I won’t stop you from picking fire, because I did say anything, but I want to take the chance to caution you that choosing that option will make the game experience much harder, and probably not in a satisfying way, as it clashes with one of the mechanics fairly intensely.

A straight combat design is boring though. If we really think the GM knows best and decide we don't want to subvert their expectations for once (why don't you jerks show me the same courtesy), perhaps we do something like this instead:

Intrasystem Mass Acceleration Cannon

Our people have just come out of a planet-scale war that has left many nations in ruins, but this war also brought with it massive advancements in military technology that can now be translated into other industries.

The first MACs were magnetic cannons used by a number of nations to launch shells into the upper atmosphere and the edge of space itself in order to bombard their targets from the safety of their own nations. Now, with peace stretching before us for as long as we can see, we have researched means of repurposing these weapons of mass destruction.

What we have done is created massive cannons that can fling objects into orbit and beyond. The first civilian MACs were used to visit the moons, delivering payloads carrying the basic infrastructure needed for the first arrivals to construct basic housing and return MACs. The colonies were able to flourish thanks to consistent trade of materials back and forth, and so funding and manpower poured into the development of more powerful, more reliable MACs. These MACs, now capable of providing transport to the furthest reaches of our system, are renamed IMACs and open up a whole new realm of possibility in the field of space travel.

Compromise: Caveman Druids

Fire Spirit Taming:
A spirit lives in everything. Some are silent and simple, like the spirit of a drop of rain. Some are wiser than any man, like the elderly spirit of a mountain. Some are entirely human- like the spirits within you and me.

Fire is short lived but hungry as a wolf. As we learned to tame wolves, our shamans wondered if that was any different than taming a simple spirit. A fire spirit is giving offerings of high quality, such as meat in lean times, a warrior’s beloved spear, or the bodies of the honored departed. In return the spirit, and the fire it lives in, obeys the shamans command like a dog. It can only follow simple commands, like moving in a direction or burning someone the Shaman points at. Otherwise the fire and its properties can be controlled by verbal or hand commands. It can be made hotter, brighter, have more or less smoke, and even change color if proper offerings are available.

OKAY SO THE JIG IS A LITTLE BIT UP

Looking at the Discord I saw that the way I’m being completely vague here doesn’t seem to be working out, so I’ll peel the veil back and reveal some of what’s going on here - although the thread will be following a single protagonist, who will be building individual weaponry, this first prompt establishes the setting the protagonist operates from, and thus a lot of their skillset. A big part of the reason I warned against Fire is that it gives little to work with on that ends. Things like the treant druids are still perfectly advisable since they have a skillset of some sort built in, but I would advise against anything hobbling.

Edit: In fact, after some consideration, even though I said I wasn't going to, I think I have to rule that Fire (and Fire Spirit Taming) aren't valid options to choose for this prompt. Since I already took the step of revealing what's going on, it's better than I provide more firm grounds to move forward on. There needs to be at least some tech or magic or something like that to work with, and though it really doesn't need to be a lot, going fully pre-civilization is where I have to draw the line.

I like the idea of the Treant, even without the GM veto.

I scoff at your cavilier rejection of a low powerlevel!

Really, being the one to personally invent fire sounds like a brilliant suggestion game, even if it'd make the arms race portion tricky.  Doesn't mean we can't do more than just Fire with the second design or another action.

Druids or magic or something normal just sounds boring to me.

I mean, if we need more, just have us choose a second thing right away.

You would not be the one to personally invent fire, since this first design is an exception to the rule and is not something the player character is creating - if that is the suggestion game you're looking for, it's just not the one that was in store here in the first place, I'm afraid.

I did not want to say no here, especially given that I did encourage creativity with how the prompt was addressed, but I do have a game I am running and unfortunately this simply conceptually doesn't work at all with what that game would be. It's a ruling that'll therefore be sticking, period.

Quicklime Bellow

Quicklime is simple to make, a compound known even since prehistoric times. It increases in size and produces heat when it contacts water. Humans are mostly made of water, so if you get this stuff inside your lungs or eyes you're in big trouble. The quicklime bellow is a backpack filled with quicklime dust attached to a large hand-bellow by a highly flexible leather hose. When the bellow is pushed together it releases a cloud of quicklime dust choking and blinding any who are caught in the blast. In favorable winds a group armed with quicklime bellows can easily eliminate an entire enemy formation. It is especially potent against enemy ships, easily clearing them out without having to send anyone below deck.

In order to protect themselves from the effects of their own weapons, bellow operators are equipped with long robes and a bird-like mask with glass covering the eyes. Conventional soldiers are utilized to allow these units to get close enough to utilize this weapon, but longer-range options are available with basically anything capable of throwing the backpacks.

Paleolithic technology is still technology, you know. And there's lots to discover from that starting point.

That said~

Shadow Aperture

Magic has long been a component of civilization, some say it's the catalyst which divides us from mere animals. But the ability to manipulate the physical world using magic has long been largely theoretical.
The Shadow Aperture changes that. Directing a huge amount of magical energies to a singular point, and then directing that point sideways, creates a pinprick breach between our world and the next, a shadowy realm containing
PURE. ENERGY.

The benefits of this are obvious, and the new "shadow essence" from this plane is quite readily able to manipulate matter. The only downside is a small amount of, er, concerning corruption applied to anything which comes into contact with the shadow essence.
