*Account of suicide in a NPC Dwarven fort*

There just isn't any coding for interesting things in NPC mountain homes and forest retreats yet.  Towns are currently the only places to find functioning shops and homes, and the only place where it's not a chore to find the leader of the settlement.  The next version is going to make adventure mode a lot more interesting though.

It's gonna suck if everything good is dead before worldgen starts though.

I just made a swordsman, put Crusader for his profession name, and went out to cast down Gozru Tombsins, the demon god of the nearby goblin civilization.  After purging over a dozen of his filthy worshipers, the demon himself announced his presence, and leapt from the top of his tower.  I threw my spear and hit him in the hip, due to the weird flying bug, he fell.

Five Z-levels.

And survived!  Nearly every part of his body was broken or mangled, but he was alive after falling five Z-levels.  A testament to the absurd constitution of a demon.  Then, in what could've been the coolest moment in DF history if it weren't for my lack of planning, I drop my sword and grab his head to gouge out his eyes(Coolest moment ever would've been if I had dropped the shield, grabbed him by the head, and then started hitting him.  Just imagine that, a demon is lying mortally wounded, and the human knight grabs him by the horn, lifts his head up, and then cleaves it in half with his sword.  It just screams awesome).  Long story short, I wasn't able to gouge out his eyes due to a tiny hand and low wrestling skill, he burned off my face with a fireball, and the fight degraded into a Who's Going to Regain Consciousness First Contest.  This went for a while, as we both went in and out too quickly to do any real damage.  That is, until he breathed fire and fireballed in the same turn.  Now I'm dead, and since he didn't suffer any permanent damage, I can't make a new guy to finish him off, I'm going to have to kill him legitimately.

It's quite posible to survive such a fall, you just have to hope nothing critical gets damaged. A wounded lung is usualy fatal and can occur at z-2 aswell.

Rendor Randommaster says: "We are in RandomTown.  In the year 187, Rendor Isoldinub became the leader of RandomTown.  Kill Rendor Isoldinub."  Then I look and see that this guy IS Rendor Isoldinub.

The race typically sends me on quests to kill other leaders of towns in their own race (lots of infighting I guess), but this guy must have multiple personalities that hate each other.

Perhaps he worships one of those gods of suicide? Though, would killing him get the guards angry, despite its his wish to die?

My spearmaster was ambushed by a jaguar.  The jaguar charged him, but the spearmaster jumped out of the way.

Into an inescapable swamp.

Well, basically, there was a giant, see. I went after it with a human lasher and get brutally murdered. I go after the same giant with a swordsman who can't seem to find the thing, starts setting things on fire to maybe smoke him out (that or he was a pyro), and then finally encounters said giant and gets tackled to the ground... and burns to death. A check of the Legends says nothing about the giant (Gok Nutssearches, of all things) dying in said fire, so I assume he lived.

I go with a human axeman to hack the damn thing to pieces, and encounter a group of wolves... but I spawn in an empty pool. With no way to get up to hack the canines to pieces, added to the fact they won't go away, I nearly give into despair when I recall throwing. I manage to mud the five wolves to death, leave, and go on my merry way.

I then get ambushed by wolves by a river. They promptly bite my axe out of my grip, and I escape across the river, bleeding profusely. I pull the mud trick again (only with sand this time), kill them all, grab my axe, and head to Mr. Giant Place. After a lot of fruitless searching above and below ground (The cave was thankfully quite small), I decide to take a swim to try boosting stats and have the ever-elusive giant wander by while I'm at it. (I got Novice Swimmer on a whim at char creation).

I forgot to move down/below and promptly drowned. Whoo. After that, the giant apparently got smart and left the area entirely, as the town wasn't griping about him anymore.

There's also the tale of the elf bowman who raided a goblin fortress, found an underground road and started wandering down it like a fool, nearly died of starvation and thirst (drank the blood covering his stuff; unfortunately had nothing edible) until he miraculously found another goblin fortress. He made a mad dash for the aboveground, but was cut in twain by a goblin thief.

With an iron dagger.

To the upper body.

In one hit.

Granted, he was drowsy AND hungry, but still. That's what I get for making a tree-hugger, I guess.

I made a crossbowman to try and stealthily take on a goblin tower.  I'm walking to the tower across the hills when I'm ambushed by wolves.  I hadn't had a problem with wolves when I was doing melee, so I wasn't too worried.  I shoot one and kill it with a single bolt, but before I can do anything else the remaining four wolves rush me, knock me down, and start tearing out chunks.  I'm dead before I know it, literally half a minute into the game.

I've been Dorfortan' it for several months now, but it has only been in the past few days that I have tried my hand at adventure mode.  I've got a jillion maps with fortresses chock full of shiny adamantine goodies, so of course I sent one of my first adventurers, Inod Carnalglove, to stake some claims.  She's going about being a total badass with her finely crafted adamantine sword - you know, tripping into giant cave spiders and ripping them apart, lopping off cyclop heads, et cetera - when I alt-jump into a river, thinking I'll be able to simply hop out later on.

Not so much, I find.  Instead I'm left swimming in an attempt to find an actual riverbank, eating and drinking and decimating the sea lamprey population until Miss Carnalglove is drowsy.  Wondering how she'll hold up, I put her to sleep.  She wakes up in an entirely different section of river - and she wakes up THIRSTY.  Double misfortune befalls, as this river is connected to an ocean and I have yet to find a bank.  If only Kevin Costner were around with his piss-filtering contraption, perhaps she could have toughed it out.  :<

Alas, Inod Carnalglove and her precious +Adamantine Short Sword+ are lost to the depths, cursed to be nibbled upon by fishies for all time.

Okay, so maybe this isn't epic fail.  Maybe this is epic dumb newbie.  Such is life!

Especially so.  You can safely drink the water covering your clothes, even if they got wet with saltwater.
