~ What to do when things are random ~
« on: July 20, 2022, 09:02:32 am »

We live in random times, and the future's looking moreso. Any tips?

We have a random questions thread of two different sizes
We do not need a third

This isn't even preparation, this is adaptation. Things are random. Things will be random. Court systems, roguelikes, card tables; all chock full of examples of poorly handled randomness.

I come to this forum chiefly for discussion, bruh. All you have to do is open one.

...not really?

Court systems are unfortunately quite non-random.  Judge says you're fucked, then you're fucked. No randomness in that.
If you're referring to the recent US Supreme Court decisions, they are the result of a long term strategy to get Conservatives on the US Supreme Court. Definitely not random.
Roguelikes follow procedures & rules, so while the results are subjected to randomness, it's not like your roguelike will suddenly transform into a dating app.
Card tables...ok why do they keep popping up all over the place? Ok, maybe they're random.

Unusual approach, Euchrejack.

Courts are full of crimes of passion, traffic accidents, and sudden arbitrary rulings that deny a continent the right to abortions. People go to court, because something random happened and they reacted poorly.

Roguelike graveyards are large, because of all the times YOU reacted poorly.

Card tables... I think you see my logic now.

Mmmnope, not seeing your logic.

Supreme court decision is neither sudden nor arbitrary, it's a very deliberate step in a very deliberate conservative strategy. Other courts hinge on precedence and written regulation. People go to court because things happen to them, too, or because people very intentionally break the law with no random thing happening to lead them to that decision.

We've had randomness in games since fuckin' dominoes were recorded in the mid 1200s and in other games long before. Hell, if you want to get into the mathematics of it, it's really difficult to program a truly random algorithm anyways and pseudorandom number generation is used for convenience or because it's good enough.

It's not some Bad Thing that happens to people. It's not new. It's not accelerating. It's hardly even quantifiable outside of a very narrow statistical analysis of a system.

None, always taking the generous view.

I'm not talking about whether it's new, or the only thing in life. I'm talking about dealing with it. I have a fucking perspective, but this is for my own benefit first and foremost. We're not all living the same life. Cut out the badgering when i ask questions, please.

Uh, actually I think None's response was about normal for these forums.
And you're posting questions to a community of people. You should probably expect answers.

Hm, but it appears the question is not "whether these things are random" or "are things more or less random that in the past", but rather "how do we deal with randomness?"

I think the point of both None & myself is that there is less randomness than there appears.  That is part of "dealing with it".

There is also the classic "we can't control the world, only our reactions to it"

As for card tables
