dwarvish temper tantrums
« on: August 08, 2006, 03:09:00 pm »

First off, i would like to say that i am really  enjoying this, despite some quirks i've found.

I've got my 4th fortress running properly after i accidently gave away all my goods for free on the 1st one and got immediately eaten by bears on the 2nd and 3rd one (on the default "safe" map, no less).

However, my hunter recently got himself into a small tussle with a gorilla and got a wounded left hand, and insists on sitting in the barracks until it heals. Problem is, he seems to be rapidly growing very unhappy, even though he can get up and go get food and  water. At the moment he is not doing anything except throwing tantrums.

Seeing that i only just recently started( still in 1st spring) and only have the 7 dwarves, is there any way i can lift this guy out of the doldrums before he decides to toss himself in the river?

(he is only listed as very unhappy, not melachonic or anything like that)

Hrm, it's a bit hard to help them if they are injured and lazing around in bed -- you could try putting some nice looking furniture next to his hospital bed for him to admire, especially using materials he likes if possible.  The same goes for foods, although that's a bit hard.  They should really comfort each other and sing songs or something...

Maybe health care should also mean that the healer can attempt to keep the injured dwarf mentally stable, in addition to providing healing.

this guy isn't getting any health care, though. he only seems to have gotten his hand nibbled on by a gorilla. He can walk around and get food and water just fine, then immediately returns to bed and resumes pouting.

BTW, about how long is it supposed to take to heal a singular yellow wound, Toady?

A yellow wound is a break (red is a mangle) so it can actually take a looong time.  Brown and light gray heal quite fast.

*mutter*

just went a tad to the north along the river and got half the cave slaughtered by snakemen.

Was just about to put in some farming too.

How are you supposed to survive against 4 or 5 of them hopping from the water when you can't even make a decent weapon yet? I'd only found tin and was sending some men up to mine a newly found brass vien when they were suddenly ambushed and slaugherted.

Traps are good for river attacks.  You also start with a couple axes and can use ASD's bear instructions, but traps are a good bet.  Even a simple stone-fall trap can kill a snakeman.

You make mechanisms for these at the mechanic's workshop, and you need to set up a mechanic in the [v][p][l] view.  Then you place the trap you want.  Weapon traps are more reuseable, but you'll need weapons for those.  Stone-fall traps just use the stone you get from mining.

ehh, yeah, just wasn't expecting to run into enemies so soon.

Was just expecting a single injured thing like from the demo, not a half-dozen maruders from hell.

I'll see if i can get some traps up, and hope they don't attack again until spring, when i might get  a couple of migrants.

Snakemen are a fairly recent addition and harder than some of the other little green men you find in the cave.  They probably merit a "difficulty 2" setting, so they don't attack in large packs immediately.  It'll be more like the snakeman from Dreamscape then.

Snakemen are still no match for an unarmed, unskilled dwarf one on one usually.  In a pack, it's a different story, but they're still beatable with your starting dwarves.

a small group of them managed to kill 11 out of 18 dwarves while swarming all over the fort. The dwarves didn't have time to group up to do anything.

Keep your obsidian!!

You can make obsidian swords with obsidian and they make GREAT starter weapon traps!

Dont waste it!
