Damn the fort must be in one hot area for that much water to dry up that fast.
Remember, this is the same world that tried to melt Callisto!     I think I may have made it a tad too strange and weird.

Almost forgot about that, guess we're luck it's only the water evaporating and not our dwarves.

another few years flitted by as the dwarves scrambled to complete the regal suite.

mineshafts were dug into the aquiferous mudstone as the dwarves hunted for gold.

The sound of trickling water filled the staircase as the porous stone began to leak. A drain was constructed at the bottom from grates.

A sudden encounter with a roaming draltha turned deadly as one of the exterminators was flung into an exposed pool of magma, intended to fuel another set of furnaces. The stench of fried dwarf filled the lower levels for weeks.

The surf proved too forceful for the stonework to contain, and a second wall was built, resulting in a somewhat protected courtyard where dwarves could train, exercise, or simply take a walk.

Above, gem windows overlook the surf:

The moat proved difficult. A second pump was made:

And the inflow throughput was increased:

Flood away, I screamed:

And yet, the same effect. What took three weeks to fill evaporated in a matter of hours. The heat was simply too much.

It was also noted that, the stream ran dry during pumping operations:

A forgotten beast appeared, some kind of foul shrew:

Our full squads were assembled at the cavern wood pile:

and work continued on the giant golden rooftop pyramid:

what, you didn't know about the giant golden rooftop pyramid? shame on you! We've only been building it for three years now. endlessly hauling hundred-pound golden blocks from the depths of hell. totally worth it bro

I don't know why, but it always makes me very happy to see dwarves dancing.

I've never seen them dance like that before, I should probably mess around with dances more than I do.

A second variety of dance, spotted in the tavern.

An epic artifact:

This crossbow was placed in Olngo's royal villa.

The second layer of bedrooms was finished, and proved more colorful due to the cavern wood beds:

Then,

Goblins.

the ensuing combat as captured by a magical scrying device strapped to the abdomen of a military-grade fluffy wambler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WexB_FkTzP8

So, the dwarves of Riverend held through. Many were wounded and the hospital was expanded.

One dwarf lost their hand:

but their spirit never broke, and they were later seen leading sparring demonstrations, like nothing had happened:

=======================

The moat shenanigans continued. A second, small holding pool was dug, meant to accentuate the existing design and also provide a staging area for flooding the larger moat.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyways, it also failed. Dissapointingly. It was here the moat project was abandoned, and the fields were left to fallow. Baby toes sprung up en masse once the mud dried.

Adamantine was discovered, accessible and in large quantity.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Months later, we had produced the first set of royal adamantine armor.

==============================

Maybe this would convince King Olngo to finally show up. His villa sat, complete, for years now, with not a peep from him or his entourage.

Flooding the garden pools:

Instead, more gobbos.

The fluffy wambler footage returns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLQH4eUwGJQ

The fighting was not as bad as the first siege, and the legendary fighters won after a lengthy engagement. Of note is the first captain of squad The Spears of Light, Shem, who thought to name his steel spear after the 25th kill. "The Malign Cacti" is the exact sort of name one might expect from a military leader embedded in a faraway desert outpost.

It was after this siege that Olngo's messenger arrived: he had no plans to emigrate to Riverend. He had heard about the failure of the moat, and the constant harassment by foreign goblin invaders, and thought better of visiting. This news was warmly received, since no one really wanted the King hanging around, ordering people about.

The final news of the year was the discovery of the theft of the golden artifact crossbow previously mentioned. Someone, likely a kobold, snuck into the empty villa (where the priceless artifact was being stored) and snuck away without anyone noticing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here, the story of Riverend comes to a close, as the dwarfs returned to the rythym of day-to-day living. Nothing ever came of the thing living in the sea, at least that we know of. Perhaps these dwarfs appeased this watery god with blood and violence.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just over 6 years were spent building Riverend. Total pop was 116 at game end, with ~3.5mill created wealth. Plenty of loot for adventurers if they brave the desert heat and goblin patrols. Is the world a better place? I dunno. some goblins died, adamantine was mined, we killed a few forgotten beasts, and the dwarves spent a majority of the time dancing. .

Nice looking pyramid and villa you got there.

Shame the monarch didn't arrive with their full entourage, though.

Anybody want the next turn?   Otherwise I can try something I have been planning.  Don't know if it will work or not but I can give it a try.

I say, go for it! then sign me up for the next go. I really like the idea of populating this World of Bones with various outposts. such a hostile plane of existence calls for . . . "cleaning."

The World Of Bones - Succession World - Grognak Of Axes

Grognak of Axes, also known as Grognak Osp, had extremely long hair the color of burnt umber and skin of sepia.  His tall body was covered in muscles and his slightly hooked nose was short.  His ears were narrow and his taupe eyes were sunken.  His cheekbones and eyes were both high and his head was somewhat short.

He was a human pump operator who lived in the castle of Minedscraped.  He rarely left the castle and was a worshipper of the Healing of Cradles, the Dwarven God of laws, and he belonged to the Oder of Shields.

He, of course, dreamed of creating a great work of art.

The Castle was controlled by the government of the Washed Council and only a few dozen humans lived there.

It was boring.  Which was why he dreamed of creating a great work of art.  So he decided to do it.  To go off and create a series of masterpieces.

So he gathered his equipment.  He, of course, made sure to get his coins, his iron battle axe, copper buckler, copper mail shirt, and his alpaca wool cloak.  And his two waterskins.  The wasteland could get hot.

And he gathered his animals.  His mount, a bull yak, and his pet doggos. War doggos.

Though the doggos, excited, kept getting in the way of the yak.

Grognak decided to talk to some of the populace before leaving.  To say his goodbyes but also to gather information about the lands outside the walls.

The Peasant, Apo, told him about a army on the march and a missing treasure.  He also petted one of the dogs.   In other words, same old, same old.

Grognak decided to ask about the local trading system of settlements.

Turned out there wasn’t much around the Fort.  It was isolated.  Grognak frowned.  He had known this place was kind of boring.  But to be told that it was also out in the middle of nowhere kind of sucked.

He stepped outside the main gate and flipped one of his dogs.

It ended up pointing south.  South is was!

What would he find?  Food?  Water?  Ice Cream?

===================================

Author’s OCC Note : No dog was flipped.
I rolled a four sided die.  1-N, 2-S, 3-E, 4-W.

ah, yes, the age-old method of dog flipping. much better than the alternative, cat dowsing. . . its why I keep my 4, 6 and 10 sided dice dogs nearby at all times.

A fancy dice box there! A proper way to let fate decide where Grognak will travel.
