knowing where the river was he was able to make a more direct heading towards its source.

There refilled his skins, drank from the source of the river, ate some meat, and explored.  The water seemed to come from somewhere underground.  Maybe it emptied into the lake?  Or maybe the river he had followed from the north was an outlet from the lake?

He was growing tried so he picked a spot to start a fire.  He tried something he had never tried before.  He heated the gator meat with the campfire.

Didn’t seem to do much.  He then examined the obsidian rocks he had in his giant weasel leather backpack.  He used them to knap a sharp obsidian rock.  Now if he had a branch…

As he did this the dogs playfully chased around some camels and tried to murder them.

He went to sleep but woke up in the middle of night.  For no reason.  He wasn’t hungry nor his throat dry.  He walked about a tad and then went back to sleep.

He woke up and, this time, eat some meat, and went back to sleep.

He woke up again, drank some water, and went back to sleep.

Finally he woke up with the sun and started following the river.

Soon he entered Umbralesteems, where he stopped to eat and drink from the river, before moving on.  The river he planned to follow north.  And, of course, build wonderful places to stay!

He also washed the big cat’s blood off himself by swimming about the river for a few seconds.

He didn’t get very far before he entered another hamlet.  Named Wavywater.

Did this mean the northern part of the river was dotted with civilized villages?  Would his developing skills be wasted if he continued to follow the river?  And where did IT go?  To another source or a lake or...maybe....an inland ocean?

The World Of Bones - Succession World - Goblins

Before passing through Wavywater Grognak decided to ask the natives a few questions.  Maybe they enjoyed and even already had a tavern or guest house?

It was full of ruined and abandoned houses.  Though he did find a working well.  And where WERE the people?

He walked about and checked a few of the ruins.

He drank from the well after checking the ruins.  Nobody was around.  Maybe he could find the site of government?

There were a few statues.  But they were lifeless things.  One was about a Deity of rain, lightning, and the night.  It was a slate statue of a female dwarf.  Or at least he assumed it was a female dwarf.  Hard to tell with the beards.

He found a shrine.  The Shrine of the Submerged Order.  Which sounded weird.

He  found a die and rolled it.  It seemed like the natural thing to do.  It came up a Tall Cross which meant “Do Not Be Reckless”.

Not bad advice.  But anybody could say that.  Once again Grognak was not impressed.  Even the Gods have no art in their souls!

He followed the roads till he reached the mead hall or city hall.  Or whatever the natives called it.

It was called the Cremated Arm.

He entered and was somewhat surprised.  It was pretty crowded.  Was this the Nobles who ran the empty hamlet?  Or was the populace all here for some reason?

And if his eyes were correct - it was a mixture of goblins and humans.  But who ruled here and who obeyed?

He heard tales of the greenskins.  That they were evil, lived forever, and kidnapped babies.  Or was that kobolds?

So Grognak had to decide to either be friendly or start killing everybody.  And he didn't have time to toss a dog.  He had to decide now!

On the other hand...killing them all would be reckless...right?

Arthur’s Note :

When I was roleplaying Callisto I got the impression the world was in a economic recession.  With only a few spots of wealth here and there.  But I think I found the part of the world which is the slums.

Also I guess we found goblins.

The World Of Bones - Succession World - Ethical Issues

Grognak frowned and decided to use his words first.  Find out who was in charge and maybe found out who they traded with.  So on, so forth.

He greeted a human hammerman named Stusto Usmbazxolang.  The reply was….interesting.

He asked about the local ruler and was told the Society of Channels ruled Wavywater.  But Stusto knew nothing else about it.

So Grognak asked about neighors and trading partners.

The answer was there were none.

Grognak snorted.  He then forced himself to ask about troubles and beasts and such.

Funny enough the answer was not about beasts and such.

He asked for more details.

But that wasn’t the only trouble.

Seems due to the different ethics of the different civilizations many of the hamlets disliked each other.

Grognak rolled his eyes and wondered if he could even help all these hamlets get along.

He asked about the building.  Seems it had been built by Sudem Housewet who ruled the Mahogany Council in Wavywater.

Which suggested a change in government had happened sometime in the past.

Grognak decided to chat with another idividuel so picked a nearby goblin.

He started to talk to a goblin axeman of the name Dopod Eslikuja.

He asked the same questions and got some of the same answers.  Until he asked about the troubles and the goblin said he must take his leave.  Like he didn’t want to talk about it.

Grognak was getting tired and asked permission to sleep inside the hall.  But as nobody seemed to be in charge of the hamlet or the hall nobody could give him permission.

He just went into a corner and tried to go to sleep.  If nobody could give him permission then nobody the authority to stop him.

But every time he tried to go to sleep somebody asked him if he needed help.

So in the end he left and found a abandoned house to sleep in.

And while doing so he picked up a book off the floor of hall on his way out.

The book’s title was The Village For The Beginner Practitioner.  It was about Wavywater and, at best, was not very good.

He went to sleep and woke up to find the animals were all in the building.  He had a meal and went back to sleep.  The water in his skins were still liquid.  At least the building protected him, and the animals, from the weather.

When morning came he had breakfast and gave the book to the yak.

Time to move on!

The World Of Bones - Succession World - Going Home

Time to move on it was.  But Grognak had decided he had enough travel under his belt now.  People were strange and his art was wasted on them.

So he went back home.

He was greeted by the first person he ran into.  It was good to be home.

And so he retired from his period of being a artist.

Yeah, it's been down for some time now. There's a post about it with an explanation (in case you've missed it):

Hopefully it'll be up in a couple days.

Trying to bring art and culture to such devastated lands is probably a greater feat than making it safe

True.  Grognak was a human well before his time.

now imagine this learn-ed Yak studiously interpreting the strange symbols before it - what subjects would the first literate Yak write about?

what subjects would the first literate Yak write about?

Possibly a comparison of the taste of mosses and lichen and how they differ from grasses and sedges.

And maybe some complaining about the rut.

I checked the legends.  Both Grognak and the yak are credited for stealing the book.
