See if I can train my beastie so that I can give it a command to just run around and kill stuff at its discretion while I ride.

Allowing it free reign turns out to be as easy as literally applying free reign. That is to say by holding your reins loosely it goes wherever it wants and does whatever it wants. Trying this under simulated combat proves difficult - as you learned before staying on top of a randomly moving creature moving at its full speed isn't a trivial task. If you try performing this under combat conditions you are likely to have difficulties doing anything but remaining in the saddle, and attempts to do something else in addition to that come with the risk of falling to the ground.

"Escort more than guard, let strangers get close but punish them if they become a problem, if that makes sense. So I still think it's a good idea."

"An attack animal, then? Hardly an uncommon profession for beasts on this world. If you're letting it take its own initiative on when to bite you've got to be careful in tense situations. If they can read the room and know you want some guy dead they'll do their best to make it happen. It can be harder to get them to stop than it is to get them to start."

Attack training follows the same pattern as the other training. A Warrior from the village comes in and dons an incredibly thick flackgrass armor resembling a bomb suit, which clearly offers reasonable protection despite greatly limiting his motion. You held your Raptor on a leash and the Warrior would act aggressive. Once you released the leash, it was supposed to attack the warrior and if it did it would receive a treat. True to its nature it took to the job rather quickly, though following the Chief's warnings it became too overprotective and would once again attack anyone who got close. It took some time to get the right balance where it would only attack hostile-acting humans. At least hopefully that lesson stuck....

Since we seem to still not be done here, I would like to take some extra time making sure the training for this last part was done right. Making a mistake on this would really suck for all involved.

Is it possible to check on the clone-corpse now or do I have to wait until the raptor thing is done?

((You can check it now. Timeline wise the Raptor stuff took months. They’ll probably confidently wrap up around the time you finish the endeavor unless it ends up taking significantly longer than planned.))

Spoiler: OOC (click to show/hide)

"Let us hope this brings us good things."

Go check on the corpse and contact the Governor with the good news so we can split the trophies.

And how would you like to do that? Best way to test would be attacking someone theoretically.

You pet your raptor! While they may not be as pleasant to pet as some softer, fluffier things you don't really notice the difference since you're in a space suit. As a social animal it reacts positively to the affection with a small cooing sound.

The corpse is indeed a corpse. It is certainly a fine beast, you suspect any part of it could be displayed in a wealthy noble's home in some way or another without seeming out of place. A triceratops as large as a peasant's hovel, with wonderful horns and fine skin. As expected there is no obvious sign of death. It is as if it had died of disease or poison rather than being hunted by human hands. While you have no way of knowing having not examined the other creature, you assume it to be identical in size and stature as promised by the Genetor...but there is something off about it. Specifically it is a body that has never been used. Its teeth have not been worn down by constantly chewing, its hide is free if blemishes and scars, its feet uncalloused never having touched the ground. No doubt if one was to examine the creature's innards they would find many things lacking, such as the creature's gastroliths and stomach contents. It is a 'factory new' creature, so to speak. Hopefully your methods are esoteric enough that nobody checks for such oddities at an inopportune time.

"Excellent. Lets hope this manages to calm things down. I appreciate your efforts in the matter Lord-Captain."

++There is, however, bad news along with the good, which means the meeting cannot be held as soon as possible. The corpse looks uncannily 'new', therefore there may be some sort of fixing involved to diminish the disparity.++ he informs the Governor just in case. They just can't have the meeting before that problem is corrected.

"Genetor Hogbin, while this is fine work I fear it looks unnaturally untouched. Not the lack of wounds, I planned on fixing that ourselves; it has to do with the lack of weathering on the parts you'd expect such as teeth, skin and teeth. Is there a way to artificially age its hide and maybe teeth?"

He does remember a smartass pupil at the Schola attempting to make new parchment look aged in order to replace one they'd destroyed. "Would carefully alternating between heat-treating and moisturizing help age the hide without making it brittle? And perhaps repetitive mechanical action to cause at least give some superficial appearance of usage to the teeth?"

Suggest fixes. Pray to the Emperor this is fixed.

fair question, actually. never mind that. I'd been assuming our eldar would want to get in more riding practice since she was having trouble staying mounted. But if she's done, then it's probably time to move on so that we aren't holding people up.

((I was kinda waiting for Egan to post since I'm going to have to find out what to do with 2/3 of the remaining players now that the Raptor thing is basically over >_>))

"I've heard of such temperature manipulating techniques used to simulating the effects of weathering on other material, but I lack the equipment to replicate them in my lab given my specialty. There would be several issues with the method suggested for the teeth. Triceratops have five rows of teeth for a creature of this size. These will wear down at different rates and be replaced by the teeth behind them throughout the animal's life. You would thusly expect uneven weathering as a result. Such mechanical action would also take much time if you're doing it at the pace of a living animal, keeping in mind that such large creatures would spend the majority of the day eating. Quicker methods would leave different marks, though perhaps a skilled enough artisan could replicate the other creature's teeth. I would suppose the easiest way to complete the forgery would be to remove the jaw as part of its fatal wound, yes?"

It was non-rhetorical. Is there anything you want to murder with a raptor?

I'd be up for some recreational-instructional combat. Do the locals have any wars for us to participate in?

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war! But from what you can tell the people of this world seem to be completely united against threats to their planet without any intraplanetary warfare. The traditional spontaneous live fire exercises seem to be non-euphemistic among warriors looking to prove their bravery with no regard to safety standards.

Currently the only enemies of humanity on-world are the Cultist that hiding among the locals - agents of the Ruinous powers that spring up like weeds wherever Chaos influence spreads. Naturally whenever these are discovered they are dealt with with almost excessive prejudice, so you'd have to find a cult before warring it.
