I've only just now realised the game doesn't have a dominions-style option to set oneself to AI once things turn sour (does it??). I'm... not sure how we are to proceed once one or two players are out of the game.

You can call the Secretary and resign your post, not sure what happens to the remnants of your nation at that point.

Surely you're exaggerating? Shouldn't a strategic relocation of troops be able to stop the barbarians ante portas? Emergency unit recruitment?
At worst, it should be possible to reclaim the city, with merely some highly unwelcome - but not game breaking - damage. No?

I think I am getting some, though honestly very little.

I'm not sure I've gotten any since the patches. I made contact with 5 villages last turn (mostly based on unifying with that zone) and there was no treasure. Nor was there any from any of my probing of alien lands. Or some shenanigans on my opposite border out of your direct line of sight. It's weird, my memory of that was that villages always gave something.

I warned you that I was not a great player. We'll see how long it takes them to finish me, since I'm not exactly throwing in the towel. but I am caught between a rock and a hard place and the rock just grew legs and started inching towards me

You have to own the village the turn after in order to get the goodies. But I haven't played since the latest patch.

I've had terrible luck getting anything this game, though it had happened at least once.

Like, so far I probably got <10 machines and maybe 500 credits... gold pieces... money? (I don't know what the currency is here) A few high-tech items too. Pretty sure a few times I got nothing.
I figured the dearth of goodies has something to do with the planet being generated tech-poor, or something. There's very few ruins too, so maybe that's related.

Yeah my one find was like 500 oil. Would have loved to find some machines or credits in the first 10 turns.

I'll say right now I probably couldn't have conquered the neighbor I did - certainly not on turn 6 or 7 - if not for the Gladius I found. Still lost 4-6k troops in the process, but w/o the 4x/round gauss attacks that came with that I don't think the city would have broken w/o more tanks and/or highly destructive artillery bombardment.
