"I believe they might have been left behind in the fiery pursuit of glory and justice!" Rodolfo explained.

Angstorm brought his palm to his face as the door to the meeting room opened.

"The young and naive think they have a choice, but life has a way of waking them up."

: You! Rookies! I want to hear what you've been doing for the whole raid, and I want it so detailed that I can see myself there with you. Before they could answer and dig deeper, the sergeant intervened.

: Captain, they just told me the Bulls seemed to have dug new access points to the underground tunnels, but no sight of the target.

The information seemed to have stunned Logan into silence, or the boisterous equivalent.

: Well shit, that's the first bit of useful fuckin' news I've heard all day. Come to meeting room 1 in 10 minutes, old man, I want to see this new access point on a proper map. Once again, the captain left abruptly before anyone could respond.

: You're getting off easy, I think. For a first day, that's more than enough. As for you- He pointed at Rodolfo. You're part of our squad until someone comes with a missing person report about you. Anything else?

Rykvaard looked at the rest of his squad.

"Nothing that comes to mind, though maybe someone else has something to add."

"My squadmates are missing so that seems appropriate!"

: *sigh* Alright, take a break then. You earned it. Angstrom left them to their devices as their eventful welcome to real guard work came to an end.

~~Chapter 2: Dog Days~~

"The rest of their first week was much calmer, but only because they were too green to be trusted with bigger things.

They would find themselves in such a situation eventually, so why rush it?"

The squad's first day off was also their first payday. Angstrom was counting the coins assigned to the squad (which now included Rodolfo, making individual shares smaller in turn). Their week of work did not involve any tunnel checking, as that was left for more experienced guards, and so far they had been kept in the dark about any results.

: Even with that first day, your first week went well enough I'd say. Here you go. After putting aside money for housing, food, etc. the group was left with some money for other business.

Party gets 3000 gold!

: Have fun. But not too much fun, that doesn't tend to end up well.

Vervain raised an eyebrow (not that anyone could see it) at the way the pay was divided between them. A set amount, reduced by number of guards?
"What a curious system of payment. No wonder you always have trouble with recruitment."
Much of the coins the nun recieved would have to go to the Cathedral; she wasn't an employee of the guards, as such, but a few funds going into her own means wouldn't be missed. She pulled out her cigarette tin and looked inside, seeing the woeful emptiness.
"Well, then, I know where I'm going. It's to the markets with me."
"If any of you feel like embracing God's salvation, feel free to come to the Cathedral, darlings. I can take confessions if you get too wild in your day off."

Rykvaard looked down in thought. Was there anything he needed in the markets? His lance was still pretty solid - a little beat up, but he suspected at the current rate of use it would last at least another 'exciting' patrol or two. He still had two uses of his allotted vulnerary as well, so likely no need to replace that just yet either. Still, it might not be a bad idea to get replacements ahead of time for both. And it might be good to get to know his squadmates better, too, though on the other hand maybe he should take the day off to spend some time with the house leader he shared blood with. Valdemar was still too young to be much of a person but it wouldn't do for him to forget Rykve's face from being away so much.

"...I suppose I ought to at least look at the markets as well. I'll accompany you, Sister."

"Well I would like to accompany both of you. I might need new clothes, my old one's have gotten tears in them and I haven't had the chance to fix them just yet."

Elyna turned towards Vervain, contemplating her offer for a short moment.

"While I am more a student than a disciple of the light perhaps it would not hurt my Soul to accompany you Sister, even if it may only be for the calm atmosphere of the church."

Watson thinks briefly.
"I'll go with you, Sister. I need resupplies, anyway, and I need to touch base with a few people I know."

"What, that's it?" Nicoletta said not quite as quietly as might be tactful as she looked at her share of approximately 428 and 4/7ths gold coins.

"It sounds like everyone's going to the markets. Where else would we even go with gold to spend?" She let it sound rhetorical, though she wouldn't actually know in this part of town.

: Budget for six. Apparently the appearance of a seventh is "not their problem".

The markets were bustling with activity as usual. The civilian shops were where most people gathered around, but the more specialized shops, set out of plain sight in the alleyways leading to the Gran Via, were much quieter.

An armory owned by a grumpy, short, and very bearded man had the widest selection. Any "dwarf" jokes and I'll put ye to my level by choppin' yer legs off.
