There were probably a lot of people in this castle currently that would love to partake in the gossip and love story between Duchess Marigold and the Crown Prince Alfalm. People who would die for the chance to get to expierence such interesting matters first hand.

Maria was not one of those people.

"The name is Maria Rotgold, but I must apologize, I think I was interrupting something important right here. Should I remove myself from the situation and leave the three of you to your important matters?"

"You're an ambitious one. And with Wyrmpeak being No Man's Land, not too much of a fool's dream. Definitely made the right call to serve under Sir Dunas."
"I do wonder what happened twenty years ago to cause that to happen in the first place."
"Hmpf. It's too late anyway. They're all dead, and we must make the best out of the tragedy."
"It still remains to be seen. That would also mean the death of a bloodline, thus the return of the Dark One."
"Oh please, people that can transform into winged monsters? Sounds like Spawnkin to me, all of them. Good rid-"
"Hush."

Duke Zornac was visibly about to get into a great monologue. His dislike of the Mamkute Tribe is well-known at court. Thylessa's interjection shuts him up immediately and he adopts a more demure posture.

"... The wine, you see. I believe I'll stay my hand after this glass. Please forgive me for blabbering, Rhian."

"Heh. Be like that all year long and I ain't letting you see the little ones once I settle down with a nice housewife."

Noel looks up to Rork, slightly surprised.
"... Will be fine. Am here because I wanna find out what's the deal too, so I won't have regrets. Don't start getting some on my behalf, oaf."

"Splendid coast as always. Little has changed, so your return will truly feel like arriving at home. Except..."
Patrice seems flustered for a short moment, but only a short one.
"Well, it shouldn't be a surprise to you since you've seen it first-hand. The war took a toll on many warriors. Some are broken in body, many more in spirit. Her Majesty, Queen Sylphea of Alestia, sees this as us having failed and is attempting to take more direct leadership. It's a tough act to respectfully keep her at bay... ... Which is why I'm here."
The brother lets out a sigh, as if knowing that his next words will not be received well.
"If I intend to keep the essence of the Maiden Warriors alive and honor both Usala and Gunnthra, I see little choice but to gain favors with Dunland."

"Oh, please, Miss Rotgold, feel free to stay, very much so!"
"I'm once more terribly sorry for such an impression. I guess I still have to learn a lot more if I wish to make His Majesty proud."

An awkward moment of silence. But then, the prince slaps the underside of his right fist against the palm of his left hand, as if being granted a flash of brilliance.

"I know! Someone like you must be well-versed in the written words. The works of Meshel? The study of the arcane? Literature of various poets? I'm not as studious as my sister and am more martial than mage, but you shall find an enlightened man within me, Miss Rotgold. I've dabbled in them all."

The Princess acknowledges Artair and gently smiles.

"Greetings to you too, follower of Sir Dunas. Please, you are our guest, feel free to stay."
"Hm... You are looking familiar. Have we seen each other by any chance?"
"Caranbough Hills."
"Very astute. That was my guess too. I think I haven't introduced myself formally yet. Rubinelle of the Archeology Guild. And these two are my personal assistants, Brenner and Freyloh."
"Yes, yes." "Uh-huh!"
"I hope you have a bit of interest in Khalderas' past, especially Wyrmpeak's. I have heard fascinating things from Rubinelle and I'm sure she wouldn't mind repeating herself."

Eiriol, of innocent spirit as usual, earns herself two pairs of dumbfounded gazes. It was Vigrid that decides to speak first.

"What is it, squirrel avenger?"
"Squirrel ave..."

It was too late for restraint. Thrum lets out a bellowing laughter, earning himself a few surprised looks from various guests. Undisturbed by it, he continues until the laughter finally subsides.

"Damn, that was exactly what I needed!"
"... Whatever keeps your hand swinging in battle, Thrum."
"Alright, alright! Squirrel avenger! You have found the great Sir Thrum in a splendid mood! Speak your desires and I may be able to fulfill them!"
"Yeeeeaaah... That and if you know anything new about Sir Worden, say it now."

Eiriol shakes her head at Vigird

'Nothing new, sorry. We haven't had much time to look with the bonking of squirrel homewreckers." Eiriol said sounding a bit sad. "I don't really have anything i think i want mister big guy Thrum....unless you happen to be able to tell the squirrels to let me pet them." she said to Thrum.

"I can imagine that your Highness must be well educated on such manners, after all you wish to become a great ruler one day"

Maria thought about anything she could ask the Crown Prince. She had a lot of questions, as was natural for a scholar cut from her cloth, but it also wasn't always well recieved to see someone be so intrusive about such dark topics.

"I am afraid that the things I would love to discuss are most likely better suited for a Scholar rather than a Crown Prince. I dare not Insult your Highness, but I must doubt that you would have an answer to something that has robbed me of a good nights sleep for a while. Alas, if you allow, might I ask and see if you know the answer regardless?"

Maria was uncertain if she'd have the right person to ask such things of. It was, after all, an outrageous request. One she didn't think would yield any results.

Rhian carefully smoothed her face during Zornac's outburst. She had her own thoughts on the matter, but she was at least theoretically trying to make connections here.

"Of course, Duke Zornac. Drink can have that kind of effect." She resisted the urge to down her entire glass of wine in one go. "Whether it's a blessing or a tragedy, things are changing in response, and change means opportunity. It's a good time to make friends. Enemies too, but that can always happen."

Rork raises an eyebrow at Ceodor, not willing to let him get away with that one. "You know, back in our previous position you said the same thing. Seeing as you might have a chance to make that true now, I'm hurt." He lets out a small laugh to try and smooth it over, but it probably sounds more intimidating than he's hoping for.

"I've had my regrets, Noelle. Seeing as how we got you into this mess a bit, I wanted you to know I'll have your back through it."

Emilia ponders his words briefly.
"Those who do not set foot on the battlefield understand little of what effect it has on those who venture on to it. To take leadership of the the Maiden Warriors..."
Emilia holds her tongue.

"I suppose then, you have business with Sir Dunas, if you seek Dunland's aid in keeping the sisterhood independent."

"I will admit, I don't know much about their past. I grew up in a time where they were gone.."

"Though we've founded a village within these lands, I am curious as to what knowledge you have to share about their culture. As well as what happened to make them vanish so suddenly."

"I'd toast to that. I'm certain you'll get there in due time, Rhian."

The Marchioness simply smiles towards Rhian as she takes a sip. It was one of those smiles that look genuine at a cursory glance but reveals a wily understanding.

Ceodor smiles lightly, and so does Noel.
"Never too late to change your ways if ya wanna become a godfather."
"I know, you oaf. Gotta stick together in this weird world."

"More than just him. Even if I am curious about him the most. But no, I'll bargain with His Majesty, if opportunity shows its face. Maybe the Dukes and Duchesses too, but those are more trickier to deal with. Yes, that includes Duchess Eleshyn, despite being a former Warrior."

The Crown Prince lightens up.
"A challenge for the mind it is, then. You have permission to ask, Miss Rotgold."
"Oh? Does that mean, like a riddle, Miss? I love riddles!"

"Very commendable. I'll keep myself as short as possible and that begins by answering the second question: No one knows, sadly. It was a gradual disappearance, but there were no Darkspawn, no sickness nor plague, no curse or other foul magic at work and no one influencal harbors ill will towards them. The best I can imagine is Duke Zornac orchestrating something, his distrust of the Mamkute Tribe is known, but I can't imagine what he would have gained from that, so that's out of the question too. It truly is one of the greatest mysteries of our time."
"I can confirm that the Duke is... a divisive figure at court. But my father, His Majesty, and my brother, His Royal Highness, seem to be able to keep him in check and enjoy mutual benefits from working together. Given the wonderful work of the Hero of Light, His Majesty is without question the stronger force of said coexistence."
"In any case, the Mamkute Tribe has a rich and fascinating culture. Talking about it would last far longer than this break would permit, so I'll make sure to send a list of recommended works to the Dunas Outpost, plus any excerpt I might be willing to write, for your reading pleasure. I hope such an arrangement is satisfactory, Miss...?"

"I see... Thank you nonetheless."
"Heh. This big guy, those squirrels would rather take for a tree than a human, so I guess I have no power over making them more pettable. Rare and pure is the heart that has no wants, you're indeed a rarity in this place, squirrel avenger."

As time passes, you can see that Sir Dunas, who was inexplicably absent during the break, returns to the great hall through the door closest to the throne. He is accompanied by King Greoger Alfalm himself, sans his bodyguard Orlsen, and are in discussion with each other.

However, Orlsen is not far away, escorting Queen Ulen Alfalm to her seat instead, coming through the same door as Dunas and Alfalm shortly afterwards. They are silently waiting for the King, but with the most proper of approaches, this might be an opportunity in and of itself.

"Unsurprisingly, His Majesty does what His Majesty does best..."

"Man, knight guy has really hit it big with the king, somehow."

"I wonder... I could catch two fish with one net now, dearest sister."

"..."
Sir Thrum stares intensely towards Dunas and the king.

The break will be over soon.

Rhian politely made her exit, polishing off her wine and drifting away from the pair. There was little more conversation to be had at the time, and the Marchioness was plotting something. What it was, she didn't know, but it made her wary.

Seeing the potential opportunity, she approached the Queen and the bodyguard. Rhian bowed her head in the most respectful and proper curtsy she could manage.
"Greetings, Your Majesty," she began. . . And then paused, figuring it was best to wait for acknowledgement.

As one would expect, Orlsen closely observes Rhian's every move as she approaches. The Queen responds to Rhian's salutation, her voice weary yet unwavering.

"Welcome to the court, young lady... Hm, I'm afraid I'm unable to put your voice to a name..."
"Rhian Brant, one of the followers of Sir Dunas. No relation to the Brand family."
"Ah, one of the guests of honor. You have done a wonderful deed, Miss Rhian."

The Queen slightly leans forward.

"I can sense that you're a polite and just one. I don't need Orlsen to know that you've curtsied in front of me, a blind woman. I appreciate it very much... But I also noticed some uncertainty. Some worries, perhaps? Please, be unafraid of stating what's on your heart, Miss."

Rhian barely resisted the urge to snort.
"I think that's the first time in my life someone has complimented my manners." The blunt truth was that she was struggling with this. She knew the instructions, most of the words to say and gestures to make, but they were far from natural. "As for worries. . . Well, I've never spoken much with royalty, for one. And for two. . ." She mentally debated for a moment. Saying outright what her concerns were was more than a small risk, but it was the more straightforward approach, and dancing around things was tiring. "Some here know me as more than just Dunas's retainer and I don't know how their plans interact with mine."

"Hmmm..."

The Queen is visibly contemplating for a while.

"It is indeed a difficult crossroad, to have to decide between a duty that can impede your dreams, and a desire that can impede your standing. There are many who would exploit such uncertainty to their advantage, either by forcing you onto a path despite your best interest, or by offering a third path that sounds tempting at first, but will bring ruin onto both your duty and desire. Such is the fate of people, Miss Rhian."

She leans in even further and invites Rhian to come closer. Her voice is half a whisper now.

"However, if you take in the work to find your own third path, I am certain the court will, for short or for long, acknowledge the reality of your situation, and have no choice but to embrace it."

There is a faint smile and Rhian could swear that she would wink now if she weren't obscured by the cloth around her upper face.

"Rest assured that the Queen herself will root for you two secretive lovebirds, hohoho."

Rhian flushed a bit at the implication, incorrect though it was.
"Ah, that's not- I'm not having a bloody- ugh." She buried her face in her hands for a moment, then wiped them down it as if that would clear her consternation. "That's not what I meant."
