I put some thought into the idea of improving our structures earlier, as it struck me as the only clearly natural expansion phase tech with our current tech and resources, but I couldn't actually think of any real benefit with our position as stated. Worse, if we were to take on a semi-nomadic (that is to say, cyclical pattern of settling and moving, as with many savannah communities) pattern of living, it could ultimately be harmful. With that said, if the lake area turns out to be particularly fertile, adapting a semi-nomadic nature may never be necessary, and I suspect this will probably be the case.
But then it's probably best just to get to the lake.
As for tribe name, savannas proper seem to be most common in Africa and, actually, South America (specifically the Cerrado of Brazil). I elected to do research off of indigenous Brazilian peoples; I am admittedly aiming to contrast with the inspiration game again here (which drew inspiration from West Africa's Sahel region), but I think also that most people haven't even heard of these peoples at all so it might be interesting to go with in that respect.
I elected to toy around with Old Tupi (the language used by the large majority of indigenous Brazilian tribes on the coast), and though I haven't found a dictionary presently, I've found a site with a good amount of info:
https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/196064 Accordingly, I'll take the word for water ("y"), note that according to the site, some Tupi tribes called their land "where there will be palm trees" ("pindo-rama", which is "palm tree" ("pindo" plus a future aspect, "rama")), and note that the word for village is "taba", and go for "water where there will be villages", or as far as I can see, "ytabarama".
But I'm going to fuck around with that a bit; attaching us
directly to a language without a dictionary would be difficult, and it also feels like it would be a bit disrespectful to just flagrantly paste a bunch of Old Tupi words all over the thread considering it was an actively suppressed indigenous language, rather than being
inspired by it - mutating "ytabarama" into "Ybatara".
(Also at least one person in the Discord wanted to delay naming until we did something of sufficient note so I'm putting that into the votebox too).
