Evil Within is definitely worth playing.

Good to hear it. The sequel is one of two games this week.

The other game is Tandem: a Tale of Shadows. It's a puzzle platformer where you control a little girl and her teddy bear trying to solve a magician's disappearance.

Wasn't there a second game announced alongside Turnip Boy for this week? Where did it go, am I imagining things?

You are correct. There was previously F.I.S.T forged in shadow torch (they really had to think for a while to get the forth name for their backronyme there huh?) they have previously given away fist, I wonder why it was removed last minute.

Shame, fist is a quite okay game. Turnip boy is fine too, but is a pretty short experience.

Yeah, I've heard Turnip Boy has some interesting ideas, teaches you how to use them, and then never uses them again. Also, it's a zelda-like game that requires Windows 10 to handle the very advanced graphics.

This week's game is Golden Light.

The official description is
Quote
Eat weapons, be scared and question your own mind in this Survival-Horror FPS Prop Hunt Roguelike about meat. Walls are watching you!

I can't tell if it's going to be great or terrible, but you should watch the video. It's supposed to be a weird comedy horror game.

I've got no insight into either of the free games offered this week, but since no one else has posted anything yet...

There's two games being offered: Surviving the Aftermath and Earthlock.

Aftermath appears to be a post-apocalyptic colony sim, while Earthlock seems to be an RPG - in the JRPG tradition, if I'm interpreting the trailer and text description correctly.

So far from my playthrough Surviving the Aftermath is a decent city builder.
Above your city map there's a Frostpunk-like overmap in which you can send "specialists" to explore , loot and scavenge location for items or research points or fight bandit camps or move the background storyline forward.

Similarly to Surviving Mars you sometime get disasters coming , on my town i got some radioactive cloud, an attack of mutated spider/tick-like creature and currently a freezing wintery wave a la Frostpunk (though nowhere near the difficulty of that game)

There are events too, like some survivors, merchants etc... coming to visit and trading, children grow up into adult to join your workforce, there are lot of researches to do to improve productivity, buildings or unlock new buildings...
you get people getting hurt, irradiated , diseased, mutated, hungry, dehydrated etc..  due to various circumstances but various buildings can help or heal them to not dying, though dying from old age is a thing in that game.

Now maybe it's because for my first learning playthrough i set all the difficulty settings to low but so far it feels a bit too easy to overcome those challenges coming your way (Surviving Mars had that problem even when increasing the difficulty a lot), but it will certainly get better once i'll go to my next playthrough with higher difficulty setup, but that's nowhere close to Frostpunk for the survival challenge difficulty so far.

There's some good potential for people that like this genre, hopefully it will not be a wasted potential in the end

Thank you for the back-up. Too tired yesterday.

I played this a bit previously and on 'normal' difficulty settings I found the challenges were generally easy to deal with too.  Things could get a bit dicey at the very start, but once you were up and running it was all pretty trivial.  I also found that as the game went on it started to feel kind of pointless. I could research new technology or go explore this far away heavily defended resource thing, and there was still loads of the map I hadn't expanded into, but I didn't really have any reason to do any of that - the technology I had was doing the job just fine, I had enough resources, and I'd just be expanding for the sake of expanding.  That may all just be my personality/preferences though; I find the same thing happens with most sandbox builder games.  I should probably also note that I had fun up until that point, so it was still worth the £18 or so I paid it for.

It feels like the same problem as Surviving Mars, it's not challenging.
But maybe i played Frostpunk too many times so when i see "survival" as an element in a city builder, i expect much more challenge.

I restarted a game with upping each difficulty settings 2 notches up and set the ressource slightly less abundant.
And while i noticed a very slight increase in bad event frequency (mostly meteors) , it's still too easy to deal with everything :
by example all those troubles that can threaten each individual survivors : irradiation/diseases/pandemics/wounds with 3 medical tents i noticed i never had any problems anymore, everyone is perfectly ok in no time.

those meteors... everytime they fell it was right on my group of weak small tents, said like that it seems catastrophic.
But in the game those weak small tent will take only minor damage that will be repaired easily especially as materials aren't hard at all to come with.

Maybe near end game things get harder but i'm again at the +/- 20th day in the middle of an icy winter and there's no problem dealing with everything.

So on my current Surviving the Aftermath run, i reached a "i don't care anymore" status.

+/- 65th day
a day take a long time at max speed now , probably not helped by the amount of people in my now large colony
As i was following the story quests, i reached a point in which i built a doomsday bunker, then followed up by the quest to free some other colony on the world map from bandits camps besieging them.
All in order to get more info on how to actually make the bunker work because apparently you build a doomsday bunker but have no idea on how to operate it for "reasons"

All with various events (meteor, bandit/mutated critters attack, etc...) that are too easy to deal with in your colony, making it not really eventfull at all but mostly boring as your colony is probably already self-sufficient since at most day 30

So how to proceed : you need to build various type of engineer outposts (building that got just unlocked with that quest so you can't build ahead of it) on specific locations in the world map.
Each built outpost seems to give +0.70% by day of score progression in one of the 4 category that are needed to operate the doomsday bunker.
Sounds like it will take a ridiculous amount of time that even max speed will not save from being utterly boring as nothing is difficult anymore at that point.

But that's not all :
To build an outpost, you basically sacrifice a "specialist"
1 new specialist is only are available to hire every 4 days
You need to have enough money to hire one, if at the 4th day the specialist ask more money than you currently have, he obviously leave and reset the 4 days waiting time !

So unless i am overlooking something, this looks like it will take more than a ridiculous amount of time to wait at max speed without any challenge in-between (as so far every events are too easy to deal with), much more than i am willing to waste.

Oh well, it was fun for a few hours, especially for free, but really isn't up in term of interest to my favorites city builders at all unfortunately.

That sounds remarkably tedious and narrow. Like they figured out building stuff and farming and then just kinda stapled some objectives on the side.

We've got 2 games again this week.
Jitsu Squad - An indie co-op fighter. It's supposed to be like Marvel vs Capcom with 4 characters you don't know or Streets of Rage. Plays single player as well. Works with Windows 7.

Mighty Fight Federation - It looks like Dead or Alive starring game characters you don't know or care about, like Yooka & Laylee or Hyerion? There's a paid DLC for the characters from the new River City Ransom, and you won't recognize them without a label.

I can't say I care about any of the characters, but some of the reviews floating about invoke the name of Power Stone, a great old Dreamcast game that means I'll have to at least give this one the ol' college try.

Starting from december 20 , epic will give away 1 new free "mystery" game by day (note that you'll have only 1 day to claim each of them, so make sure to check if one get your interest) up to a total of 17 free games during their whole Christmas and end of the year sales period.
