I'm intrigued, yet suspicious...
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:18:00 pm »

Hey everybody.  As you all know, a new version is just around the corner, so I'm reluctant to start a fortress right now.  I was well-versed in the creation and maintenance of 2D fortresses, though admittedly work has gotten in the way of my proper enjoyment of the Z level stuff.  But I digress.

I find myself in a position right now where I want to play DF, but (as I mentioned above) I don't want to dive into a new fortress with a new release imminent.  The obvious choice, of course, is Adventure mode.  I have spent the last few days thoroughly enjoying reading threads like Most Awesome Thing You've Thrown and Epic Failures, so I am eager to try it out.  Unfortunately, I tried doing this and wound up wandering the world alone, unable to find a town, dungeon, cave, anything.

Basically I see all these great stories of guys in crazy armor using a dead colossus to explode a GCS, or using wrestling to break every bone in a naked mole rat's body, or throwing a giant serrated disc and watching limbs fly, but I don't know how to get that far.  Ordinarily I'd just study the Wiki for hints, but it's down for some reason.

Anyway, any advice as to how to get a truly badass adventurer started would be most welcome.

Thanks!

Adventure mode is at the moment very lacking in feature, and yet is quite entertaining due to the fact that you never know what will happen. If you happened to be lost in the wilderness you probably started as something else than human. Currently only human town are well fleshed out, dwarven and elven towns are quite empty(cant even call elven spots "towns", more like happy forest retreats).

So start a human and you will get to start in a tavern in a town. from there use the talk command on the mayor to get a quest. If the quest sound fun, accept it and go get killed. To improve your odds slightly, you can talk to townfolks and propose them to be meatshield for you, some of them might just be crazy enough to accept. On the unlikely chance that you would survive the first quest, return to boast about your deeds to the mayor who will be delighted and will not reward you in any way  :p

This is pretty much the base of adventure mode right now, the only reason it's so much fun is that you can do all sort of roleplaying stuff like become a psychopath, or declare a vendetta against all fish.

When you get the hang of it and know the world a little, its very fun to start a dwarf and go visit one of your failed fortress, indiana jones style.

Be sure to check the ingame help for the command list.  That's really the only thing you need to get started, just work with that for a while until you've got them all down.  Remember to use the travel screen (Shift-T) at every available opportunity, as trying to find stuff without it is almost pointless.

Also, I'm going to shamelessly plug my own 'Death and Glory!' thread, which is set entirely in Adventure mode.

Oh, and one more thing...  Never, ever, ever choose "Play Now!".  You will be a naked human out in the wilderness somewhere with absolutely no skills.  Unless you really know how to play, you will die in an entirely unspectacular fashion.

Adventure mode follows the same basic principle as Fort. mode...  "Losing is fun".

If you're ever in a pinch, just use the "pick up" key (G) to find some dirt or pebbles.  These will serve you well as thrown projectiles.

My advice for adventuring? Search for a settlement thats being accosted by savage beasts. Goblin tower and chasm critters? Human town and skeletal wildlife? Dwarven stronghold and underground? All good choices. The only problem is finding where the action is before everybody dies.

Also, check out every temple you can. I hear there are some with magma at the bottom. I want to find one so I can take a hammer and launch the goblin high-priest into their doom-pit.

"THIS IS ARMOOOOOOOOK!"

Unfortunately, it's always an inescapable pit of water.

For every story of epic death and conquest, there are dozens of complete ignominity.

Remember to use a good sized world to adventure in.  Small and pocket worlds sometimes don't even have room to generate all the civs, and will be cleared out very quickly.  And like Kagus said, never use Play Now.

To get cool stuff like improved armor, serrated disks, and artifact weapons (socks) to kill people, remember that the only way is to make them yourself and abandon the fortress.  Abandonment is about the only way to find wicked monsters like trolls and spiders too.

And of course, the challenge modes.  Take wrestling skill as high as you can, then ask the human king for megabeast quests.  Swim across the ocean and fight whales, if you can find them.  Take all throwing skill and slaughter a goblin tower with their clothes.

I've seen trolls outside of fortresses before.  They were in a Titan's lair.  Very nicely colored blood.  The Titan itself was very anticlimactic.  I threw a spear at him and broke his neck.

I began in the world of Udon Tadin, The Domain of Enchanting.  My name is Omba Rarehumor, and I am a human of Pesor Ulum.  I am a proficient armor user, a skilled wrestler and thrower, and a novice bowman.  I was hoping that being a bowman would provide me with some arrows to throw, but I was mistaken.

I began in a tavern, alone with the Mayor, Zekdu Peeklion.  He quickly tells me of how our capital, Hardywreaths, was founded in 1 by The Group of Picks of The Confederacy of Cavities.  I double-check to make sure I'm not a dwarf, and continue the discussion.

He has a task for me.  Speaking for The Band of Excavating, he asked me to travel a half-day east to The Glacial Pits.  Once there, I was to kill Srojombus, the kobold Elite Bowman.

Despite knowing by reputation that the task set before me was impossible, I tried to gear up as best I could.  No one was eager to join me.  A guard, Engdul Basiccounsel, told me that "Life is, in a word, rumors."  I continue to explore the village, taking some meat out of a barrel in a seemingly empty house before stumbling upon a shop.  Using the meat purloined from the peasant's house, I buy some Iron Greaves and a leather helm from Emtha Foundnotched, the shopkeeper at The Armor of Excavating.  Unfortunately, the helm was still marked as stolen when I picked it up, so I had to leave it there in the store.

I went to The Rainy Assault to buy a weapon, but I could not afford the battle axe I wanted.  ...so I stole the food from several more houses.

A few moments later, I owned a *<<Copper>>*.  It menaces with spikes of superior quality hippo leather and superior quality mussel pearl.  There is a finely-designed image of traveling humans in Palm on it as well.

Geared up as best I could, and with no willing companions, I left the village.  On my way to die a horrible death at the hands of the Elite Bowman, I am beset by a Giant Lion.

The lion attempts to strike first, but misses and I counterattack with my spiffy new axe.  Its right rear leg is cut!  I then charge at the beast, who is surprised at the ferocity of my onslaught.  I hack at the lower body which is now badly gashed.  We collide, and I am knocked over and tumble backwards.  While I lay stunned, the giant lion bites me in the head, badly ripping it.  It latches on, shaking violently until a chunk is torn away.  The lion spits it out as I regain my composure.  Before I can act, a second lion has also latched on, this time to my left lower arm, tearing it and once again tearing a chunk away.  I bravely take a swing at the original lion, but the shot glances away.  It too misses me.  Unfortunately, his companion did not.  With my upper body and head badly ripped, I am torn to shreds by the two lions.  Thus ends the story of Omba Rarehumor.

------- the end --------

Oh well.  I sort of have a handle on how shops work now, and I believe I will forego wrestling in favor of skill with an actual weapon on my next build.

Combat happens really quickly.  the lions seemed to take several turns for each of mine.  Either that or I was getting stunned without an announcement saying such.  Are Giant Lions hardcore, or was I just killed by a nobody?

Lions are medium-nasty. GIANT lions... much nastier. No shame there. And I praise you for your skill in shopping; I've tried a few times, but never found it worth the trouble. Wandered into goblin towers instead.

When you get knocked over, this slows you down, so a standing enemy has a considerably speed advantage.

Nice writeup!

Make sure you take complementary skills.  If you are a crossbowman, take a few points in hammerman, so you can defend yourself in melee in a pinch if you have to.  Same for bowman and swordsman.

Also, as soon as you start, hit 'c' and change your attack preference to strike and your charge defense to dodge away.  You'll avoid a lot of falling down if you're not charging or trying to stand your ground when attacked.

If you want to improve your odds a bit, spend some time training your ambushing (by sneaking around a lot) and throwing skills (by picking up lots of small stones and throwing them at yourself) first. This will also improve your stats considerably.

Or better yet, sneak back and forth in water to train your sneaking and swimming.  But yeah, without training, you aren't going to survive a single real fight.

Behold, my second attempt at adventuring!  Behold it!  I took some advice from you guys in that I took a good amount of time to train up ambushing and throwing before I did anything else.  As you'll read below, it was a lifesaver.

I once again began in the world of Udon Tadin, The Domain of Enchanting.  My name is Mong Syruppoke, and I am a human of Kamcamong.  My initial layout wound up as follows (based on my skill selections):

Attributes:
Strong
Very Tough

Skills:
Skilled Swordsman
Skilled Shield User
Skilled Armor User
Thrower
Novice Ambusher

Equipment:
Iron Scimitar
Iron Shield
Iron chain leggings, mail
Iron Helm, Gauntlets, Boots
Leather vest and loincloth

As usual, I begin by talking to the mayor of Tangledthorns, Lic Scoldsupper.  Speaking for The Flowery League, he bade me travel to The Shaft of Language.  It was here that the Cyclops Uja Spikepant lived.

I spent a good amount of time in the town in order to train up my skill in ambushing and throwing.  I won't bore you with talk of my training, but I will say that by the end of my exploits in the town, I was a Legendary+ Thrower, an Expert Ambusher, Very Strong, Very Agile, and Unbelievably Tough.

I met High Priest Githa Rapidscrubbed at The Monastery of Laws.  She tells me to pray to Stalcon, but he never talks back.

Night falls, and I get to witness a peasant choke a Rhesus Macaque until it falls unconscious, at which point he beats it to death.  During the night I have some difficulty training, as the water in my canteen and all of the surrounding lakes freezes during the night.  I eventually had to take small breaks to Travel around for water/food.

As morning rises, a flying iron arrow strikes another Rhesus Macaque in the head, piercing the entire way through.  Naturally it was dead, having been shot and killed by some guard outside of my visual range.

The day (and my training) continues, when suddenly a peasant decides to punch a horse.  The horse rears back, kicking the peasant in the chest.  The peasant charges, punching the horse in its lower body.  Unfortunately for her, she collided with the horse and was knocked over.  The horse used this opportunity to step on the peasant's foot, badly bruising two toes.  Adding injury to insult, the horse also breaks the peasants left shin.  The peasant rises from her stunned state, only to be kicked in the upper body.  Although she was having
trouble breathing, she again attempted to punch the horse.  The shot glanced away, and the horse kicked her again, breaking her left lower arm.  The peasant gives in to pain, and the horse really goes to town on her, bruising and battering the poor woman all over.  She briefly regains consciousness, only to have her upper body collapse into a lump of gore upon impact with the horses hoof.  I decide to keep my eyes open for horses so that one day I may avenge Jirdo, the peasant woman.

But wait!  The horse isn't done!  Thrown into an apparent blood frenzy, it then attacks and kills a small child!  I am now duty-bound to find this vile steed.  I roam the outskirts of town for a long time, searching for any sign of the horse or the corpses of its victims.  Just as I am about to give up hope in my hunt for the horse, I hear a commotion - another peasant has fallen victim.  My
search is redoubled, but night begins to fall.  As day fades, so do my chances of finding the evil horse.  I continue looking, undeterred.  Several more peasants and a priest fall victim before The Merchant Princess manages to fell the vile beast, who at this point was named Fensastespir Jomsaatir.

The horse defeated, I make my way to The Shaft of Language to kill the cyclops Uja Spikepant.  After a bit of exploring, I manage to sneak up on the cyclops thanks to my training in ambushing.  From a few tiles away, I throw a small granite rock at the beast, which strikes her square in the upper body.  The upper body is bruised, and the cyclops's liver and upper spine are both also badly bruised.  On top of that, the cyclops is now having trouble breathing!  Subsequent shots are less effective, all glancing away.  I soon run out of stones to throw, and am forced to throw some loamy sand.  Fortunately enough, this shot bruises the cyclops's right shoulder.  At this point she finally spots me, and we fight back and forth for some time.  She charges, and I am stunned.  While I am out of commission, she mangles my sword arm, leaving me without a weapon.  I survive for a time by throwing sand at her, until eventually she charges again.  This time I am able to dodge away and make it to my sword, which had been laying on the ground behind the beast.  Unable to wield the sword, I do
what I'm best at and throw it:

quote:
The spinning Iron Scimitar strikes The cyclops in the head!
It is cut!
The cyclops's right ear has been badly cut!
The cyclops's left ear has been badly cut!
The cyclops's throat has been slashed out!

I could not have asked for a better shot - a new smile that is literally ear to ear.  At this point, the cyclops is alive, but she is winded, in pain, tired, and bleeding heavily.  At this point, dear reader, you and I both know that the fight is over.  No matter what happens, the cyclops will be dead.  Unfortunately, she did not get the memo.  She continually charges at me, eventually wresting away my waterskin (which she then procedes to hit me with).  Now I am tired, though she is Faint from exertion and lack of proper breathing.  She makes one final charge, but I am able to jump away.  The cyclops, Uja Umilrujit, falls to the ground dead from exsanguination.

I grab my belongings (and the corpse of the cyclops) and begin to make my way out of the cave.  That's when the ratman spots me.  I turn a corner and begin to sneak, not wanting to get into another fight while I still remain unable to use my sword.  It works, and I am able to return safely to town.  Not only have my wounds healed, but I learn that during my conflict with the beast, I gained some skill in Wrestling and became more agile!

And so, after my first quest, here's how Mong Syruppoke is doing:

Attributes:
Very Strong
Extremely Agile
Unbelievably Tough
Speed: 1369

Skills:
Skilled Swordsman (0/900) - No skill gains due to injury
Skilled Shield User (617/900)
Skilled Armor User (246/900)
Legendary+ Thrower (870/2100)
Expert Ambusher (728/1300)
Novice Wrestler (124/600)

Gear:
Iron Scimitar
Iron Shield
Iron chain leggings, mail
Iron Helm, Gauntlets, Boots
Leather vest, loincloth, and cape! (I grabbed the cape off of one of the horse's victims)

I think I've finally gotten the hang of the basics of adventure mode.  In retrospect, had I known how easy it was to train ambushing and throwing, I would have used those points somewhere more useful (like Armor User or Sword User).  Nonetheless, I now have a successful adventurer.  My next trip, regardless of the mayor's whims, will be to go back to that cave and slaughter some ratmen.  I'm backing up my save after every major adventure, simply because I don't really have the time to retrain ambushing and throwing every time I want to roll a new guy.  Plus, it would be kind of demoralizing to lose a great adventurer to a random lucky shot.

Still, I wish I could have found and killed that horse.  I still have no idea where it was.  It would be nice if we could be told from which direction the incoming announcements were being made, that way we could have a chance of helping.

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys.  Once I feel more confident, I'll try learning how to wrestle.  Seems complicated.
