"What?"

"Look, the door is opening now.  Research staff is to go to the deck 8 aft escape pods for the duration of the emergency.  Arm one, and if you're jettisoned, follow the instructions on the coldsleep kit."

The connection is closed with a hiss and the door slides open with a loud grumble, revealing another metal hallway.  This hallway has a large glass window leading to a large bay full of plants, a hatch with a green light over it leading to said bay, and further hatches forwards and aft.  The door to the plant room is labelled 'Upper hydroponics bay."

Also, with the door open, you can hear a faint low-pitched rumbling in the hallway.

Instead of going to the escape pods lets go check out the plant room first and see what they taste like.

(12+2)

The door opens automatically as you approach it!  Luxurious!

Inside there are many, many plants.  Many glass bins full of water and plants.  Funny tasting water too, so you just work on the plants.  Several of the glass bins are hooked up to strange machines with lit-up screens and writing.  Some have their own screens and writing on them too.  But you're too busy eating to investigate them.  There's a lot of variety, and some of them are really, really tasty, with regular explosions of flavour.  You pull several entire bins worth of the best of them out onto the ground, so you can eat them more quickly.

..Despite them tasting awesome, for some reason you feel you didn't get all you could out of the plants.  Like you need to do something more to take full advantage of them.  Once again your belly is strained painfully at the large quantity of plantlife you just swallowed.

Digest.

The roiling mess inside your stomach rotates around a few times.  An omniscient observer would note all the effort maintained by the horde of digestive enzymes, helpful microorganisms and other.. odder.. cells as being somewhat excessive.  There's a lot of the equivalent of chainsaws and high-powered drills being used on the raw material, wasting much of its potential.  Perhaps a bit more preparation or assistance would be of more use?

Nevertheless, you remain too full to move quickly or fly, as your body continues to process the huge pile of plant matter.

Sounds like its time for more digestion.

*burble

You allow the chainsaws to go to work again, ignoring their call for assistance.  You'll just digest your way through the raw, unprocessed greens, like you always have for paper.  The burbling of your stomach mixes with the soft bubbling of water and the faint sounds of machinery.

You can hear the alarm in here too.  It's quieter, but still present.  You make out a few more things while lying on the floor.

There's a hatch leading to a lower level.  There are also a few big screens down near the end of the hall that don't seem to be related to the many tanks of plant life.

Use extremely acidic stomach acid to eat the hatch.

Eat an actual chainsaw to help out in there.

Do we even have a chainsaw that we can eat?  Can we eat metal and plastic?  What about oil?

We can eat anything if we put our mind towards it.

But for right now lets try to open the hatch before we try to vomit acid on it.

Can I eat X

Well, anything small enough to fit down your gullet you can swallow.

As for what you can eat, it's basically anything that tastes good.  Meat, yes.  Most kinds of plant matter, yes.  Paper, some kinds of cloth, also yes.  Wood, yes.  Metal, oil, no.  Something in your head says 'for now', but eh.

Vomit on the hatch

As a bird, you can basically vomit on demand.  As for if it works, however..

(8-2)

I'm afraid not.  You must have ate too much recently to have good acid left.  The hatch is mostly just wet now.  And a bit sticky.

..and unlocked.  You open it up easily.  Whoops.

Nope, no chainsaw hanging around.  There are a few small tools for cutting plants, but nothing like that.

Anyway..

Down the hatch is another room full of large tanks of liquids and a mess of electrically-operated valved.  There's probably some water, but others have different labels on them.  There are a few screens around and a bunch of pumps.  There are also a couple of empty glass tanks and a few bags full of seeds.

Let’s see if we can read those labels.  Also see what the screens have on them while we’re at it.
