Close Call

Okay, so my competent archer was sniping some goblins, when a guard broke his leg. Luckily, the guard had sustained some injuries, he also had one broken leg. So, I crawled, with the guard behind me, up onto a cliff. There was a space that was square shaped, and was connected by one tile, the rest were 2 level drops. The guard cornered me, and I was certain to die, but I threw my bow at him, piercing a lung and his heart, and sending him flying off the cliff. Sadly, after a few more goblins entered the little arena, I was mortally wounded and fell off the side. But anyway, I just wanted to remind everyone that if they're stuck, they can always throw something.

Unless they're missing one or more eyes. My last guy was a one-eyed legendary thrower but he couldn't hit a target standing right next to him. Half the time he threw objects in the opposite direction of where he was aiming.

And I was looking forward to having a badass one-eyed warrior too.  :(

You can always be surprised at what throwing does. It's kinda like playing the lottery. Sometimes it can save your life, sometimes it can kick your ass. For example; sometimes, you've got that goblin axelord tearing down the tarmac to rip you a new one and all your shield arm was broken earlier leaving you with just your alligator tail club... thing. You risk it all, throwing the tail at the incoming gobbo and kapow! He goes flying into a volcano and burns to a cripsy golden brown.

Then other times you've got a human child crawling towards you goo goo gaa gaa-ing, so you decide to go all Capt. America and throw your *<steel>* at it. It flies off in some wild tangent and disappears into the fog of war, just before 200 peasants jump you and tear your triple legendary adventurer limb from limb.

I was testing a Power I'd designed once by invading a demon city and seeing how well my character stood up against the citizens.  One of the demons got in a lucky blow and broke my neck.

This did nothing to prevent me from throwing arrows at it, from point blank range, until it died.

I think throwing uses telekinesis; maybe that's part of the reason it's so effective.

I wonder when throwing will get fixed downgraded. I've taken out two ettins by knocking them out with clumps of dirt, and then strangling their throats. Something about having each hand strangling a seperate neck is awesome.

That is the best thing I've ever heard.

I personally don't think that throwing, in and of itself, is overpowered.  Non-siege projectiles are what need to be toned down.  How many adventurers have died out of nowhere because some archer off-screen got a lucky shot?  I mean, stuff like dirt, live worms, vomit, water, etc. shouldn't have the destructive capabilities it does now, that's for sure.  But if you can throw something heavy and sharp (like a spear) accurately, it makes sense for that to do some big damage.  If I throw the head of a bronze colossus, it should do more damage than a small limestone rock.

Anyway, that's enough rambling.

Wait, so you were strangling both two-headed giants... at the same time? Like, you were strangling both of each of their necks with one hand? Sweeeeeet.

If Toady ever does tone down throwing, he'd better put a
[INSANETHROWING:NO] bit in the init files. I love my arrowvomit.

I assume this will come with the nerfing of carp/archery/etc as well...
Which would lead to a better toggle: [RETRO:NO]

Include trunkless dwarf-murderers elephants with glowin' eyes in this 'RETRO'.

I hope we get a way to retain the insane throwing.

Otherwise it's only going to rob us of the sick dementia that we've come to love and expect from this game.

I personally don't think that throwing, in and of itself, is overpowered.  Non-siege projectiles are what need to be toned down.

Throwing doesn't need to be toned down, just made more realistic. Such as myself creating a new character today, and going into a human armour shop. My actions are as follows:

I find the shop.
I pick up the 3000 copper coins in the chest.
I bash the shopkeeper if I'm not a malicious race and then 'give' a few coins back to him Elfen Lied vector style.
His lung, kidney, spleen, heart, and whatnot are pierced.
He either dies or I bash into him a bit more.
I go 'shopping'.
I promptly kill the whole town. (If your smart you don't die from child swarms.)
And I sometimes may get totally pwnt by a kobold. Oh dear. I have to spend a few minutes typing g, a (Repeat 600), then t, c, <enter> (Repeat 600).

And there is the general steal from town, kill all encounter. I don't think ranged should be down toned, because it is hard to train, requires ammunition, and yes, a fast flying steel bolt or arrow will pierce through your armor sometimes, or hit you in an unprotected area and totally maim you. This is not unrealistic. They should only make the throwing do more damage based on material. Yes this means you probably can't main people with high-speed water or blood, but as a legendary thrower you would still be able to pierce someone's brain or bruise them with a coin. Just not total maimage.

I'd like to be able to throw sand or mud at someone to hinder their fighting ability.   In the current version of DF, this is possible.  Albeit in a slightly more gory fashion than normal.
