Build your own Goblin tower.

My current mission with dwarf fortress is to build my own 15 z-level goblin tower. To do this I will build a fort normally in DF mode, however the catch is I will use cage traps as my main defense. Over the years I plan to capture 100's of goblins, beak dogs + trolls. These caged enemies will be placed in a massive stockpile while I build the tower.

Upon completion of the tower and obtaining sufficient goblins I will abandon my fortress. When abandoning a fortress, every caged animal gets released. These enemies will hopefully populate the tower if my theory is correct. Thus making an ultimate quest for any adventurer seeking legendary glory.

I am wondering is this possible to do, ie will the goblins stay in the tower when I come back in adventure mode? If so has anybody else attempted such a feat before.

Here's a suggestion: Actually build a certain number of cages on every floor.
Link every cage on one floor to a lever on the next down.  You have to pull that lever to advance to the original floor (How you do that shouldn't matter, whether it be floodgate, etc) so you release them.  Animals in cages are stuck there until release, so you won't have to worry about them getting away.
And you can control where they end up.

Sorry to say this, but I don't think this will work. I've had a fort made in a goblin tower before(I started there, bringing a band of fighters only with little to no non combat skill.) and when it turned out my dwarves refused to move more than 10 squares from the wagon, even as military dwarves, I abandoned. Then, I went to reclaim: All I found was some stuff left behind, and goblin corpses, as well as animal corpses. If I'm wrong here, though, then this sounds like a nice idea.

This is building a tower, not building a fort in one.

Don't animals in your fortress die spontaneously when you abandon?

EDIT: Tested this 10 seconds ago by embarking, abandoning, then playing now.

Don't know about sentient creatures though.

Sentients stay around, and usually end up becoming migrating groups.

Yeah, I don't think this is going to work.  They'll all be dead, or they'll go home.  You'll have to get there fast.

Is this a way of getting around the whole goblins are dieing thing. It sounds like it should work.
