- make sure Fallout 3 is fully updated, as some time after i managed to download the game (it's a lot more huge than it should as it stupidly download the game in every language, basically like if you downloaded the game 5 times ... ) there was an update available for some reason.
- Download Fallout Anniversary Patcher
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/24913Extract all the files into the version of the game that correspond to the one you play, by example if you're playing the english version it will be in
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
Now in your ...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\ double click on Patcher.exe and wait until it's finished.
- Download FOSE (Fallout Script Extender)
https://fose.silverlock.org/beta/fose_v1_3_beta2.7zExtract all the files into the version of the game that correspond to the one you play, by example if you're playing the english version it will be in
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
note : this is for modders but it is required by 99% of the mods and plugins you'll want or need.
- Download Command Extender (it's a FOSE plugin)
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/23682Extract the "fose" folder and move that folder to
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\Data\
note: this along bringing some new modding functions also fixes a bunch of engine bugs.
- Download Lstewieal's Tweaks (it's a FOSE plugin)
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/23561Extract the "fose" , "menus" , "textures" folders and move those folders to
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\Data\
note : along with a lot of optional tweaks and quality of life addition, this plugin also contain "Tick Fix" and "Memory Fix" built-in , those that are often recommended to download but don't download them as they would then run twice uselessly then.
- Download OGG Vorbis Library
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/61265(yeah that's a New Vegas page, but this OGG Vorbis Library is also for Fallout 3)
Extract the 2 dll files and move them to where your Fallout3.exe is (note that it will replace the original 2 similar files):
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
note : this updated OGG library will fix the various sound memory leaks and stutters of the default OGG library from Fallout 3
- Download Updated Fallout 3 Unofficial Patch
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/19122important: make sure to download the one corresponding to your language, they're listed in the description page
Extract the file, that in english version is in ".fomod" format , but just rename the .fomod extension into .7z to open that .fomod file , and extract all the files and folders to your
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
Now you must get an addon list ordering and manager as there's nothing usefull like that with the game itself, i'll take WryeBash because i have been used to it after Morrowind and Oblivion.
- Download WryeBash
https://github.com/wrye-bash/wrye-bash/releasesSelect the "Standalone Executable" as we don't have a real need to install it just for what we'll need to do with it.
Extract the "Mopy" folder and put it on your desktop.
In that "Mopy" folder, where the "Wrye Bash.exe" can be found, create a new text file.
In that text file type
start WryeBash.exe -o ""
Now between the "" you must put the path to the Fallout3.exe for the language version you're playing, and double all the \ from that path.
By example if your english language Fallout3.exe is in
C:\EpicStoreGames\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
You'll need to have :
start WryeBash.exe -o "C:\\EpicStoreGames\\fallout3\\Fallout 3 GOTY English\\"
Close your text file and save the changes.
Rename the .txt extension of your text file into .bat
Now launch WryeBash by double clocking on your .bat file
We needed to do this because at the moment the latest version of WryBash can't detect the epic store version of Fallout3 by itself, so we need to point that program to it with this .bat
Maybe in the future this will be not needed anymore.
Once at the WryeBash menu, at the "Mods" tab you'll see a list of the DLC and the unofficial patch esm files.
You'll need them to be in this order :
Fallout3.esm
Anchorage.esm
ThePitt.esm
BrokenSteel.esm
PointLookout.esm
Zeta.esm
Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch.esm
And by default they're not really as the epic version files are dated newer than the unofficial patch it will screw things ingame in this state, and that's why we needed a tool like WryeBash, to re-order list correctly
So you can select and move the entries until you meet the correct order.
Once you're done, right click on "Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch.esm" then "File" then "Redate"
This will change the date of creation of the addon to just now, allowing it to be newer than the DLC .esm and not potentially breaking anything.
Now make sure all those entries are selected/ticked.
But do not tick (or untick it) the "Bashed Patch, 0.esp" at the end.
We do not need this one at all for the essential setup we did, but if you install a bunch of mod in the future you may need it to have correct merged leveled lists.
Once you're done having all the mods correctly ordered and all selected, you can close WryeBash.
Launch your game by its shortcut
or later you'll be able to do it directly with the "Fallout3.exe" fom your
...\fallout3\Fallout 3 GOTY English\
(don't use the "fose_loader.exe" yourself as i was required before the Anniversary Patcher to make use of the FOSE functionality, after having used the Anniversary Patcher the game executable will use FOSE by itself)
Then on the main menu, make your settings/keys/etc... then quit.
Go to your
C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Open the file "Fallout3.ini"
look for
bInvalidateOlderFiles=0
change it to
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
quit and save the changes, this was a required action for the unofficial patch to work fully.
You can also use the "Fallout 3 Heap Replacer" if you want for even more performance and stability, i do, read the instructions :
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/24470Now enjoy the game.
