Of Seals and Trumpets: Angel SG

It was a holy mountain you descended upon, one host to surely a dozen prophets and hundreds of burnt offerings. A place of reverence and reflection, a thousand thousand prayers, dreams, and sacrifices stretching back to when the first men huddled tight around a fire and hoped the dark would retreat, if even for a night.

You had to make a subtle entry. No pillar of light or storm of fire. The stars in the sky underwent a gentle realignment, a nod to the new Warden of Alesia.

That’s you.

You are an Angel, a servant of Good and the Most High God, Lord of 142, maybe 143 worlds depending on how the conquest of Serphos was going.

You were assigned to Alesia by the Council of Thrones, the authority just under that of the Lord himself. Your main directive was to foster as much Good as possible, and protect the world from demonic incursions.

Alesia was a Border world, meaning heaven and hell both possessed a claim. In a gentlemanly agreement both principalities agreed not to send hosts and legions and do outright battle over this world and it’s souls, ruining the world for both sides.

Instead, they send an Angel like you to represent the interests of Heaven. Work in the background and make the world a better place. Make sure that a Hell doesn’t take it over.

Track down the former warden who went rogue.

Anyways, no pillar of fire, but you arrived in  a gust of wind, carrying the scent of a incense that you found on a crusade on a far away world and fell in love with. A beam of sunlight may have also slipped past a cloud and illuminated the holy site you arrived at.

All suitably subtle still, you assure yourself.

Three holy men. . . Wait actually two holy men and one woman kneel before you. Their bodies practically radiate with Good, years spent in mediation and prayer leaving their very bones saturated with the energy.

“Oh High One, we call on you in our time of need. Darkness and woe overtake the earth, evil besieges us and rules over the hearts of our kings. We ask for your wisdom and mercy over our people. High One, we call on you in our time of need. . .”

They repeat this mantra, cracked lips and parched throats endlessly repeating. They can’t see your true form yet, as the sight of all the wings and your radiant form may very shock and kill them.

In front of the three saints lies the object of their entireties. It is a

A. A Sword. Wielded by a knight who defended the poor and the innocent, struck down defending the defenseless. You are a Destroyer, formed for holy war and defeat of evil.

B. A Staff. Carried by a prophet, who brought wisdom and life to all those he blessed. You are a Loremaster, master of the secret names of God.

C. A Harp. Played by a woman who never shrunk from the Truth in her songs, whose light breathed life into all who heard her. You are a Singer, a maker and shaper of stories.

And also, what is your name?

Traveler of Tales- Singer and Warden of Alesia

Current Good: 10

Good acts as a combo of Health and Power level. You naturally accrue Good over time, and can be gained from doing Good Works and by sacrifices.
Good can be used, in which case it returns after a chance to rest, or invested permanently.

3 Prophets currently in service.

You are the Traveler of Tales, whose gentle touch has been the instrument by which events that may one day enter legend are begun.

You are the Traveler of Tales, a Singer of the hosts of Heaven. Six wings stretch from your back, a body of blinding light and impossible angles. A face of indescribable beauty (you asked) and hair of golden flame.

You were chosen for your deft hand at weaving together stories and events, a talent for picking the path of living things like they were actors in a play.

And so you were called to the Council of Thrones, and the Throne of Dominion gave you the Mandate of Heaven, your writ of power and responsibility over the world of Alesia.

Spoiler: The Mandate of Heaven (click to show/hide)

And the Throne of Laws handed you the belt of Seals, your limitations until the Time is right for them to broken and wrath poured out.

The harp lying in front of the three saints burned with a golden light. They froze, ceasing their prayers. Their eyes flicker from the burning harp to where you hung, invisible to the mortal eye.

You can see the shape of their stories now. Three doddering elders, minds alded by the sun. Three sages, each carrying a prophecy back to their homes. 3 prophets, bring Truth and an exposing flame back. Each a possibility given the right nudge.

Each a string that could be plucked.

However, you still have much to learn of this place, and these saints could tell you much of the local situation. You can tell that they have came by different routes from different places, the lilt and intonation of their prayers distinguishing them.

They have, through a conflux of fate and faith, called you forth and told you a tale, asking for aid with:

A. The Fall of the Northern Kingdoms . The great kingdoms of the north, beacons of knowledge and power, are beset on all sides by darkness and evil. Their fall seems almost certain, but what will survive the collapse?

B. The Dissolution of Empire .
Vultures pick apart the dying empire one bloody scrap at a time, as one venial emperor after another scramble to enrich themselves looting its corpse.  Can it remake itself, or will it have to be cleansed by fire?

C. Rise of the Priest Kings.
Cults of ancient gods have reawoken, and are demanding human sacrifices to sake their thirst. Fear and terror dominate the land underneath the knife, but who might rise to overthrow the old order?

You gaze out from the summit of the mountain.  Blue sky dotted with white, blazing sun overhead shining onto rolling hills of orchards and grass descend into rich valleys of rolling grain and barley. You can see several villages, built over generations. You can almost see the story of this place, the mountain sheltering those who came to it in their time of need. In turn, the people venerated the mountain. A cycle of peace and plenty stretching back gently.

You look at the three gathered before you, worn by their travels and the rigors of summoning an Angel before them. You allow a glimpse of your form to appear before them. They throw their faces on the ground before you, crying out in wonder. You gently raise them up.

Voice a gentle breeze, you ask them,

“Why have you called me?”

The woman, robes a dusty gray, face sun-cracked and worn, began.

“A darkness has fallen over the people. Old gods have come back, and ambitious kings and priests have sent thousands of men, women, and children to their alters to bleed and burn.”

The man on the right, gray hair windswept and long, continued.

“The empire was thrown out a dozen years ago. We thought that would lead to peace and plenty, but the great kings turned on each other and ravaged the land with war and sorcery.”

The last, stick thin and scalp bare, bowed his head.

“Oh Holy one, we searched through our scriptures and temples, looking for any way we could ask and beg for deliverance. Our people are dying, they have forgotten what it means to be good to one another. The lord of Aritiapo turns his gaze to here, and has no respect for the old ways. The people of the mountain cannot stand alone. We need your aid.”

You consider their words, and gently draw more from their minds. The Cenarian Empire came through these lands , the lands of the Nerhream, two hundred years ago, conquering and burning. A dozen years ago, the great Cities banded together and threw out the weakened empire with the aid of old gods and ancient sorceries. But such power does not go back into the bottle easily, and now the cities of Partia, Tyros, and Uran wage war across the fields and villages of Nerhream.

The mountain, Holy Ulast, sheltered several villages beneath its slopes. The lord of the nearby fortress Aritiapo,  a client of the City of Tyros, has been receiving increasing demands to collect sacrificial victims for the altars and gladiatorial games. He has been sending men into the villages to gather villagers to meet his quota.

Your wings shudder in anger, and the grip on your harp tightens. The land indeed is in need of a Warden to call it to order.

You survey the 3 saints, calling you forth in light of their lifetime of service. They could make for capable agents, but they have also willingly offered their very lives to you. Though you would have no need to take them in this case, you could take the accumulated Good they have accrued through their lives. This wouldn’t really harm them, but would hamper their abilities as your agents. In exchange you would gain a rather significant amount of Good energy for your current state.

Current “Good Energy”: 10

What do you do?

A- Harvest their Good to empower yourself further. Each has roughly 10 points of Good.

B- Leave them alone for now, you may get a better idea of how to use them later.

C- Bless them using their own reserves of Good. Blessings can modify their bodies and their souls, granting mystical powers or enhanced physical capabilities.

And of course, now you have to plan your next steps. The world awaits you, a raging beast pulling itself towards the edge of oblivion. It will take skill, cunning, and properly applied power. Already you can see the courses laid out before you, bodies in motion.

Threads pulled taut, waiting for Fate to pull and weave.

What Story calls to you?

A- Among the Ashes, a Hero is Found.

B- The Prodigal Child Returns.

C- The Hunt for a Strange Beast.
