"It appears that Miss Rhian is rather distressed by the false assumption, Your Majesty."
"Ah... Apologies, Miss Rhian. That was the only conclusion I could make given the very limited amount of information I have... Nevertheless, what I've said about the paths of duty and desire should apply to whatever truly ails you, and you have an ally within me as long as it does not threaten Dunland and its people, for I am a monarch of the people both noble and common."

"Truth be told, dearest sister, I am contemplating how much I should state in that matter... But you're a warrior who survived one of the greatest ordeals our regiment ever met. I should treat you like a mature adult at the most minimum."

The Count Palatine lets out a short-lived sigh.

"I'll not disclose my sources for now, but I know that Sir Dunas was once a stable boy at the royal court. He was discovered by Sir Thrum who decided to make him his squire, for some reason. But at some point, years later, Sir Thrum renounced him, only for King Alfalm to knight Sir Dunas shortly thereafter. And then his mother, a peasant seamstress, moved into the castle."

He looks towards Emilia with a stern gaze.

"The order of events simply doesn't make sense. Why got Sir Dunas made a Royal Knight when Sir Thrum ultimatively rejected the squire? Why was he a royal stable boy in the first place when his mother wasn't part of the castle household until much later? His almost 30 years of life are an exemplary story of a man who came from nothing and achieved everything, but I fear it may be exactly that: A story. I am not putting his achievements in question, they are self-evident. I am putting his origin into question."

"I'll keep that in mind. Thank you, Your Majesty." She didn't feel up to elaborating, given her plans involved harm to one of the people of Dunland. "I've always thought that the nobility should rule for everyone under them or not at all, so it's good to hear your stance."

"Artair Brandt, Miss Rubinelle. I would be delighted. I suppose if such topics would be too long, is there anything interesting and short you've seen on your travels as part of the Archology Guild?"

More books to read, when I find time between training and duties. Though I'm not a scholar, I suppose miss Maria might like them. Hopefully things are fairly peaceful for a while..

"Though on the topic of Duke Zornac, I do not believe he would go to such lengths, even if he would have rather cut ties back then." Grandmother was talking with him, wasn't she.. I wonder why.

Emilia pauses.

She thinks carefully. The implications of the King hiring a peasant boy, to keep them close to him in his royal court; Emilia might not have approved of the skulduggery of noble life, but this did not make her unfamiliar with scandals. She had become a Maiden Warrior, after all, in part to avoid that.

She chooses her words, and speaks in a low whisper.
"If you are getting at what I think you're getting at, then Lord Dunas might well be the most important person in this entire room. But we cannot be the only people to wonder about his past in this room."

Eiriol tilts her head at Thrums reaction to Dunas and the king.

"Do you have a problem with Dunas mister big guy Thrum? Your staring at him like you are trying to burrow a hole through him."

Maria thought about the words of the Duchess for a bit. She had a different plan for this conversation. Then again, she was aware enough to read the room and not scare such a fair lady with gruesome matters. So she took a moment, thinking back to books of old that she read to come up with something to test the crown prince's wisdom.

"Alright then, but again, it is a rather though question I myself have been struggling to find the answer to: This thing all things devour: birds, beasts, trees, flowers; gnaws iron, bites steel; grinds hard stones to meal. What is it?"

While the mage had found an answer to the riddle that her Teacher asked her to keep her mind sharp; she remembered how much time she spent reading through all these different books to always fall short of the right answer. In a way, this question had been robbing her of a few night's sleep indeed.

"I know a fair share of grim and vile beasts but none fit the description quite perfectly."

"Of course, I am setting an example for my children after all. All three of them..."

Her voice simmers down to a whisper and her head slightly drops, the corners of her mouth twitching for a moment.

"... Miss Rhian. I thank you for your company. May your life and future be blessed by the Goddess."

It seems she wants to be left alone for now.

"Certainly not. But I assume the court hasn't digged deeper into that mystery because... Let's face it. Why would it be done in the first place? We are a society of divine bloodlines after all, it is the most important foundation to protect ourselves from the return of the Dark God. If I can solve that one, that would be the breakthrough I would need. The breakthrough the court would need."

Patrice looks once more towards Dunas.

"As silly as the order of events is I just stated... the current situation is even more stupendous in comparison. After all, if he would be so important as you and I presume, why jeopardize his life with the war and an outpost and give him a status without greater weight... Who are you, knight?"

"Anything interesting but short, quite the tall order... ... Best I could say is that I am certain that I witnessed a living relic a few weeks ago. It was by chance and from a distance, but I saw the Sage amongst Sages himself, Meshel. He was at the top of a cliff, observing a forest. I couldn't find a way to climb the cliff and something compelled me to not draw attention to myself. Me and holding back at the sight of wonder? Impossible, so he must have done something that prevented me from disturbing him. Thinking about it... I don't think I've heard nor seen birds or critters in his vicinity. Even the waterfall in the distance seemed awfully quiet..."
"So strange. Although those are indeed abilities I would imagine someone blessed by the Goddess to have."
"Even stranger, I can't recall where exactly I saw him. Only that it was a cliff with a waterfall somewhere. I couldn't even pinpoint it down to which nation it was, I may have said a few weeks ago, but it could have been entire months too. And I guarantee you that I'm keen about details otherwise. It must have been him."

Sir Thrum jolts back into his awareness for his surroundings.

"Oh! I wouldn't exactly say I have a problem with him, but... ... Humm. He certainly gets a lot of attention from His Majesty for someone of low birth and no blood. He better remember that he wouldn't be anything without me!"
"Well, you poked the bear now, squirrel avenger. I'll excuse myself."

Lady Vigrid moves a few steps aside, leaning against a wall and crossing her arms. The large knight has now set his gaze on Eiriol.

"I was his teacher, I tell you! His educator, his trainer, his sparring partner. Everything he knows about knighthood, he got it from me. My intuition told me that stable boy had blood within, hence I took him under my wings. My best years, I focused on him so he could eventually become my equal, like Lady Vigrid, or Sir Worden, or even Sir Jernigan even if he is not of Charos. And then I managed to convince His Majesty to undergo an Emblem Ceremony and... nothing! A bloodless whelp!"

He aggressively and dramatically throws a punch at the air. His cheeks flush a healthy and lively red as his breaks to breathe inbetween sentences become shorter and shorter.

"And now he's His Majesty's favourite knight for some reason. Knights should be of blood, for they are the first line of defense againt evil! Sir Dulosta and Sir Dunas, they make a farce out of the court with their presence! They will invite evil to the court! I know it! Her Highness shared the vision of a blood-soaked claw with me! This would not be without these two!"

Thrum begins to waver in his stance and quickly sits down, taking multiple deep breaths.

"... Oh my... Thas was unbecoming of me, squirrel avenger... Please, forgive me."
"Got it out of your system, Thrum?"
"I am so sorry. My passion for chivalry and knighthood can be... overflowing at times."

"Hmm... That is quite the beast you're describing. In my experience though, such rhyming questions often ask for a concept, rather than an actual creature. They are a test after all, proof that the student is capable of their own thinking without their master."
"A concept? So, like time?"
"Something like that, Your Grace. A concept that consumes all of physical existence indiscriminately, but wouldn't require to do so for nourishment... ... Wait, that indeed sounds like time!"

Marigold let out a pleased chuckle.

"That would indeed be an impossible beast to slay. Only the divine can stand above time itself."

Sir Dunas and King Alfalm separate. The latter approaches the throne (compelling Rhian even further to take her distance now) while the former moves to the group of Rork, Ceodor and Noel.

"His Majesty says he will hold the ceremony soon, as expected. He does not know that we have the Fire Emblem. Which means... he is willingly using a mockery of the emblem for whatever reason."

He looks once more towards the thrones.

"... The best time to reveal the Fire Emblem and Noel's blood would be soon, during the ceremony..."

Dunas' head lowers a bit.

"But the court had been peaceful so far. And it would be enough of a scandal that I wouldn't be able to uphold my promise towards Lulu."

The gaze is now fully towards the floor.

"... No, those are excuses. The truth is... I am afraid."
"Sir Dunas...?"
"..."

Rhian murmured a quiet thanks for the advice and made her exit. Even she was aware enough to let the woman be after that. She briefly considered going for another glass of wine, before deciding that she probably shouldn't dull her wits any further (especially given present company.) Instead, she drifted back in the general direction of Dunas, trying not to glare at Thrum as he had his outburst.

Rork looked down at Dunas for a moment, a bit conflicted as to what advice he should offer. Their differing stations aside, he had never been one well gifted with words. He braced himself like he would before a battle, hoping he could reassure his new liege.

"Y'sure that.. Uh, His Majesty knows which one's which? Easiest way to nick something is to make it look like it never was moved. Just swap out the real deal with the fake and who'd be wiser. And uh... Besides, m'lord. Do you think the court is real peaceful when someone gives something like an Emblem to a loony like Ghal? ... He'd never have made it work. Too mad. If we don't do this now, when will it bite us?"

Emilia considers the situation.

"If I'm right, the best place to hide someone like that would be in plain sight, Patrice. Think about it. Nobody would think to look twice at him with his history, as impressive as it is; they would assume he was nobody of import and leave him be, no reason to investigate. As for why? To avoid scandal. If my assumption is right.....someone of that importance, without holy blood; that would rock the kingdoms to their core."

Emilia taps her chin in thought.

"The Maiden Warriors have never cared for blood ties, so long as you can fight in the name of peace, but the same cannot be said for all. Even our positions in society are largely because of our descent from Usala. To put someone bloodless - as far as I know - in a position of prominence among the nobility, let alone the royal court would invite outrage. I intend to repay my debt to Sir Dunas regardless of his importance or lack thereof. He is a good man, and one myself and my companions owe their lives to, but....this makes things far more complicated than I'd hoped."

Odd. A few weeks ago.. Such would be near the settling of Wyrmpeak..

"That is rather interesting.. There is strange magic in the world. But such is proof the Goddess still watches over Khalderas, if her Chosen is acting."

Eiriol visibly frowned at Thrum's out burst which is was something that was rarely seen on her face.

"You sound like my grandpa always going on about fancy blood this fancy blood that. Everyone should be able to fight the bad guys no matter how fancy or unfancy their blood is." she said crossing her arms with a huff.

"Hmmm..."

Patrice seems to be in deep thought, pondering about his sister's words.

"He is a good man. I won't doubt that. A hard worker, a qualified warrior, and with Ghal's death he also cemented himself a protector of people. But is goodness all that motivates him? Or does he desire to prove something? To others? Or to himself? That truly is..."

"Such is no insolence for me. A proper ruler should face each challenge and find innovative solutions where others would only see a rock and a hard place. I may not have the full strength of the blood as Secondborn, but I will balance it with qualities the people wish to see in a ruler. Especially after this war."

Marigold grows silent. On the flipside, Duchess Eleshyn has an encouraging smile.

"I guess you really could call Meshel the Seventh Chosen, even if he is most likely not of blood."
"I just wish the Sage could guide us, the people of Khalderas, more actively. Maybe the war could have been prevented, or the disappearance of the Mamkute Tribe, if he would have appeared at courts..."

"Maybe. There's value in soldiers too. But it is the duty of those of blood to spread it across the land and sacrifice themselves so those of Major Blood may live another day. The more people of blood, the more sturdy the seal holding back the Dark One is. It is not merely pride. It is to prevent a second Age of Strife."
"It's mostly pride with you though, Thrum."
"I am proud because I do my part in keeping humanity safe! Only Spawnkin wouldn't be proud of such a role... Well, that's too harsh of a statement, I admit. But blood exists for a reason, no matter if you like it or not, squirrel avenger."

"..."
"You're right, Rork. It will be impossible to swap them out secretly, especially now so shortly before the ceremony, but thank you. The truth... matters. Ceodor, you brought it with you as I asked, right?"
"Of course, Sir."
He hands over a simple, small bag to Dunas.

[Now Playing: Tear Ring Saga - Legend of Yutona]

King Alfalm stands tall in front of his throne and raises his hand, demanding attention. The royal siblings excuse themselves, with Arnston standing close to his father and Eleya taking a small jewelry box from the royal bodyguard Orlsen. The hall quickly becomes silent.

"We shall now commence the Emblem Ceremony."

Princess Eleya graciously delivers the box to King Alfalm.

"I am aware that this is a historic event, for it has been too long since the last one. A decade? Two? I shall adress the rumors right now: For the longest time, looking at the Emblem... it brought me pain. A pain shared by all of us, the kidnapping of Crown Prince Falmer. My hope ever burned bright to find him, but every time I saw the Fire Emblem, it made me falter in my willpower. And yet, I should have also thought of the people, of serving you all, of which a ceremony is integral. In that regard, I have disappointed you. Please accept my deepest apologies."

Alfalm opens the box in Eleya's hands, grasping something within it with silk gloves. The Fire Emblem. Or, as Dunas' Entourage is most likely aware of now, a convincing replica. It was not shining and no crest shows on his forehead. Unsurprising, since direct contact is necessary to show someone's bloodline.

"Even now, the Emblem weights heavily in my hands, far greater than the sum of its material components. Yet, hope must return once more for the people. I call the four Dukes and Duchesses of Dunland forward. First, of Angbar, Duchess Marigold. Do you wish to..."
Greoger Alfalm let his eyes shift to the side and suddenly grows silent, beginning to cough. If a particularily attentive one would follow his gaze, they would notice Sir Dunas, holding a jewel box quite similar to the one Eleya is still holding.
"He knows..."
The king quickly regains his composure.
"Pardon. Duchess Marigold, do you wish to confirm your presumed bloodless nature?"

She shakes her head, declining.

"Very well. Duchess Eleshyn of Felworn, do you wish to confirm your presumed mix of Charos and Usala blood?"

She, too, shakes her head and declines.

"I understand. Duke Laspa of Lestern, do you wish to confirm your presumed bloodless nature."

He politely declines.

"... Duke Zornac of Thavios, do you wish to confirm your presumed Charos bloodline?"
"I cannot fathom why the others would decline, but I shall not do so."

Eligor Zornac steps forward. King Alfalm gently rubs the emblem as he hands it over. As protocol demands, Zornac faces the audience, raising the Emblem above his head. The red gem on the Emblem glows, confirming Minor Charos. As soon as it began, the Emblem is returned to the king. He places it back in the jewel box, Princess Eleya lightly curties and brings the box back to Orlson.

"For something that didn't happen in so long, it was an unusually swift ceremony. Fate surely has its quirky path. With that done..."
"Your Majesty! If I may!"

Sir Dunas quickly steps forward, before the lowest step of the small stairs leading to the eleveated throne. The guests are confused, whispering to each other.

"Sir Dunas... That is rather uncouth of you."
"And I apologize for my sudden interjection. But I have not found the right time yet to deliver this gift of mine to you, so this may be the last moment before the guests separates into those who attend the desserts and those who enjoy their remaining stay in the guest quarters."
He looks towards Lulu for a second, his eyes saddened, as if wishing to say sorry to her.
"Dunas... Don't..."

The knight opens the jewel box, revealing the Fire Emblem. Of course, only those near the thrones could properly see it, but it was enough to make King Alfalm close his eyes and take a breath while his children and his bodyguard seem confused.

"I cannot fathom the purpose of such a... gift, Lord Dunas. Nor those of your actions."
"Why, royal knight, what is this?"

Prince Arnston steps forward and grabs the Fire Emblem, holding it in front of himself and thus making it visible for the audience. There was a gasp going through the audience as they realize what Sir Dunas presented to the royal family.
The Emblem did not glow.

"... What are you intending to do with such an insulting trinket, knight?"
"Wait... That means, Your Royal Highness is...!"

[Now Playing: Tear Ring Saga - Swordmaster]

A sudden strong rumble fills the hall, swiftly shutting down whatever was going on. From outside the hall, people begin to shout and shriek. As the confusion within the hall peaks, the western wall suddenly bursts, bricks and rubble flying through the air, hurting a few people, sadly including Tanja.

People instintively draw their weapons, if avaible, but as they realize what storms into the hall, the sheer awe and shock makes it difficult to uphold proper posture. For they witness something that hasn't been seen in decades. Something that, given the circumstances, is far worse than a Darkspawn.

Shimmering bronze scales and wings spread to assert dominance, a large dragon enters the scene.

"A... a Mamkute...! But how...?"

The air begins to smell of ozone, soon discharging into lightning bolts running across walls, the ceiling and the pillars. It didn't hit anyone, but the immediate threat makes people flee in a panic. The knights Dulosta, Jernigan and Vigrid help the people outside in as orderly a fashion as possible and also assisting or even carrying the injured while Orlsen reacts swiftly and guides the royal family towards the side entrance they came from, grabbing a panicking Queen Ulen by her arm.

In the end, only few people remain in the hall: Dunas' Entourage sans Tanja, Sir Thrum, Duchess Eleshyn and Count Palatine Ragnvald.

"Please come to your senses, mighty dragon! It is not yet too late for peaceful talk! What is it that you want?"
"I do not know where you come from, Mamkute, but stay your claw and transform back immediately if you don't want your head to decorate my wall!"
"It would be a shame if a Mamkute would die so shortly after one appears from beyond the veil of the past. Dearest sister, I shall protect you as I attempt to make the Mamkute come back to its senses."

"Oh, what in the bloody goddamned hell is this fresh heap of absolute fucking bullshit?" The restrained profanity from the last hours of polite conversation come spilling out as Rhian scrambles for her weapon, moving to place herself between the dragon and the direction the others had fled.

She stared up at the great beast, remembering her earlier anger at Zornac.

"Hey, dumbass!"

Rhian moves to K10 and Talks.

The warrior raises her axe high into the air. . . then slams it down into the floor next to her.
"I don't know what the hell you're on about, but calm down for a goddamned second! We're not your enemies here, or at least most of us aren't! I'm sure you're pissed about whatever happened with your tribe but you aren't alone in losing people!"
