The holes don't seem to make any noise.  Staring closely, you can make out a glimpse of metal inside them, little metal bits sticking out of the plastic wrapping.

The disk is a big metal disk, but the parts which touched the cage were covered in plastic, as does the bit around the small funny holes.

You had not noticed, but there is a small switch concealed on the underside.  It's labelled 'on' and 'off'.  Right now it's 'on', but flipping it doesn't seem to do anything, as if it's missing something.  A power source?

Thinking back, you remember that some of the other machines have things in them.  They don't do anything until they're plugged into the wall.  Maybe the same applies to this thing too?

It taps a few times, but you can't understand its responses.  Still, you feel it understood you.  And for some reason you think it's happy to have its electric perch back.

(In general you'll gain abilities as you try to do things.  A 'you can't' isn't usually permanent.)
