Noob Problems
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:10:00 pm »

I started adventure mode recently and ran into two seemingly big hurdles. Can you guys offer any advice?

1)I can't figure out how to get more water and food. Nothing I tried seems to work. Trying to get in the water or get any from lakes or rivers from the side doesn't do anything. I'm going to run out and I'm not sure what happens after that. I tried to interact with my animal corpses, maybe to skin them for pelts or to make food out of them but nothing happens. When I try to eat them, I lick them.

2) Trade: I can't. I have a few of these corpses that seem to be worth money but nobody will take them. I can't trade them for less expensive goods or even for small amounts of cash. My Cougar corpse is worth 350 but when I try to make any kind of deal, nothing happens. I was only able to get rid of a wolf body worth about 250 for 3, which the guy "owes" me. That wasnt' even intentional though.

If I can't make anything happen with the trading and the hunting, my guy might well starve or thirst to death.
Also, how do you clean yourself off? Not really an issue but I'm curious. I've got human, wolf, and cougar blood all over me.

In order to move off an edge: Alt+(movement key) WARNING!  If you do not have skill in swimming, you will drown.

In order to refill a waterskin: Stand next to a water source (you don't have to be in it or on top of it), and press Shift+I.  Select your waterskin in the opened menu, and then select the water source you want to collect from.

Corpses cannot be eaten, sold, skinned, cooked, or anything else for that matter.  The number that appears is the weight of the item, not the cost.  Adventurers have no idea how much anything costs, you just have to make educated guesses.

The only way of cleaning yourself is to jump into some water.  Again, not recommended unless you can swim.  You can train up swimming skill in a relatively safe environment if you're lucky enough to find a waterfall.  Stand at the very edge of the cliff the waterfall's pouring over, and then walk into the shallow water just where the water runs off.  Then attempt to walk upstream.

You can get emergency food supplies by pressing Shift+L and "l"ooking around for small creatures such as lizards, rats, large cockroaches etc.  These you can eat when you become very hungry.  Otherwise, the only place to get more food is from human cities.

Anything else?

EDIT:  Oh, and this should really be in the "Gameplay Questions" section.

Thanks for replying. Sorry, I thought it went here.

Do you have to unequip armor and such before attempting to train swimming?
One other question: Is there a way to retreat from combat?
Thanks again.

A note about swimming:

It is advised to practice it near a large body of water which has ramps on the edges. And whenever you enter water, make SURE you choose the selection for water, and not open space. Many times my adventurers have died because they jumped into the air above the water, fell down, got stunned and drowned.

A note about trading in adventure mode: If I remember right, the trade interface shows the item's weight, not its value. (That had me stumped for a while  :)

So what is the best way to get loot? These chores that the mayor sends me on don't give rewards and I don't find anything lying around. I robbed a store once and got a ton of money, but having lots of townspeople trying to kill me wasn't helpful. Should I go looking for dwarf towns to ask around for work there or what?

Also, how do I change my equipped weapon and armor?
I picked up a body part and it replaced my two handed sword as my melee weapon automatically and I had to drop it. MY W and A displays the things I don't want and in hands that don't make sense.

Raid a goblin fortress. Kill goblin civilians, take the giant cave spider silk clothing and use it to trade - it is worth a lot!

I actually detest the Adventure-mode swimming - the way it handles it, your almost guaranteed to drown; since you can't climb back out of a river, since they almost never have ramps. The only times I've seen swimming come in handy is on glaciers, strangely enough.

No need for ramps in rivers unless you are drowning or lack legs. In which case, it makes sense.

Just exit the same way you entered, Alt + direction.

About weapon changing - if you have a free hand, you'll take an item in it on pickup. If you have useless item in hand just use "p" (put in container) -> "cat leather backpack" the useless item from your hand and get the weapon from the ground. If you have a weapon in backpack, you should drop it and pick it up from the ground. Sadly there's no "take from container in hand" key.

"r"emove from container works fine, Deon. Just get an empty hand and remove an item you want wielded from your backpack - it will be in your hand.

Also, at the moment, you don't really *need* to eat or drink, because 'T'raveling cures all injuries and hunger/thirst.

Though an easy way to drink is to stand next to a river and 'e'at the water from it, or to drink off the water from a rain storm,  ;).

Not ALL inijuries, I had a red arm wound and after I travelled one square away then back to the goblin fort, it got healed to a yellow. Also, don't forget severed wounds, even though DF is unreal-ish, we don't have Piccolo style regeneration  :p
